this was my actual setup for my old pc for a good while

later on I made this abomination and my old pc still sits in that box but its no longer in use and also my room isnt cluttered to hell anymore

From the pc via rca into my vcr which gets fed through a cheap scart to hdmi converter through an hdmi splitter into my avermedia live gamer capture card...

Passthrough capture works :] and i can record my pc onto vhs and then capture the vhs

Im waiting for an even cheaper converter to arrive so that i can record glitched vhs footage too without it cutting out

Back in 2017/2018 i bought a broken mega drive that wouldnt boot any game

That mega drive for some reason booted sonic spinball

When we used a hair dryer to heat the board up around the cpu it suddenly started booting but it was fucking weird because every game that made use of multiple palettes or other graphical tricks like split screen or video playback was a hot mess when those things happened

I thought the cpu might be bad so i bought a new one and resoldered it (VERY BADLY OH MY GOD ITS SO BAD ONE OF THE LEGS LOST ITS SOLDERING AFTER CLEANING IT THOROUGHLY. SOMEHOW BY SHEER LUCK OR WHATEVER THAT DIDNT MATTER BECAUSE ITS STILL MAKING A CONNECTION. DO NOT SOLDER WITHOUT FLUX I DIDNT HAVE ANY AT THE TIME AND IT LOOKS SO BAD EVEN THO IM NOT BAD AT SOLDERING IT WAS HELL)

Well anyway it helped a little and the console started booting up games consistently after that but it still had the glitches

So since then its been pretty obvious that this is an issue with the VDP. At the time i wasnt sure what kind of issue tho.

About 2 or 3 years ago i decided to scrub the entire board with isopropyl alcohol since it was dirty and when i tested the thing afterward i was dumbfounded

All the glitches? GONE. NOTHING WEIRD ANYMORE.

This stayed like that until early this year when after trying out flashcarts the fucking console just crashed suddenly

Now the console isnt dead but it has the issue of not booting games half the time again. It still consistently boots sonic spinball tho.

We tried one of the titan demos recently and when it does boot it plays those back almost flawlessly although it refuses to playback a few of the graphical tricks

Anyway this is one of the fucking wildest consoles ive dealt with and i will fix the shitty soldering soon when i get my hands on a good soldering station finally lol i just wanted to talk about this weirdo console

Also from the way it looks the vdp needs to be reflowed and that might be all that has to be done to get it fixed properly

Its likely bad from factory since it just seems to be dealing with cracks in the solder around the vdp given how similar the symptoms are to how bumpgate consoles act (heat/scrubbing/pressure/soaking fixing things for a while)

If that doesnt fix it then... its officially an organ donor console because you cannot buy replacement VDPs and the vdp would then have an internal failure such as the wires inside the silicon breaking

Also i need to know what makes sonic spinball so special that even a console with a fucked VDP can boot the game its so weird

Been looking into xbox 360 and ps3 issues and started wondering if the wii also technically suffered from bumpgate as it has ati chips like the 360 and turns out: yeah the launch models of the wii DO suffer from this issue but it isnt as well known because wiis dont run that hot

Well, they dont run that hot unless you have wiiconnect24 on. Because then the consoles gpu is constantly doing stuff even in standby mode when the fans are not running

They also just dont have something like a syscon that is checking if the console is working correctly before booting so it will boot with a failing gpu which means you dont have some kind of iconic failing signal like on the other 2 guys

If your gamecube compatible wii has an 01 written on the board behind the battery cover: youve got a bumpgate wii 😀

Its even worse when giving consoles a new case...

Your gameboy has a shitty yellowed case? Buy a new case for cheap and put the old hardware in there its really easy like maybe 10 steps at most to make sure you put it all in the right way there is almost nothing to fuck up.

Your DS lites case is cracked and shitty? You can still find cases for cheap but GOD the hell you are about to put yourself through to get that shitty top screen out of the old case... and pray to god you dont break the fucking ribbon cable for the top screen.

This reshell AND lcd mod took like an hour to do. No panic about any components or anything it was a very chill thing to do

This was hell. 4 hours of pure torture. It was intended to merge 2 broken DS lites to 1 functioning one but it ended up needing an extra DS lite as sacrifice due to the shitty ribbon cables that are precariously placed inside the hinge. I mean you can SEE the abomination that is the internal circuitry here. Also we spent an ungodly time trying to find one of the miniscule components that decided to get flung around the room during this. Reshelling a DS lite should be a torture method.

since i've been tinkering with my 3ds more lately i noticed that the battery is not nearly as good as it used to be. but i thought "well at least the battery isn't too difficult to replace. just have to get a new one and take the back plate off and swap them." and i thought, gee, most stuff today sure doesn't make battery replacement easy. out of curiosity i check the difference on ifixit.
