Observing the landscape
Being able to observe the changes in landscape and relating these to underlaying rocks is extremely useful in terms of geological mapping or understanding the connection between the two.
Here you can see a contact between the limestone (right-hand side) and intrusive igneous rock (left-hand side). You can see that there is less vegetation on limestone, and that there is more exposed rock in comparison to the igneous rock. It is because limestone is deficient in nutrients plants need and therefore it produces poor infertile soils in comparison to igneous rock, which is rich in nutrients and produces clays as it weathers allowing plants to take good hold.
Such change in vegetation amplifies the difference in underlaying geology which helps the geologist to target places to visit while mapping.
