the ground comes beneath his feet once more , though otto lingers for precious seconds afterwards. as though hesitant to release his troublesome roommate from his grasp — norman likes that , & is thankful his back is turned to his friend , so he may not see the smirk tugging at his lips. once free , a hand produces a pack of cigarettes from the inner lining of his jacket , placing one between his lips. ❝ i didn’t like the way he was talking to you . ❞ it comes plainly , norman seemingly more interested in the fumblings of his lighter than the conversation.
finally getting the damn thing lit , he reaches blindly behind for octavius’ hand — blame it on the alcohol later , & the brisk air making his fingers ache , he pulls his friend along as he begins walking. there was a diner not too far off / open late , somewhere the two frequent during long nights studying ( or partying , for norman’s part. ) ❝ you shouldn’t let people talk to you that way , otto . you’re worth more than that . ❞
he doesn’t pull from shorter man’s grasp, following obediently behind with palms pressed together, connecting one science major to another. otto thinks about childhood, about other kids and broken glasses and bloody noses, blackeyes and other bruises. words. his father had hated that he let other kids do that, had told him he needed to stand up for himself, and maybe that is why he so firmly doesn’t. “ i didn’t ask if you liked it. ” he offers quietly, not quite argumentative, words murmured under breath, the way he might say it to his father, hushed so he can deny it if pressed.
he swallows. sighs softly through his nose, looking anywhere but at norman. “ they’re just words, norman. ” otto counters with a hefty shrug, like water off his back, even when those words, names and taunts bother him, he is not one to show it. a firm believer bullies are looking for reaction, he has no intention on giving them that. “ it really doesn’t bother me. ” he insists, lie comes naturally, eyes trained ahead of them once again, discomfort written in posture, even with refusal of admittance. “ people say things, you just can’t let it get to you. ”

she is smoking a cigarette on his fire escape, private indulgence she can no longer risk at home - terrified as she is of rubbing off on harry, who remains mercifully innocent to his mother’s uglier habits for the moment. perhaps she looks miserable; there’s certainly a pensive air about her, depth of thought bleeding into the brisk chill of east coast october, and she had believed she was alone. the mask comes down around him and rosie inasmuch as it can, but she never means to make them worry.
what norman would say, if he knew she were here … if he knew this were where she had chosen to go to escape his warped business politics. ( he often wonders whose side she is on, and she often wishes the answer were different. )
“ so, ” she begins, anger reflected in acidic brightness; she ashes over the railing, remembers the look in her husband’s eyes this afternoon. it tangs uncomfortably in her throat. “ i hear you’re leaving us. ”

otto moves to sit, looking out, away. frustration has settled into dull ache somewhere beneath his ribs, disgusted at should-be friend’s behavior, the idea he would take a deal without discussion, without so much as a call. he understands the business side of it, the idea time is money, that every second used was money burning and that is where norman’s loyalty lies: in what can be gained. but it doesn’t make the situation better, the idea he is for the moment, without work, and what that might mean for he and rosie both.
otto does not mask how tired he looks, the energy it takes to keep optimism is reserved for rosie, and if emily tells norman . . . well, all he can hope is that he might actually feel bad. the idea that he’ll be back on his feet in no time, he has published papers, brilliant works but some would believe them far fetched, that he was little more than optimistic dreamer. he’ll prove them wrong, one day. “ what did he tell you ? ” he asks in acknowledgement, finally turning his head to let gaze fall upon her. leaving isn’t the word otto would use, but he doesn’t correct. doesn’t feel the need, there is so little difference anyway.

it comes as a surprise , the way otto speaks his name. it triggers a sudden halt in movement , the struggle to find his feet on the sidewalk once more seemingly dissipated , instead replaced by a keen awareness. HE’S NEVER HEARD OTTO RAISE HIS VOICE — at least , not like that. not something so CONFIDENT , commanding of attention. perhaps there is still more to the science major than what meets the eye. so norman allows his protest to die down , replaced only by the sound of his labored breathing / an attempt to catch his breath & calm down.
❝ … yeah , we can . ❞ he says finally , relaxing in his friend’s hold. it’s only now the blooming pain in his hand is taken notice , fingers flexing & letting out a soft hiss of pain. ❝ you can put me down now— i mean , unless you WANT to keep holding me . ❞ it’s followed by a satisfied snicker , norman’s confident demeanor seemingly returned.
slowly, otto lowers the other, arms still firmly around his waist for a moment longer as if waiting for norman to act up again, for him to have to grab and keep still once more, hesitance prolonging contact, before he retreats. hunches back into himself, always awkward and unsure when not doing something. as if built for science alone and anything else felt . . . wrong. he shifts his shoulders with a stiff nod. “ c’mon . . . let’s go. . .”
silence is prolonged, a mix of guilt and discomfort at the idea norman would do that for him, something that could him in quite a bit of trouble, something that could get him hurt, for otto. there is another feeling under that, akin to butterflies in his stomach, something warm and unsure. he doesn’t know how to describe it, so he doesn’t, stays quiet hands shoved deep into pockets. finally it seems the science major finds words, something he can say that will be understood, that will get a point across. “ you shouldn’t have done that. ” he offers almost offhandedly, but there is something in it, that word: shouldn’t. he means it.

keep reading .
when he was younger, he would have been a mess, red faced and desperate to please, but oh how time has changed him. ( even if there is a tint of pink beneath his skin. ) he suppresses the shudder that comes with touch upon metallic surface, the durga alerts senses, nerves lighting up. he will not admit the amount of effort it takes to keep distance, how easily he could follow demand and take. but octavius is well versed in temperance, and he has plans. blame scientific mind for desire to test limits, blame a bit of sadism for what he will consider payback for the goblin’s earlier mistreatment of his work. eyes open to look up at the goblin from where his head is buried between it’s thighs “ i do ? ” half admittance, half question head lowers, hot breath against the other, the drag of tongue as it dips to taste before otto turns his head and sinks his teeth into the soft flesh of inner thigh.
he kisses it sweetly after, peppers open mouthed kisses to soothe the mark. “ norman waited the entirety of our freshman year in college, i think you’ll last a few minutes. ” taunting. a challenge perhaps. “ can’t you ? ” he questions in mock innocence, head canting to press against the leg over his shoulder.

between the three of them, otto so rarely becomes assertive, he is suggestable at best, but there is something in his eyes, in the way chest rises and falls as he trails the barest kisses over throat, nose brushes collarbone, teeth scrape valley of his chest, down, slowly and effortlessly. the mattress shifts beneath his weight, knee slipping between their’s urging them further apart before serpentine arms slither to take hold of them. articulator shifts replacing his hand pressing flat over it’s chest, cold metal pressing into skin just enough to keep it in place as otto lowers himself further, heat rising beneath his cheeks as he brushes his lips against inner thigh. eyes locked on the goblin’s, pressing more firmly with metal arm making sure it’s weight it heavy, that the goblin is trapped beneath him before ducking his head to press open mouthed kisses somewhere far more sensitive. teasing, just enough to goad reaction, to pull whine from lips, testing limits as tongue trails upward before he retreats completely, a dangerous game but then . . . that has never stopped him before.

[ STRADDLE ] (reverse!) ― rosie sits down in otto’s lap.
he’s working, a constant state for octavius, glasses poised on his nose pencil in hand as he writes out notes, eyes flicking over textbooks he has no doubt read a thousand times each, piecing together information. the look of concentration on his face might be considered cute, he’d heard it enough from norman and rosie both, though it seems finishing his work isn’t in the cards tonight. a hand on his shoulder, pushing until his back is against the sheets, papers and books brushed to the side on the comforter as she slips onto his lap with relative ease. she sits comfortably on top of him, one thigh on either side of him, so warm and so close.

he had tried to defuse the situation, to laugh it off before norman saw the way words made him shrink in on himself. it was stupid. just words, and otto wasn’t one to use his physical strength. an all consuming fear he may become his father if he did, but it was different when it was a friend, when that strength was used to protect instead of harm, to prevent further bloodshed in his defense. arms tighten around friend’s middle, lifting norman from the floor and pulling him back quick to retreat. between the shouts ( some of disappointment that the fight has ended, some in hopes otto might join. ) and the blood smearing on his sweater as friend thrashes in his grasp, it’s all a bit too much for the scientist to take. ( otto has always been quickly overwhelmed. it makes him an easy target ) he carries the other outside, careful down the steps and onto the sidewalk, an attempt to get away from the noise. “ osborn, stop it. ” he tries, squeezing the man’s waist.
“ NORMAN. ” he snaps, all shyness seemingly gone from his tone, turning it into something sharp, something demanding of attention, and if norman could see his expression he might catch the glimpse of surprise in otto’s features, the bit of hurt at harsh tone.
“ norman. ” softer now, a bit hesitant. “ if i put you down are you going to try to run back in there ? or can we . . . can just we go get something to eat ? ” it’s a barter, and not a very good one, he knows. but as much strength as he has his back is starting to ache, and he really doesn’t feel like carrying norman down the porch steps again.

he does his best to ignore the boy, tweezers pinched between fingers adjusting small wiring, the metal plating is delicate, and while otto could have had someone in oscorp’s labs building such things for him, he has taken this on as a solo project for the majority, other people are distracting, get in the way, it’s one of the reasons he had worked so hard on the articulators, the arms knew him but more importantly their sole purpose was the work, no idle chatting necessary, just the silence of his own thoughts, the sounds of progress, and on days where he felt underestimated, music. ( it was supposed to be a quiet day, but it seems osborn has other plans. )
