it had taken her a ball or two , but elena was finally warming up to her new reality . she wasn't particularly passionate about it all , but she no longer felt completely out of place and miserable stepping outside of her temporary home . the only thing that had become quite daunting to her was exactly how often these grand social gatherings continued to happen . were their feet not aching ? their voice not fading ? elena was exhausted , physically and socially . if they told her she needed to don a corset at the next dawn , she would surely find the sharpest shears and rid herself of every rib crushing garment available .

seeing what used to be stranger's faces now becoming familiar ones , well that made some of it all worth it . one of her favorite faces to see , though she would not admit it to anyone just yet , was of the marquess . packington . she appreciated his demeanor at the events they'd coincided in , as did most ladies of the ton as well . his face was also easy to appreciate .

there were many things to be absorbed now that elena was part of " society " . terminology , family names , even the fashion differed a bit from home . a lot of it she found fun , though . every time she knew the queen would be attending an event , she looked forward to seeing what jewels she'd be flaunting along with the colors of her dresses . and , of course , the queen's dogs were her most constant accessories .

elena was growing to appreciate the lifestyle of the ton . not because she enjoyed the business of the balls , but because of the day after . when everyone seemed to deem a promenade the activity of the day , including those hosting her . they did it with the intention of socialization and a chance to invite others over to try their wine . for elena , however , it was a chance to sit near water again , and to secretly dip her toes in it when no one seemed to be watching . this time , though , there was someone near where she usually sat to do this . a very known someone .

this was the second ball of the season she , and the archibalds , were invited to . her ... gracious sponsors and hosts seemed to be quite known within the ton , and when they weren't attending an event , their home was filled with visitors . this could also be due to them having the biggest vineyard elena had ever seen , and a wine cellar to match . still , while they were accustomed to such a social lifestyle , elena was not . not to this extent . which is how the lemonade table became her comfort beacon . she stood strategically close enough and far enough to be able to people watch without seeming odd , and she never had a parched night .
