Embracer is breaking up to further distance its AAA videogames business away from the 0.9b dollar debt, which will be attached to the board game arm - Asmodee.
This will make their video game business far more attractive to investors.
This is good news.
I repeat louder for the back - THIS IS GOOD NEWS.
So don’t sweat it, LoK fans. Nothing the group has done has given me cause to worry about LoK’s future.
As long as Crystal Dynamics is still trading, there is hope.

I’m watching a video of the first Witcher game, hoping to find a new series to scratch that medieval sword & sorcery itch while we wait for LoK news.
The music, those menus, the NPC cries and sound effects — It’s giving me such Blood Omen vibes, I almost expect Geralt to yell ‘Vae Victus!’ after every kill.

"The Pillars of Nosgoth... pristine, whole and uncorrupted.
I had never beheld them in this undefiled state - yet something profound and indelible resonated within me at the sight.."
Raziel is done! I went for the Soul Reaver 2 style, since he is on the corrupted pillar.
He was so fun and I got to practice more OSL! Having Raziel as a mini makes me so happy, as the LoK series is very close to my heart.
I hope you like him!

Games companies making games “A bold strategy.” The irony is not lost on PC Gamer.
Note that Crystal Dynamics may have lost staff but the company seems to have survived this cull, and it appears they are not for sale.
It can’t all be for Tomb Raider, surely, since we know they are only assisting Amazon with the next instalment.
So what are Crystal Dynamics up to?
What indeed. 🤔
With all the trends of videogame vampires, and epic chosen-one narratives. Nostalgia is strong with Tomb Raider and Gex re-masters. Is it too bold a strategy to hope for a Legacy of Kain re-master/reboot?
If I was Embracer, I know what I would be instructing Crystal to do.

corrupted godhood. reluctant false messiah. prophecy as a creeping all consuming malady. does the oracle see the future or make the future? the horror of trapping yourself inescapably on purpose. the chains of destiny dragging you towards the path you are fighting tooth and nail to free yourself from. there never having been a chance to begin with. no other choice to make. but making that choice regardless.

Vorador Crypt and Pillars Diagram Mural Characters: Vorador and Janos Audron The artworks are from the same chapter 8 of the game, the crypt is in Vorador's mansion. I dedicate this painting to the illustrator Kory Heinzen who inspired me over 20 years ago to draw the amazing world of Nosgoth and the characters of the games. Big thank You Kory

I’ve seen something like this before, I don’t think it’s the first time someone has used Skyrim to recreate Legacy of Kain.
I’m sure I saw a vid of a Skyrim mod where they’d recreated the Sanctuary of the Clans in Skyrim for a machina roleplay. But this a new article, and talks about quests available, etc, so it was worth a share.
I might have to try it sometime. Starved as we are for any sort of new Legacy of Kain content. 😔

This voice from the sword:
Tumblr media
When you accidentally picked up a cursed sword, hearing it speak you expected the worst; demands of bloodshed, violence.. you didn’t expect that it would consider itself equally cursed to be attached to you.

So to me. I would actually start with soul reaver as the first one due to its popularity and for a plot reason
I would start with Raziel raising a fledgling vampire and teaching him/her the way of things…….this is our training section where Raziel teaches his child how to fight and hunt while obviously showing us how to play
This would also have Raz telling the origin of vampires or at least the false history that Kain was the first vampire and sired the entire race from nothing…….He’s set himself up as God
Then this when one of the brothers arrive and say that Raziel has been summoned to the throne room as father wishes a word
This leads into wing ripping
now for the elder God. I wouldn’t show what he looks but have him manifest in various abstract forms…before revealing what it looks like
I would tweak it slightly and have it speak in two voices. The classic deep voice and then a female voice….
To set it apart from Tony jay
to make it seem more divine as it likely doesn’t have a real gender
I really like this approach too. It makes sense because Soul Reaver is arguably more popular than Blood Omen. Although, as writer, I would worry that without Kain’s full back story in advance, players would not have that prior knowledge of who the character is or why they should care.
That said, with careful execution (no pun intended) the mystery of who Kain is, what happened to him to place him on the throne and the whole lore and history surrounding the pillars and the circle of nine, could be told in a ‘discovery of the past’ rather than shown by action and experience of Kain’s origin.
It would also negate the need to offer that choice at the end of Blood Omen and then having to renege that choice from the player and lock in an ending that perhaps they didn’t personally choose. Which is something I’ve always disliked in gaming.
I know there are some schools of thought saying that you can’t replace Tony Jay, but my dudes, that’s just life. I like the idea that the Elder God could be genderless, but I’d worry it might lead to either confusion with Ariel, or high distrust of her, due to people wondering if she’s really the The Elder God in disguise.
Mystery and intrigue is a powerful incentive to keep playing and discovering. But writers would have to be careful not to introduce a big red herring into the plot and lead players to suspect something that might detract from the final reveal.
I’m just thinking of my recent experience of Starfield and suspicions of who the Hunter was. The foreshadowing led me down a very different path and when the reveal happened, I was way off base, and it landed like a damp squib, rather than a ‘oh bloody hell, it’s you.’ I was like ‘who’? Oh, okay then. It was such a missed opportunity.
They could have done something really clever there and I suspect originally they did but it was changed because of time or tech restraints. That age old tale of games development getting in the way of decent story telling.
Personally I love Raziel, so I would have no problem with a series that concentrates solely on him, with Kain being the Emperor of the piece and the Elder God being the unknowable Eldritch horror behind the scenes.

In case anyone was wondering what I meant by the LAU treatment in my reply to that ask, it’s a reference to the first time Crystal Dynamics rebooted Tomb Raider.
Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld. They are a perfect trilogy, and a masterclass in how to reboot a beloved series with a complete remake, a update on the old story, new tech, new puzzles, new script, new actors, a complete modern refresh.
They did all of that while tapping into old nostalgia and still keeping it feeling like Tomb Raider. It was still the old Lara, it was still her story which we all remember and enjoyed. But it looked and sounded gorgeous and was oh so playable.
That’s how I wish Crystal Dynamics would reboot Legacy of Kain.

We’re in charge of the next legacy of Kain …..what would your approach be?”
Thank you for sending me this.
I cannot speak for anyone else, but if I were in charge, it would be a total remake. I would give it the LAU treatment. It would essentially be the same story, with the same characters, but updated. A reimagining.
Take the story back to the start and remake it with today’s tech, upgraded physics, controls, fight mechanics, new puzzles, the entire works.
But the most important thing is that it feels like a Legacy of Kain game.
For that you’d have to use the same rich aesthetic with deep, jewelled colours of the original series. Not the washed-out, grey-brown AC/Skyrim style palette that was all the rage in the last decade.
Remaster the soundtrack with strong leanings into the original themes.
Ideally enlist the help of Amy Hennig with the script and direction. She’s still out there, making games. I’m sure she’d love to remake and finish what she started. Allow her to tell the story she wanted to tell without interference.
If Amy wasn't available, at least stay true to that original tone. One of the most applauded things about Legacy of Kain is the Shakespearean-style dialogue, and that can’t change. Or it just won’t feel like Legacy of Kain.
Recast with some of the new exceptional voice talent out there today. Don’t be hung up on ‘you can’t recast this role’ - it’s been done before in other series and worked amazingly well (God of War, for example). I’ll save my ideal LoK recastings for another post.
Start with Blood Omen. But keep the third-person action adventure style of the Soul Reaver era.
Re-write the story with diverse characters.
Don’t fall into the Trinity trap. The rule of thumb in writing circles is this. If your female character can be replaced by a signpost for your male protagonist to learn from and surpass without changing the story, then she wasn’t a ‘strong female character’ after all.
Disclaimer - Ariel is not a strong female character, but she was never meant to be. Someone had to play that role, be it male or female. That doesn't mean there cannot be others. But I’d rather have no representation than bad representation.
Gender-bending a few of the brothers would be one way to do it. Or re-instate the sorceress content. But no nudity, and no modern swearing. Sex is great, but if all you have is sex appeal, strip that away, it’s still a bad game. Sex appeal is just unnecessary window dressing to a story like Legacy of Kain.
Don’t use poor treatment of a female character to motivate your male protagonist. Raziel didn’t need female trauma dangled in front of him as motivation, and neither should Kain, or anyone else, for that matter.
Bodyshock is fine. It's always been part of Legacy of Kain, but again, don’t take a pregnant woman and turn her and her child into some kind of abomination. Female trauma for shocks is cheap. If you’re going to do that to a female protagonist (say, Ripley, for example), then at least you’re not taking away her agency. But if you’re doing it just to motivate your male character, it takes away her agency and becomes highly misogynistic.
Above all, finish the story. Don’t let Raziel heal the scion of balance and then say, ‘Oh well, part three was the end of the story’ - make his journey and sacrifice mean something.
Allow your protagonists to jump around in time, but their personal journeys must have a beginning, a middle, and a meaningful, satisfying end.
What do you think? How would you do it? Let me know your thoughts.
