Thinking about the KotoKoto duo again, I just find their relationship really interesting tbh
What if we both continued to believe that nothing is wrong in our lives? What if we continued to bury our emotions to the point of them overflowing with extreme anger and unhappiness towards ourselves and our circumstances? Destroying myself through the mundanity of capitalism while you destroy yourself through the extremity of vigilantism, and yet none of us have ever really lived a fulfilling life as young adults
What if you hated me so much that you continually pushed my attempts to bond with you away? What if you hated my entire existence, but I merely only wanted to befriend you because of my friendly nature? What if you (potentially) reminded me of a sibling, and that is why I cannot leave you be so easily? I hold a kind of softness in my heart for you, yet all you have for me is complete scorn

In trial 3, I think Amane should open her VD by telling Es, in her most deadpan and vindicated tone, they're incorrect about the age of adulthood in Puerto Rico and Haiti.

Before I watched "Backdraft", the first thing I thought of was the "trope" Internet Backdraft. (Not meant to be troped, as it is classified as "flame bait")
In short, a controversial event occurs, causing flame wars. After they finally put out the fire, some newbie comes in and brings it up, starting the fire all over again.
I suppose if you try to fit Fuuta's situation into the trope, you have:
Fuuta leads a smear campaign, resulting in someone's death.
The outrage dies down, or Fuuta winds up in MILGRAM. (Eh, either of these would be a stretch)
Fuuta is declared unforgiven, and the events come back to haunt him.
(Old draft from December...)

Absolutely obsessed with Arthur Lounsbery owning a Milgram-esque jacket and getting excited for the chance to wear it -- I thought it'd be fun to see Fuuta in it! (And now I'm jealous, I want one 👀)

this is literally one of my favorite frames in all of milgram... the projection being bigger than the real him. the facade has grown more important than the real him will ever be. the apple is in front of him in the past, he'll bite it, inevitably, but in the present, the chair is empty. the presence of something echoes through the theater, but its source is long gone. now that he's gotten too greedy. now that everyone has stopped seeing the projection. now that there is just a disappointing aftertaste of the real kazui mukuhara.

Victim Mikoto
and John
(Mikoto's poll) (John's poll)
I got hit with burnout at this point. Who would've thought? It was a combination of my determination to do a split expression and the general difficulty of making Mikoto look like Mikoto.
...And then I proceeded to sketch out Mahiru's drawing in the time it took for this to dry.
[Image ID: A watercolor pencil drawing of T2 Mikoto with a split expression. One eye looks nervous, and the other looks resigned. His right hand rests on his shoulder. The drawing is primarily blue and black. The background is light blue with a black diamond around the head. /end ID]

When I see people say something along the lines of Mikoto being boring and John being a more interesting character... it's like. Hm. Isn't it the very nature of Kayano Mikoto and his environment such that it would fulfill this? There are a certain type of mentally ill people who are better suited for late stage capitalism in the worst way possible. They are more likely to throw everything into overworking whilst neglecting their own health, more likely to take workplace abuse without standing up for themselves.
Isn't it messed up that when things get too much for Mikoto, when he's about to break, he forms a new part to cope with that, so he can go back to working, to being the perfect worker? All the while any resistance he might have, any anger, is cut away. Because outwardly displaying anger, that's dangerous - cut that away. Establishing boundaries and speaking up is dangerous, so cut that away too. Until he no longer has the ability to do those things. With every new alter, "Mikoto" becomes less and less, becoming two-dimensional, becoming palatable. To the point that it almost seems he's at risk of fading away from existence altogether. Until "Mikoto" becomes nonexistent. Having stripped away anything undesirable and becoming what others want of him. His boss, his coworkers, societal expectations, his own impossible standards. He can never be a person who stands up. Once those desires arise, they'll be stripped away again. Mikoto is "factory-made". He is nothing special. He is nothing. He has no identity of his own.
After brandishing that poisonous desire to monopolize And having erased you completely
Surprisingly, I don't really see any debates over who between Mikoto and John could truly be considered the person who commited the murders. The one who has the most of the person who killed, or the one who holds most of the memories of the murder? Is it memories that make the person? Which memories, then? The murders themselves? Everything else that led up to it? Though this easily ends up becoming pointlessly specific and existential, and besides, MILGRAM has already decided the answer for us, by making one the prisoner and not the other.
One might argue that the Aegean ship is the Ariadne, because a ship does not cease to exist when only one of its constituent planks is replaced; hence, during the gradual replacement of its planks, there was no point at which the Ariadne ceased to be the ship it originally was. But one could also argue that the Piraean ship is the Ariadne, because the Piraean ship and the Ariadne (at the first moment of its existence) are composed of exactly the same planks arranged in exactly the same way. Note that one could not argue that both the Aegean ship and the Piraean ship are the Ariadne, because that would entail, by the principle of the transitivity of identity (if a = b and b = c, then a = c), that the Aegean ship and the Piraean ship are numerically identical to each other.
"I'm already the fake one". Which part is the one that society will acknowledge as the real one? The one who submits, or the one who exhibits righteous anger, the person who stubbornly stands his ground, who doesn’t cry himself to sleep from stress, who gives people their payback? It has to be the former, right? That's the one society would recognize as the one that matters, not the one that fights back, no.
i'm already living in a time loop it's called being employed
Something I've never seen anyone talk about is how, in a time loop, it won't get better tomorrow. Today sucked and you'll have to do it again, and again, and again. Maybe you'll learn the pattern and repress your emotions until everything seems fine because the moment you snap it all goes to hell again. Maybe you let the world know about your misery and it hits you stronger in return. Maybe you fight back and realize that it's not cathartic when you know you'll have to endure it again next loop There's no comfort. It'll be the same or worse next time.
You see, Double is a metaphorical time loop. Same day. Same routine. Until it blurs together. Always the same route. Never going off the tracks.
A train journey that had to repeat every day. A story that's doomed to repeat itself. How many times has the events in Double repeated? A hundred, a thousand times? How many of "him" has faded in and out of existence? How do we ever prove they existed? John is the only one who is named - for the convenience of Es, and the audience, by extension. We know him, MILGRAM will forever be a record of his existence. Is the one Ore protects and saves the only one he believes matters. No, it doesn't matter how many more are cut away, as long as "Mikoto" is safe, right? "Hey now, I saved you right?"
Take that scenario, repeat it, multiply it. A hundred times. A thousand times. On and on. Perhaps Mikoto would have learned nothing from MILGRAM. As soon as he achieves "normality" again and returns to the outside, he will go back to repeating this forever. To overworking. For the events of MeMe and Double to happen all over again. On and on.
Take it.
Repeat it.
Multiply it.
Ad nauseum.
