Hey friends!

So last year you might remember I did an AKF book project for Jared and gave it to him at Asylum 14, which he loved. This year I made Jared and Jensen books with small messages of love and positivity to remind them they are loved and to love themselves first. Both projects raised a little money for TWLOHA which was an added bonus! These were also really well received! It’s been awesome to give them something special but also help fans get a message to them, especially if they may not be able to meet them. And now I have a new project!

I’d actually planned this for Asylum 16 but as Jared wasn’t announced until quite late on, I felt like there wasn’t enough time to raise enough funds. So I’ve decided to start it now! I’ll be attending JIBCon, which Jared is already confirmed for, so I’m starting this project now to give plenty of time to raise money!

So what’s the project?

I want to get an award made for Jared. So many people (myself included) say how much Jared deserves awards for his acting, so I decided why don’t we get one made for him? We can raise money to get an award made for him, not only to honour his acting but also his charity work and just to celebrate how wonderful he is as a person. But of course an award won’t be cheap and sadly I’m not in the position to be paying by myself! 

You guys can help by:

I may add a book or something to go with the award, I’d like at least something that credits every single donor. 

The current goal is £300 but this will likely change once an award design has been finalised - then I can get an estimate of how much the award will cost to be made!

let’s talk about how amazing Avatar: The Last Airbender is for a second

Fantasy world not based on typical medieval Europe

Was a children’s show that openly discussed war, death and genocide

Had several handicapped characters, one of whom was the show’s most powerful person

Every single character was a person of color, drawn to represent Asian and Inuit peoples

Had a character story arc centered around both emotional and physical parental abuse, whose arc was about learning that they didn’t need the parent who abused them

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL ART STYLE AND DIRECTION

Three dimensional writing that rivals even most adult dramas

Characters dealt with sexism in society

Showed citizens on both sides of the war, including showing how the people in the enemy nation were merely influenced by propaganda and an oppressive regime

Had romances that developed overtime and actually talked about the issues of forming a relationship instead of just “and now they’re in love.”

Characters died. On a children’s show. Characters who you fucking knew! Who had story arcs and were their friends and were kids like them!

When those characters died, they left an impact. It wasn’t ignored after a few episodes, the feelings they had for these characters stayed through the entire show

Had environmental messages that weren’t cheesy, and they made you take the destruction of the environment seriously

SUPERB world building, fleshing out many cultures and histories that always felt real

Had a magic system that never felt like magic. It always felt natural and like a solid part of this world with rules that couldn’t be broken

The cute animal sidekicks weren’t just there to sell toys. They were characters who had so much emotion to them and were vital parts of the show’s dynamic. Also, the animals never talked yet somehow still portrayed an insane emotional level that some Disney films only dream of

Spawned a sequel series that dealt not only with sexism, but with sexuality, religion, and the benefits and dangers from the rapid progression of technology

The point is, Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the greatest shows of all time and the proof is right there

I’ve noticed this revisionist Greek myth is common wherein Persephone loves Hades and eats the pomegranate seeds in order to evade her overbearing mother, and that’s all well and good. You know, sometimes I’m in the mood for it and sometimes I’m not. But hear this: as long as we’re doing this, why is no one wondering whether Aphrodite might really love Hephaestus? 

Think about it. All the gods in their immortal splendor are lining up to marry her, doing everything in their power to impress her, the goddess of love and beauty, and she choses…that guy. A god in technical terms only, a social reject who’s ugly and malformed and um, no fun. Always slaving away in his workshop when everyone else is quaffing nectar and having their eternal beach party up on Mount Olympus. They can’t believe she’d give up all of them for that. 

So, because the gods do not take rejection well (looking at you Apollo), eventually they start to say to each other, well, we all know Zeus made her do it anyway. He’s gotta feel guilty for throwing Hephaestus off Mount Olympus that one time. And it quickly becomes that poor girl, stuck in that workshop full of sweat and dirt and cyclopses when she could have had one of us. Because of course they’ve got love all figured out; it’s entirely technical and dependent on who’s the most charming and good-looking and not at all variable and strange and notoriously unpredictable, right?

Meanwhile Ares, only the most arrogant and brainless of the crew, can’t take a hint and is still showing up wherever Aphrodite goes trying to hit on her, so eventually she and Hephaestus decide to rig up an elaborate mechanical trap for him, using her as bait. When all the gods have laughed at him for getting caught he huffily attempts to regain his dignity by telling them, whatever, guys, you want to know the truth, I was meeting her for an assignation. And they all kind of know he’s full of it but they just accept it as the unvarnished truth from thereon in, because they’d love to believe she’d cheat on Hephaestus with Ares. They’d love it. Come on, Aphrodite, get off your high horse and admit you’re just as shallow as the rest of us. 

So they talk, but Aphrodite doesn’t really care about their collective jealousy because she dotes on her misshapen genius of a husband with his sooty hands and his sweaty brow who always takes her seriously and is always so hard at work inventing astonishing new things to make her happy, and she loves the volcano they live in with its internal pressures so conducive to the formation of precious stones and its passages lit with glowing lava that so gorgeously offsets her cheekbones, and all the cyclopses worship her because even with one eye apiece they’ve still got more depth perception than most men do where she’s concerned. True it is that as a couple the two develop a reputation for not getting out much, because all those Olympian parties bore them to death and they’d rather spend time with each other (poor Aphrodite, she’s such a vivacious young thing and her husband is so grasping and insecure that he won’t let her go out and have fun), but they do all right.
