Thoughts on Nagi (not) having friends

[with additional thoughts on Barou and Rin also not having friends]

I saw many posts expressing disappointment in the author's comment that Nagi isn't close with anyone outside of Team V trio.

I get it, considering some of his lighter, most wholesome and hilarious moments in the manga are with Barou and Chigiri, Isagi and also Bachira.

I love that people want Nagi to have friends and a strong support system since he didn't grow up with one. 🤍

However, as someone who feels very similar in personality to Nagi, I feel like I can immediately understand why he wouldn't feel "close" to people easily.

People who prefer their own company for the most part and don't get lonely that easily are used to keeping a distance from others. For Nagi, even meeting Reo was something serendipitous and becoming friends with him was definitely not achieved through his own efforts. Reo had to stalk him, kidnap him in a car, chase him around school, carry him on his back and get down on his knees with candy (lmao) in order to win his trust and his time.

I think that while other more naturally social characters would be able to form connections even in an environment like Blue Lock, characters like Nagi, Rin and Barou, owing to their personalities would find it hard to feel close to most people. Getting close to someone is extra effort on top of enjoying someone's company or liking them as a person. So it would not happen unless the other person continues to insert themselves into their lives by force until their presence becomes part of the new status quo.

I don't think this in any way means they aren't fond of any other people who are nice to them (I support all their condescending hater moments too! 😤)

Okay maybe a huge stretch to say Rin is fond of people 🙈 but Barou has gradually revealed a softer side albeit begrudgingly and Nagi too actively socialises when he does have the energy (usually when excited during matches or when something or someone piques his curiosity, or when trying to annoy Barou lmao). Nagi also readily expresses strong admiration for other Blue Lockers on many occasions throughout the main manga and his own.

So I believe there are many people he really likes and has fun with and learns a lot from (as much as you can like people while playing death-game style football that is) but "close" is something that would take time as this is a guy with a very low social battery who isn't really in the habit of sharing his thoughts (not for seventeen years at least). Even with Reo, who we can very safely say he is close to, he has been learning how to do that through trial and error which often leads to ugly misunderstandings. But maybe he will be able to do it more easily and with more people in the future.

And if not, there's always Choki.🌵🤍

Anytime you think Reo can't get more Mika-gay he bravely stands up (or rather, kneels down) and says "Watch me 😏" Honestly, good on him.

Nagi's :x face is so cute here 🥺 also his clothes are so cottagecore it makes me want to put him in a little gingerbread house and give him a sewing machine (I actually saw someone do that with a Nagi doll on insta it was adorable?!!)

PS: The fact that it was Rin who bumped into Nagi was such a fun surprise!

Episode Nagi special chapter thoughts on that one line.

At first glance it felt like Nagi's parents telling him something like "don't die before me" was the most insensitive thing they could possibly say to their teenage kid as he left for high school. But the interesting part is that Nagi mentions this as an example of something they did that made him happy.

One could infer that Nagi is used to receiving such little love and attention from his parents that them merely mentioning that he should stay alive was something he accepted as a moment of joy. However, that might be too simplistic.

Just like being monster parents can create a very strained relationship with your child (e.g. Reo's parents, or even more evidently, Hiori's parents), a too hands-off approach could also easily lead to neglect and suppressed feelings of loneliness within the child. In the panel above, Nagi states that Reo's parents being meddlesome isn't so bad since it means he's important to them. The implication is clear, and sad. But later, when he repeats the words his own parents said to him, it complicates things a little.

Perhaps saying this was a way for Nagi's parents to subtly remind him that despite their chosen (and arguably flawed) parenting style which grants him free will to live however he wants, he is in fact important to them. Sort of like "you can do anything you want, but this is our only rule." They want him around. They don't want to live in a world without him.

And perhaps that was why it made him happy. He recognised it as something you would say to someone who was important to you. And so he says it to his friend (very possibly the first friend he's had). It is also very reminiscent of the promise he asks for later while entering Blue Lock: "Stay with me until the end." It definitely sheds some more light on the things Nagi values when it comes to interpersonal relationships, and adds a tender and wistful layer to his backstory.

On a lighter note,

I LOVE that Nagi will be full on judging rich people interior decor one second only to suddenly turn around and say some of the most mysterious deep shit that will turn your insides cold and in the next second just shrug and be like oh well, later then Reo, byeee.

Happy Episode Nagi Movie Premiere Day 🤍

✨a few thoughts✨

It feels significant any time a character I can relate to is platformed as the main character of anything. When I first started watching Blue Lock I didn't know there was a spin off or that there would be a movie. I was simply drawn to this character because I found him to be the most interesting and relatable.

Usually I cannot relate much to the endless determination and positivity of classic battle/sports anime protagonists even though I do love many of them as characters. What I like about Nagi is that he doesn't really get over his laziness and lack of motivation completely even 250+ chapters into the manga. I like it in the sense that I think it's very realistic. It's not so easy to just magically find motivation one day and keep it consistent if you're a low-energy person who gets tired easily (even if you have prodigal talent). This also makes him quite a polarising character because his sudden spikes and dips in motivation often translate to unpredictable actions that can blindside others even if he means well.

I am always wondering how he will find his "ego" eventually and what it will be. The way his death aura shifts and changes with his emotions is also very exciting to see both in terms of the plot and the artwork. I wonder if it will have some kind of a deadly final form once he does discover what he truly seeks from football and from the people around him. Or maybe he will fail to find a solid, lasting motivation and will have to figure out some other way to stay focused. Or maybe he just never figures it out.

In any case I think the themes around Nagi are more complex than the usual lazy genius trope - and they have the potential for a deep and realistic exploration of human nature within this framework of a highly competitive environment. Which is why I'm very thankful for his spin-off and the movie. I have high hopes for how his story will advance, which scares me (because what if in the end I feel like "oh well that ending was kind of dumb") but considering he is the author's favourite I will keep my fingers crossed and enjoy the ride. 🖤🤍

Nagi’s talent

I find it so fascinating that one of the main things holding Nagi back from being up there is the fact that he knows NOTHING about soccer!

You have people like Rin, Isagi, Bachira, basically everyone else in Blue Lock, who have played soccer and have been extremely passionate about soccer since they were LITTLE. And then there is Nagi who is just like “yeah… I don’t really know anything about soccer… I am just here as a favor to my friend” and is INSANELY good!! Who is beating people like Rin and Isagi who have been doing this for years! (When I mean beat I mean like on 1v1s not in the game itself)

Like that really speaks on just how TALENTED Nagi is and I can see why other players want him because when you are that good and the only hang up is that you know nothing of soccer, it is easy to fantasize on just how good that player would be if they were educated in everything soccer!

Now I think the main issues is that Nagi needs to find his Ego but I do think his lack of knowledge about soccer is a big hang up as well and just thinking about what he could be if he did know like he would be one of the main players dominating Blue Lock (at least I believe so)!

I also love his temperament! Like when everyone else is fucking intense and crazy, it is almost refreshing to see someone not panicking or acting like it is the end of the world when someone steals the ball or scores a goal.

Like his calm disposition is honestly really cool to me and I think that is why Ego doesn’t like him that much! Because while Rin and Isagi will act like fucking psycho’s and can be influenced by Ego’s crazy, you have Nagi who like “yeah it’s not that deep.” And then calmly do some insane shit! Idk he is just so cool to me!

Anyway I love Nagi as a character and as a player and I always get excited when he is playing because he is so unpredictable and I love it! I hope this made sense!

I am so excited for the Episode Nagi music to drop!

I loved the songs for Blue Lock's first season and I think they are definitely a very effective hook to get you watching the anime (great songs and hilarious additional time sequences are what made me forgive some of the bad cgi lol). Both the openings in particular are so good. And from the little sneak peek we got of the one song in the EpiNagi trailer I have no doubts that the music will rock this time too. ❤️🔥
