Hi, love each post you make, do you have any tips on colour gradients? Yours always feel so natural
Hi, and thanks!
Here's my basic method for blackwork gradients, though I'm sure there are other ways to do it: Start by working out a motif you want to repeat. Then make a few copies of it, each one replacing a few more stitches with your new colour. You end up with something like this:
Tumblr media
Fitting it into the space you want will take a bit of math and some vibes-based design, particularly if you want your gradient to happen on a curve or in an organic-ish shape. If you want your gradient in a straight or diagonal line, it's just a question of how much space you have and how many rows you need for a full transition.
Good luck and happy designing!

We were lucky enough to have the opportunity to send an Old Gregg to Old Gregg himself. Still can't believe this is real!

Singles to finished yarn. Merino split in half lengthwise spun and plied. I love how finishing gives the yarn fullness.
1. Singles
2. Two full bobbins
3. Plyed
4. Before finishing
5. Soaked and snapped

You ever see a thing and know with bone deep certainty, and a little bit ferociously feral-ity(is that a word?) that you need to make the thing?

The world may really suck right now but sometimes you can take string and turn it into fabric and that’s pretty neat.

Everyone warned me and I did it anyway because no one is the boss of me
Was anybody going to warn me that yarn crafts are highly addicting and once you start there is no escape....
Help.

I finally bought a blending board after years of indecision. It just arrived 10 minutes ago and I made my first rolag! I know what I’ll be doing for the next week instead of my responsibilities

Took a weaving class over the weekend and finally finished the project! The class was over summer and winter weaving structure, so when you turn the fabric over the colors are reversed. This pattern is 160 years old. I love the colors I chose for this project!

I finished plying my last spin yesterday. Now I’m in indecision mode with my next spin. I received the multicolor fiber in a fiber club (Nest Fiber, Solar Power on BFL) in July of 2021 and loved it so much I ordered the semisolid coordinates. Here we are, almost 4 years later and it’s time! I’m thinking of chain plying the multicolor to keep the long stripes and keeping the coordinates solid.
Thoughts?

WE DON’T GATEKEEP WEAVING TECHNIQUES IN THIS HOUSEHOLD!
So to start this is double cloth (meaning I have two different warps, they’re threaded on 4 frames and each slot in the reed has two strings, one from each warp)
Tumblr media
Step one: lift up the entirety of one warp (for me, pedals 2 and 4), then select the design with a pickup stick/sword/the fiber only thingy
Tumblr media
Step 2: Go to your OTHER warp (1 and 3 for me) with the stick still in and do a back and forth of plain weave, take the stick out to beat
Tumblr media
Step 3: Pick up the background with the stick (aka anything you didn’t pick up before, 1 and 3 for me)
Tumblr media
Step four: Plain weave with the other warp AND a different weft (2 and 4 for me) take out the stick and beat
Tumblr media
Step 5: Repeat! You can do this with any pixel designs, provided you have enough warp strings to have 2 per square
Fair warning, be EXTREMELY careful with your selvages (edges of the warp), they pull in the sides a lot more than regular plain weave. Happy weaving!
