“I just saw a dog that was half Teacup Chihuahua and half German Shepard and I can’t stop wondering how it happened.” Scout giggled at the person who sat down next to her on the park bench. “I mean, of all the possible mixed breeds out there, I truly never expected to see that one and it’s made my day. The owner let me take a picture of him, do you want to see?” She pulled out her phone and excitedly showed them the photo.

claraofsorrow:
“You two will take good care of your new little sister, now, won’t you? She’s your responsibility now.” Clara said kindly, smiling to the two children. They both agreed enthusiastically and said their goodbyes before running off to their father, who was waiting for them nearby. “Bye!” Clara called with a wide smile, waving to the family as she got up. The father waved back and beckoned the kids to cross the street. Clara sighed to herself and turned to see someone looking up at the hospital building. She walked over to them “Everything alright?” The doctor asked, wondering if maybe they needed something and were too shy or nervous to go in.
Ten minutes till her shift started and Scout was still debating whether she should get someone to cover for her. She hated the idea of putting the burden on someone else, though she never thought of her job as a burden. But she was still fairly new to the hospital and calling in would make her seem unreliable. Still, she had a strong urge to immediately head home to check on Jamie. Just as she was about to start moving toward the door, a kind voice pulled Scout from her thoughts. Turning she realized it was one of nicer doctors, not that Scout thought any of them were mean, just that Dr. Palacios seemed to have that extra touch.
“Oh, yes, of course,” she answered the doctor softly. “It’s just that my son’s got a little bit of a cold and it’s the first time that the babysitter has had to watch him while he was sick. And she’s still so new, or rather we are. And I just feel a little nervous leaving my sick child to go take care of other sick people. Not that I don’t appreciate helping others. I love it. I just wish I could be in two places at once, you know?”

lucia-the-outcast:
“What the heck?!” Lucia turned around, glancing in the opposite direction as she felt a rock smack the back of her head. Her hand pressed against it gently, her eyes scanning the area where again no one was there. Ever since she came to this town, weird things had started happening to her… maybe it was because she found that tree of little flying people… She shuddered at the thought. “I, um, anyways, I think I was explaining the Hawthorne effect, right?” Another rock to her head, “Okay, this is getting ridiculous… Did you see anyone?”
Scout’s head cocked in concern as the girl exclaimed, her own eyes traveling in the direction Lucia had turned. She started to ask if Lucia was okay, but the girl was already returning to their conversation only for her to flinch and yell again. At her question, Scout shook her head, but the nurse instinct began to take over.
“No, but maybe I should look at the back of your head to see where whatever it is impacted you?”
