[Log #4] Back from Hiatus
October 2nd, 2023
Hi! I am not dead! It's a month since my last log and I want to give my apologies for not updating for a while.
Anyhow here is some gameplay footage!
Many changes since the last update!!!
-------------------------------------
Visual Consistency
In this build, I decided to downscale the resolution and update every gameplay element and UI to bring it closer to pixel art.
Haven't done that for the visual novel screen yet, but working on that for the next build!
Vincent and Scooty
Our catwink is now clothed and there are three Scootys facing YOU. I will aim to do another pass for both, but this may also be the final version lol
Junior and Gus to be added pretty soon!
Scope
Last but importantly, I want to mention I will release the game on December 25, 2023. xmasss
I enjoyed working on the project as a solo dev challenge and forcing myself to learn Godot and Aseprite alongside has made the experience pretty worth it.
Right now, I'm in the midst of figuring out what the hell I want to do with my life and over break I had a pretty deep, uh, existential crisis over my crappy time management.
I've half neglected the things I need to focus on in life and as much as I like how this project is going now, I won't be able to really move forward on that.
So maybe in the future once I've really settled down, I'll come back to add onto the project!
------------------------
I ended up writing for 2 hours on this short blog post since I forgot how to write so I will end it here.
Thanks for reading!

[PBH Log #3] Just For Consistency
September 5th, 2023
Hi! Am powbrick!! I already forgot how I wrote the intro on my last update!!! Anyways here's the footage of the week!!!!
(music suggestion by @spoderluks)
Unfortunately I got sick for half the week and couldn't find the drive to update many visuals as planned, so this will be a short update.
--- Godot Icon -> Peanut Bag
So long, pal. You did great work.
Angle-wise could make sense to animate Vincent kicking the bag at the gang (than throwing at them).
If they get more peanuts they likely wouldn't care
--- Some Shader FX
While I darkened the tile colors, I also added a gradient and played around with the table shadow using Godot's shader.
I went a lil crazy with this a while back lol
Tumblr media
(Also I had to replace the mosaic shader with yam in the recent build because render order-wise it conflicted with the bg shader)
(Emphasis on the "had to".)
--- Reworked the Emitter System
I won't get too much into this, but the next thing on the gameplay to-dos were sub-patterns. This way I could expand the creative bounds with the pattern attacks (in short, be more cruel to the player). I thought it wouldn't take long, but turns out the implementation in the last build wasn't ideally structured for sub-patterns, so I ended up re-coding majority of the emitter code.
No obvious feature is shown, but hoping the time I spent on this is well worth it in the long run.
-----------------------------------------------------
Generally I will note down Next Goals here, however I am tired today and next week will also be slow since I'm goin on a short vacation so we will see what gets done lol
-----------------------------------------------------
Thanks for reading and see ya next update!

[PBH Log 2] Hiding the Catbutt
2023/08/28
A ton of visual updates this week! Here's how it looks so far:
Temporarily added the mosaic shader because he naked
--- Basic player animation! ---
Personally it was the most challenging part of development this week. I've done some rough frame by frame animations in the past, but animating something presentable for a game? That's a different story.
Here's my first pass:
Tumblr media
My goal is to make it a silly and slightly nightmarish game, so tried to see how it looked if I made him overly twinky lol. Looking back on it, I could say it was more distracting and given that I want the player to focus on the bullets, I think it wouldn't be that worth putting the extra effort on this part.
I will likely do another pass for the next update to give him clothes lol
--- Other visual updates! ---
The other main visual change are peanut butter bullets! It took a bit to find a nice looking color scheme that didn't look like a flame.
Other sprite updates would be background floor tiles, hearts (cat shaped), and the center table.
-----------------------------------------------------
Next Update Goals
I'd say I'm close to the halfway mark for Milestone 2!
--- Godot Icon??? ---
This will be converted into a throwable bag of peanuts by next update. I promise it'll make sense narratively
--- Polishing character sprites ---
I will polish/draw up dialogue character portraits for all characters in the game and try to have a basic eating animation for the three peanut emitters.
--- More hell patterns ---
Will see if I can show more patterns next week since I've got some interesting ones like this one:
Tumblr media
Peanut shaped!
-----------------------------------------------------
That'll be all for this week! Thanks for reading!

[Intro Log] Peanut Butter Hell!!!
Tumblr media
Image: Temporary logo for the game
Welcome to my first dev post!???
This is a place where I (@powbrick) post game dev related content or the latest updates on any project I'm working on.
This post is a brief overview of my current project Peanut Butter Hell, which I've made regular updates on but haven't taken the time to fully explain.
Here's the Prototype Footage:
youtube
Game Overview
My goal is to make a Touhou-esque rhythmic bullet hell game where you play as Vincent the cat server who works at a small restaurant/cafe with his goat BF, Don.
One night, a starving gang orders a ton of peanut butter based meals which you are deathly allergic to. On top of that, they are messy eaters, so you must dodge their particles while you try to serve their orders.
Progress So Far
I have the main bullet hell and player mechanics functioning! The prototype is also playable without major issues.
It will be a while until I can release a public demo, but I'll let you all know when it's ready.
My latest update is the addition of some VN-style dialogue.
(fyi the visual novel part will be a small portion of the game since the main focus is bullet hell. I'm sorry if I disappoint)
Next Goals
I'm currently working towards making a semi-finalized version of the first section in the game. In short, that means more visual updates, fleshing out the introductory dialogue, and adding more bullet hell gameplay.
Lastly some FAQs!
I say FAQ but in reality only a few asked
Q. Who is working on the game so far?
All programming and character art are done by me!
Q. How serious is this project going to be?
Not sure yet. It's a solo hobby project but I do want to make it as good as I can, so I maaay bring in some people(??) idk
Q. How long as the game been developed?
For a month now! First week was figuring out which engine to heckin commit to
Q. What engine are you using?
Godot 4.0.2 using GDScript!
Q. is there sauce
no sauce sadly
Thanks for reading and stay tuned for updates!
