pan-pan and mayday are such an effective combination of episodes in how they highlight eiffel's importance to the crew. to paraphrase gabriel urbina about pan-pan: eiffel is the communications officer, and without him there, everyone stops communicating. eiffel's "death" - the way they blame themselves and each other - goes unspoken and fuels resentment until something breaks. it's a tangible absence. and there's definitely something to be said about how eiffel fails to recognize himself as an equal part of the crew - even alone, he puts his best ideas in the mouths of other people. he blames himself for his failures, but won't take credit for his success. but, at the same time, it's such a great contrast to have this discordant group of people who won't talk to each other or work together set up against eiffel quite literally doing teamwork with himself. whatever else you can say about him, he brings out the best in the people around him - and he takes the best parts of them with him when he goes.

I love u appalachian trail and dirtbikes and divebars. I love u sparklers and fireflies. I love u mark twain and toni morrison and emily dickinson and henry david thoreau. Forgot to put up my parking pass and had to leave the class before the professor. Got back to discover they were in another classroom. I then got lost and ended up 20+ minutes late to a class I was originally 10 minutes early too 🙃🙃🙃
