I love how in Victory of the Daleks (one of the episodes in the fifth season of Doctor Who), when the doctor is trying to dismantle the bomb that the Daleks left on Earth in the form of an Android, he tries to make him into a human again by reminding him of his pain, and the feelings of loss that he associated with his family. But when that ended up not working, Amy ended up reminding him of the love that he had for someone else in the past. And that really encapsulates what the doctor and his companion are about; the doctor lives through loss; he associates what it means to be human through pain, but Amy sees life through a lens of optimism.
