Priest is a movie that does not need to go as hard as it did. Hailing from the same genre of "adapting supehero comics seems lucrative right now lets see if it works with more obscure comics too" Priest joins the ranks of RED, Atomic Blonde, Edge of Tomorrow, and Cowboys Vs Aliens (???) in the list of movies I didn't know were based on graphic novels. Petitioning now to direct the screen adaptation of Adam Rapp's Ball Peen Hammer.
Obviously due to the year I was born the Genndy Tartakovsky animated narrative intro was my favorite part of the whole film but really the movie surprised me. Yeah some parts of it were bland or underutilized but the cast, design, and atmosphere drew me in anyway.
How did this movie fly under the radar? It's a Post-Apoc Vampire Western with a touch of Blade Runner Catholicism. This is like a slightly campier Book of Eli if the Book of Eli asked "what if vampires were like wasps?" Even the CG Gray monster trope makes sense considering the lore of the film.
Priest is a film underrated inasmuch as it didn't need to go so hard but it did, and I have to give it credit for this.
