He doesn’t realize that the legacy he seeks was made by a broken man, more corpse than alive.
The boy listens to the scattered half-truths of his grandfather’s story. In his mother he hears the warning of a terrifying figure that threatened peace and rained despair upon everything he touched. In his father he sees the droop of proud shoulders and a strained grimace of remembered failure; traces of fear in the twist of his visage. Han says a half-truth, and it says less than the stiffness of his spine: He was a bad man.
In his uncle there is the most dissonance: the clenching of a mechanical hand, the same stiffening of shoulders and back as if the reminder is physically painful--and then, in the same instance, there’s a softening, as if something had melted that very pain. His expression pulls into something of a smile, still hinting at old hurts, but calmed, tempered, unlike the harsh jagged edges of his parent’s memories. Luke tells him a story, the truth as he knows it, pulled together from the bits and pieces he’d collected over the years. Luke knows the ending better than he knows anything else, and it’s that which is important to him. He was a good man, Anakin Skywalker.
So Ben asks a question, But who was Darth Vader?
And Luke only shakes his head, because Darth Vader was a mistake, and not the man beneath the mask. Darth Vader was the dark, twisted soul Sidious had created from the remains of Anakin Skywalker’s self-loathing, despair and lust for power. Luke knows nothing of that story; only the bits and pieces of hearsay, but he’s made his own conclusion. Ben has to make his.
How could anyone merge the two pictures of his grandfather’s face? One a hero, a Jedi for the light, the other a menacing figure of darkness who struck fear into the hearts of an entire galaxy and crushed them in his durasteel fists.
How could Ben know that same mask and body hid the decaying, fraying, crippled body of a man who’s rage came from his weakness and self-loathing. He couldn’t know Darth Vader was a man pushing forward through will power alone, that his wheezing, mechanical breaths were feared because even though he had one foot in the grave, he would leave his mark be it by tearing the galaxy down with him.
In Snoke he heard the story of Darth Vader, one of the most powerful Sith Lords who had eradicated the Jedi to near extinction if it wasn’t for Luke Skywalker. And wouldn’t Ben want all that power? Wouldn’t he want to follow in those same footsteps? That sad excuse for a Jedi Order can’t do what Vader did within mere moments to an entire galaxy.
If he couldn’t be a good Jedi, than he would make certain that the fear in his father’s face was warranted, that the worry in his mother’s eyes was justified, that the disappointed sigh from his uncle’s lips would be an exhalation of apprehension instead. If there is too much of his grandfather in him, than he would be his grandfather. He would become just as powerful, if not more.
He doesn’t realize that the shadow cast by Darth Vader’s legacy is made by half a man, more machine, one so hating himself that he decided to hate the rest of the universe instead. He doesn’t realize that the legacy of Kylo Ren could be so much more, and mean so much more. He is whole and unmarred and the anger that burns in his veins is pure and untainted. He doesn’t realize calling out to the charred ghost won’t give him the strength he seeks, for he is stronger than he who came before.

He thought: this is what I wanted, isn’t it?
And even if the answer that resonated somewhere in his soul was a negative, the deed was already done. He stared into the face of the man who had called him son, who he had called father; a person he had once hoped to emulate and become. A sliver of regret disturbed his mind and revulsion burned in his veins. He watched the light die in the man’s eyes, felt the rough, calloused skin of his palm against his unmarred face and hated himself. The war grew in him, the boy he once had been crying out in horror and begging to wake from a nightmare there was no escape from.
Echoing, like someone else’s voice, he thought: It’s too late for me.
The lightsaber’s bright red blade extinguished as he released the switch. Their locked eyes drifted. The hand fell away. The body dropped beneath them into the seemingly endless abyss. Ben felt himself fall as well. The plunge was cold, ice water in his veins and he was frozen. Something in him snapped and broke away, to be lost the same way Han Solo’s body would be lost. There was a second of utter stillness and silence. The clawing of his soul, that pulling feeling was gone. All that was left was the darkest pit. In the midst of the self-hatred, and the anger, and the disgust, there was one sensation that he could revel in: relief.
The darkness had claimed him as it’s true son. For one second, the call to the light was extinguished; drowned out. Ben Solo was truly dead, fallen into the pit with his father.
The sound of a wookie’s roar disturbed the moment, pain exploded in his side. Rage filled up the hole, filled up the absence of his former self and he thought: My name is Kylo Ren, Master of the Knights of Ren and I am a Sith like my grandfather before me.

“Hux grew up hearing legends of great Imperials, and how the Empire saved the galaxy from the violence of the Clone Wars. The young Hux firmly believed the galaxy needed to be saved from itself, as the New Republic was too weak to prevent the inevitable chaos.”

So I know Kylo is conflicted and resisting this call to the light side of the Force, but I kind of want to rp him as being incredibly ruthless and dark and brutal because of that conflicted feeling--because no matter if he’s on the light side or on the dark side, there’s always going to be a calling to one side or the other. So it’s better if the entire galaxy is torn apart because maybe one side will finally claim him as it’s own--and he that said is the dark side because you don’t find peace from all the horrible things you’ve done if you decide to turn back.

“I’ve seen inside your mind; your fears, your hopes, your dreams. You can’t hide from me. I know you.”
His was an ominous figure against the backdrop of cold, gray durasteel, hands a pair of ready claws. He stood as if waiting for an attempt to be rushed, waiting to brace against resistance. Kylo was immovable, solid, prepared to stamp out the futile effort she presented.

He came to a halt as the Jedi Master revealed himself, his presence now bright in Kylo’s senses, tinged by darkness he himself had manifested. Beneath the mask, he smiled. His head canted slightly to the side at the spoken name, and he almost thought to laugh. Of anyone in the galaxy it should have been his former master who gave up false hope, but here he was calling a name Kylo had long since relinquished.
Like Han before him, Luke was naive enough to think that some part of him could be saved. It was too late. He would make sure of it. This last specter from his past needed to fall, so that all call to the light could be extinguished for good.
“Luke Skywalker,” Kylo said, “Finally, you’ve decided to show yourself. Tired of hiding?”

For nearly twodecades, Luke had remained  a w a y, grieving over his loss and trying to find peace again. In truth, he still didn’t have it, and he probably never would. He had hated Ben at the time, but not as much as he hated himself for letting him become Kylo. That much hatred in his heart, and Luke could not call himself a Jedi. In such a state, he was the galaxy’s greatest threat.
He was his daughter’s greatest threat.
So he had hid himself away from the galaxy, working on finding his  b a l a n c e  between the light and the dark once more. He wasn’t sure if he could save his nephew, but he had to  t r y. He loved Ben like he was his own son. Luke could not give up on him.
 “Ben.”

There, at the edge of his conscious, came a familiar spark, as if it had been drawn to his energies. Years had passed, and yet the presence was as familiar as it was foreign. Here was another from his misspent youth who had falsely warned him against the path he now traveled. What good had the light done for the former Jedi apprentices whom had fallen at his blade? What good had hope done for his father? Here was yet another test of his loyalty to the dark side, and he intended to prove his worth: both to Snoke and even more importantly, to his grandfather.
Kylo wondered if he would have been proud to see this moment, or saddened that it was his grandson and not his own child whom realized his legacy. Such fancy didn’t matter. Luke Skywalker had emerged from the pit he had crawled in to face his wayward apprentice. It was a mistake he wouldn’t have to live with for long. Kylo’s booted feet carried him across the durasteel corridors, ever aware of the presence he was ready to snuff out.
