In the process of cementing my Tsunami design. She’s fun to draw, but I am ✨ struggling ✨to nail it down.

Here are some early concepts. One exploring colors, and the other facial features. I want her to be a deep blue, paired with hints of aquamarine, but these colors weren’t dark enough for me.

These colors are closer to what I have in mind, but are a bit washed out. I also like her face in this one.

The other thing I wanted to get right were her shape language and specific bodily features. The left image was an attempt to sketch out her full body. She’s described as sleek, so I wanted to incorporate smooth flowing shapes, while also giving her an athletic body. She’s big and strong, but not as burly as Clay. Tsunami is also described as having a long neck, but that part keeps kicking me in the shin because I can’t make it look right. I think the rightmost image is closer to what I envision for her: a longish neck, and a sleek and sturdy body. I’m also struggling to find the right balance with her face. I want her to have a large snout, a square jawline, and large round eyes, but sometimes the snout looks a little too big for my liking, or the proportions are off and she ends up looking younger than I want her to be.

These two images were meant to explore some of her whorl/wave patterns. They have been the hardest thing to figure out, and I still haven’t settled on anything,

Here’s to hoping I can figure it out. I think it’ll come down to mishmashing my favorite sketches together.

I’ve had awful art block lately, but Scarlet has set me free.

My headcanon voice for her is Susan Sarandon’s portrayal of Queen Narissa from Enchanted. It’s perfectly villainous, theatrical, on the deeper side, and has a fittingly raspy quality to it. It helps that many of Narissa’s lines sound exactly like something Scarlet would say. I ended up listening to her lines on loop for the duration of this sketch. Also ended up drawing inspiration from her for Scarlet’s physical appearance as well. They’re both evil queens so it fits.

Final sketch paired with my first iteration. Didn’t give her any jewelry this time around but I’ve got some concepts in the works.

Was a lil burnt out from WoF stuff, so I drew some actual fish for once. Browsed through refs on Pinterest and redrew them as cartoons.

Heck yeah!!!! My favorite part has always been how well you’re able to capture the characters, while deepening them beyond the scope of the source material.

And dawww you’re so sweet!! I’m always thrilled to proof-read a new chapter and listen to your ramblings. Perhaps we could celebrate with another round of Portal 2 co-op? Maybe we’ll figure out the advanced levels this time.

To my followers, if you like Portal fics and are looking for your next read, I highly recommend Learned Unhelpfulness. It’s got the Wheat. It’s got the criminally underrated Doug Rattman. It’s got unconventional pairings and dynamics. It delves into the horrors of Aperture Science and piecing together the person you may or may not have been. It’s like Portal 2 1/2 for me. I wanted to do something special, anniversary and all, and I figured since I seem to have so many artists reading, why not an art contest? The rules are simple:

- any scene or image or moment from the current 13 chapters you want to draw, go for it.

- it can be in color or black and white, digital or physical (as long as the picture quality is decent aka I can tell what I’m looking at), there’s NO limit to medium or style or what have you. Shit make it pointillism if you want, who am I to stop you? (I trust you all to be smart cookies and not use AI though)

- MUST be posted to tumblr. I do not have any other social media, and it’s important for the image to have a grabbible url for something later. Mention me in the post or use the tag #lu 1 year contest

- Submissions must be made before March 25th. Winner will be announced March 29th (that Saturday).

The winner will have their work featured in the fic and I’ll link your tumblr in the end authors note (if/when I figure out how, god I’m so old person using technology sometimes). Though I will absolutely reblog everyone’s work because damn you, I know it’s all going to be beautiful.

I’m so extremely nervous about doing this because I know I’m going to disintegrate if I get zero submissions. I will die of embarrassment. You’ll never see me agaaaiinn.

Apologies to my followers, this isn’t my usual output, but I had an idea and needed to indulge it. A fun exercise in drawing people and studying facial features. Alyx especially was hard to get right, so it was super satisfying when I was able to pull off the right look. Something about the nose and mouth I think. For Gordon I tried to find a happy middle between his box art and Source 2 model. Kinda gave up drawing anyone below the shoulder but that’s par for the course here.

@andiirandii’s Singetail! I really liked his patterned red wings, so I wanted to put them on full display. I did take some liberties and added extra swirls to fill out the wing, because the angle I chose made them look a little empty. Also on display: my attempt at drawing talons/hands. @despairofstars ‘s Riff-Raff! Adorable lil goober. His pallets reminds me of sherbet, although I made it a little warmer in tone. I also love their little planet earring <3. This is also the first time (in a long time) that I’ve drawn a SilkWing.

I ended up spending a lot more time on this than I initially expected. While I said these were going to be messier (and they are to a degree), I decided I wanted to invest a bit more effort. As a result, these will probably take longer to complete. Probably one a day.
