You get it!! I had something similar happen to me- I could sort of the get the sense something was Not Exactly Right but I was all in. It really only sank in when I did more research on the Hate endings to get a better idea of them, but I've been seized by the idea ever since.

I'm curious to hear your take! How do you think it would go?

Them pretending to just go with his flirting all the while thinking it's all fake and hurting on the inside. All of that coming to the forefront after the faulty wire has been fixed and both of them confess.

The angst. The hurt/comfort. Does anyone see it?

WAIT. WAIT OH MY GOD. You're right. You're SO RIGHT. I never even thought about that. This is devastating! This is an absolutely heartbreaking nightmarish Catch 22 situation for both of them

No matter how you look it, this was absolutely awful. And I cannot even begin to imagine what it was like for Eddie as well. The way Volt is, regardless of whether he knew from the start or found it out later, he'd accept it with no complaints- And that's because his raison d'etre is to protect Eddie, to make he's safe and sound. He would give up anything and everything for him, including his own life.

But for Eddie... Regardless of whether he brought him into existence with the idea of Volt being 'a temporary fix' and eventually starting to care for him or not knowing the idea behind it at all and eventually finding out; I cannot imagine the amount of guilt he must have felt. How awful must have to felt, sooner or later to care for Volt immensely but knowing that the original intent for his very existence was 'only for the time being' as a 'fix'. How terrible he must have felt about it all.

You've spoken of everything else so perfectly... My God, what a painfully sweet thought. That they're both so dedicated to each other, so devoted that they put themselves in such a painful position.

You know what makes me insane about Eddie and Volt? When Volt says “it was supposed to be temporary.”

Like,, how does he know that? Did he spark into existence knowing he’s only ever meant to be a temporary fix to a problem?

When did Eddie realise that he was more than that? As soon as he materialised, flaring into life in front of him, all the brightness and energy he hadn’t realised he’d been missing? Did he love him from the start, or did he have to learn along the way?

When did Eddie realise that the faulty wire was causing his problems, and that fixing it might mean losing Volt? The person he created to be a fix becomes the reason he can’t repair himself, and he realises that Volt has become someone he cannot lose, not even to save himself.

When did Volt find out? How must it feel, for the single purpose of your existence to be to protect someone, but the only way to repair what is harming him means he might lose you in the process, and you’d do it, of course you’d do it, you’d do anything for him, but he won’t let you

Because somewhere along the line it stopped being temporary.

So I saw the tags, and I am glad to know I am not the only one who's been wondering about this! And you're right, Volt does say that in the Hate ending. I remember watching a playthrough of it to get a better understanding of both of them. (And then being absolutely horrified, disgusted and heartbroken)

This question has plagued me so much I have actually watched walkthroughs of Eddie and Volt's Love ending several times. Considering the fact that you, and from the looks of a few other people on Tumblr also seemed to be interested in figuring this out, I thought I'd share my thoughts! I have tried to pinpoint what might have been the moment things shifted? Or at least when he was being genuine. But I am not sure at all.

So, first meeting! This seems obvious, I'm quite certain he was playing the role of this charming, seductive host. Though what does stand out to me is his mention of the protagonist having a 'reputation'. I am very sad we don't get to ask what kind of reputation, but the way he follows it up is. Interesting. I'm sure that's a bit of an act but it is interesting to me. It indicates an awareness of the player's antics in the house and maybe him being kind of intrigued by them. Which makes sense, because considering the fact that a lot of the objects in the house come to the Breaker Box and they would have talked about them. But I'm not sure in what sense this intrigue could be: Is he interested in the player themself or trying to see what changes they could bring to the Breaker Box and how they could affect Eddie? Could be either, honestly. It's hard to say.

Another thing: I think he's being genuine when he remarks (and it seems appreciative in tone) that the player being is thoughtful when they ask about Eddie being okay. And then choosing to not push it. It contributes to the Love ending for a reason-- I think that actually makes an impact on him; that this is someone who may show the same kind of care, consideration and respect for Eddie the way he does.

Also, and I might be fixated on this a little: The nickname. He just came up with that on the spot? And specifically live wire? As in the specific wire in the component of a circuit that carries the current from the source to the device? Maybe I'm too fixated on it but it feels a bit meaningful to me, especially since it's coming from the personification of electricity himself. To me, it's almost like he's saying that player is the one guiding the life of this house and it's his way to not only be flirtatious but also indicate some subtle respect for them.

Anyway!

Second meeting sees a lot more of the same facade, I think. If the player chooses to call him hiding something, he does crack for a second. But then goes right back to it. But, if in part of asking questions, you choose to enquire about Eddie and be pretty respectful about him, I think also contributes to the potential fondness he has for the player. If the player doesn't, I think he's still more or less comfortable with them? Not asking keeps the facade going and either he's glad it's working or he's grateful for not too many questions being asked despite things being obviously off. I say that because it seems to me that he potentially noticed the player overhearing the little argument he had with Eddie? And the player chooses not to push considering that, it could be seen as a way of respecting their privacy and how they do things. Which would have an affect, I'm sure. The second meeting is what has me very confused, to be honest. It's hard to examine things there, there isn't a lot to read into.

The third meeting, in my understanding, is the most genuine Volt is before the blackout and the end of the route. I say this for a few reasons. One: It's where the player chooses to tell him that they have an interest in him and they keep coming back for him. If they're direct about it, he affirms that he feels the same. While one could say this could be a lie, what confirms it as honest for me is that if they choose to be coy and not outright say it, he prompts it out of them. He pursues the matter, repeatedly. He wants to hear them say it before he affirms it. Doing that isn't necessary to maintain this facade or protect Eddie from the player's interference. So this feels separate from that. It feels like he wanted that for himself. Besides, while Volt may have this facade, I don't quite see him as being cruel enough to outright lie to someone like that. Flirting is one thing, lying to someone about having romantic feelings for them is another.

Two: Choosing to dance with the player. Again, not necessary. He did not need to do all that. And he's fine with leading and following; he's not rigid about it; not pretending to be something. I think he does this because he genuinely wants to. He makes the offer, he takes that intiative. Which, as I've said was not strictly necessary if he was just trying to keep up the facade.

These explanations hold for point number three as well, which is the kiss. Not necessary. Could have done without it. He intiates it. I think it's indicative of his own desire. I think the love ending or the hate ending ultimately decides whether these feelings are fully cemented or eventually crushed.

I have been seeing this popular headcanon floating around that Volt actually found out about the player helping Eddie after hours, based on the fact that he has no reaction to Eddie asking the player if they remember where the tools are in the Love ending part of the blackout. While this does make sense to me, I'm not a hundred percent sure about this because unless I'm mistaken- If you choose not to kiss Volt and tell him you need to tell him something, then tell him you've been helping Eddie, it gets you on the route to the Hate end. HOWEVER. I am not a hundred percent sure about this. If anyone has chosen this option in that conversation and would like to share their experience, please let me know. This headcanon could easily be an in-story explanation for what brought about the change, but I am uncertain about this. I'm on unclear on where his facade ceases to be a facade is just him genuinely loving the player.

Regardless, after a lot of watching, analysing and thinking I think Volt's feelings are genuine, but by God it is something of an Olympic sport to figure when and how. To figure out where the facade ends and where the love begins.

And I'm going to yell about Volt too. Ohohoho, don't think that man is spared from being turned in my head like a rotisserie chicken.

It's worth questioning how much of the flirting was a mask, a shield for Eddie and how much of it was genuine.

I say this because he implies he knew about the player's reputation. Reputation for what, sir? And why are you so interested?

And coming with a term of endearment ON THE SPOT?!

Not to mention, from what I know, he doesn't exactly know about how the player has been helping Eddie after hours, so to dance with them on the last day of their route and KISSING them?!

I mean. It gets to a point.

I wonder if Volt questioned it, too. I wonder if the lines between the mask and what his heart truly felt blurred for him. And how did that make him feel?

Did he feel guilty? Feeling so attached to someone that he was supposed to keep Eddie away from? Was he confused at some point? Did he go over his words, searching for the moment it became all too real?

Hi there! I noticed quite a few people talking about this, and honestly... I've been there. Sometimes, it's hard to imagine them actually being attracted to that extent. Especially when you look in the mirror and just see... Nothing too impressive.

And I know this sounds kind of cheesy but genuinely? I think sometimes we underestimate how beautiful we may be to other people. I mean, I'm sure it's happened to you guys as well, that sometimes you see someone who you find absolutely gorgeous but they just don't see it. I think that may be the case for all of us. We're so used to ourselves, or we've been told by others we're not that special, that we just don't see it. But trust me, not everyone sees you the same way.

Besides which, Volt and Eddie's route— and the routes of most everyone in DE— is getting to know them better and being there for them, loving and supporting them. When it comes to Volt and Eddie, it's being considerate and caring towards both of them, and doing all you can to support both of them. That's what has them falling for the player, and in a way, for you. That connection and love is the bedrock of the relationship and the attraction. Physical appearance is genuinely not the most important thing. I won't lie and say it doesn't matter, but there's more important things.

I've heard it said before by my loved ones and I think it's true, "Beauty (in the convential sense) might be what draws the first glance, but it's personality which makes people stay."

And as I've said before, being hot or beautiful in general is a subjective thing. Have faith in yourselves. ❤

DATE EVERYTHING SPOILERS FOR VOLT AND EDDIE'S ROUTE

I have now gotten into Date Everything and the Breaker Box boys are rattling around in my head. They're SO. GOD. I LOVE THEM.

Their route is absolutely fantastic, and after finishing it and watching someone else get the Hate ending and I am WHIRRING with thoughts.

At the beginning of the route, when Volt meets the player. How much of it is genuine interest? How much of it is the mask? How much of it is just this plan to keep the fantasy going, to keep them away, to keep Eddie safe?

AND GOD EDDIE. What was he feeling when he saw the MC actively flirt with Volt when the club was running but show genuine affection and care for him in all the times they worked on repairs? Did he feel guilty? Some weird mix of happiness that someone was truly seeing him beyond the smoke and mirrors?
