10 facts about cookie cutter sharks :D
DYK… (part 3??)
Tumblr media
cookiecutter sharks are named for the way it cuts a wound in whales, dolphins, seals and large fish. It grips the sides of its prey with fierce jaws and gouges out a circular, cookie-shaped piece of flesh.
cookiecutter sharks lose several sets of teeth throughout their lifetimes. this process ensures that they always have sharp, healthy teeth capable of feeding by their preferred strategy. unlike other species, though, cookiecutter sharks apparently purposely swallow the teeth that they lose.
cookiecutter sharks have an elongated, cigar-shaped body with a short, bulbously rounded snout. the large, oval, green eyes are placed forward on the head, enough to allow the shark to have binocular vision.
cookiecutter sharks are slow swimmers. using vertical migration, these sharks will migrate to the surface at night in order to hunt prey. during the day the sharks will return back to the deep ocean in order to escape predators.
In march 2009, maui resident Mike Spalding was bitten by a cookie cutter shark while swimming across Alenuihaha Channel.
cookiecutter sharks are thought to use the bioluminescent photophores on their belly for counterillumination. counterillumination is like camouflage for these sharks: the light they emit blends in well with the slightly lighter water above them, so an animal looking up at them can't see them very well.
cookiecutter sharks are also called cigar sharks!!
The International Union for Conservation of Nature has listed the cookiecutter shark under least concern, as it is widely distributed, has no commercial value, and is not particularly susceptible to fisheries.

𖦹 My two favorite sharks !! 𖦹
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The thresher shark !!! :3
The thresher sharks are known for their super long tails! They use these tails to hunt fish. They whip their long tails and stun their prey before they eat them! They can also leap out of water! And look awesome doing it >_< !! This species is considered harmless and are rather shy! But still make sure to watch out for that tail ^_^ .

The cookie-cutter shark !! >_<
Cookie-cutter sharks are known for the way they eat! They latch onto larger animals and use their razor sharp teeth to take a chunk of its flesh, leaving cookie sized wound. They also eat small animals, like squid, whole. These sharks live deep in tropical waters and go closer to the surface during the night to eat. Cookie-cutter sharks are bioluminescent, so they glow! How cool is that :3 ? These little sharks are known to eat everything! Including submarines!! During the Cold War they tried to eat US submarines and caused many to have to return to the surface! Those mischievous little guys !! >_<

The Sea Creature of the Day is the Cookie Cutter Shark!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
no gif today unfortunately :( when you look into pictures of this beautiful guys, you instead find the circle shaped bitemarks that they're most well known for- but i wanted to take a moment to appreciate these little guys for more than that :3
cookie cutter sharks are fascinating to me, not because of their bites directly but because they pretty much feed on anything in the food chain 🥰 we used to think they just took little bites of larger animals like whales or larger sharks, but it turns out they mostly eat stuff their size such as squids :3 they just have the ability to feed off of larger animals if wanted and i think that's fascinating.
they're also anti-capitalist icons!!! they've been known to damage exposed parts of submarines, in one incident completely blinding U.S. navy submarines and forcing them to go back to repairs, and have been known to damage commercial fishery nets 💜💜💜 wonderful and fascinating lil guys

Time to meet our contestants:
On one side, this bitch looks like a ray, on the other this other bitch is known for chomping on submarines and - well - anything.
Some facts:
Angel shark (genus: Squatina): these sharks spend their days under the sand with only its eyes out, waiting to surprise their prey. They grow up only to around 2,1 meters (7 feet). They're known for getting back problems such as scoliosis due to stress (same dude). Most of them are innofensive to humans but can leave a bite if annoyed.
Cookie Cutter Shark (Isistius brasiliensis): these Sharks are named due to their bite, round and cookie sized, they're parasitic animals that attach themselves to chomp. The underside of their body have bioluminescence, so they glow. Despite the fact that attacks on humans have been knowns, they still aren't a threat to us.

🦈 Daily Shark Fact: 🦈
Cookiecutter Sharks, unlike other sharks that shed teeth one a time, lose all of their teeth in a single shedding. It even swallows the bottom row. All 25 to 31 of them! It is believed that this is to provide calcium to the body. Cookiecutters also have 30 to 37 smaller upper teeth.

YAHHH OK
Cookie cutter sharks are found in tropical waters, they r small little guys going up to 18-20 inches!!! Their underbelly has flutiforce that produces greenish light :3333
Zebra/Leopard sharks normally rest on the seafloor during the day, for they r nocturnal and come out hunting at night. Their favorite foods are mollusks, crustaceans, sea urchins and small fish!
Pyjama sharks are apart of the scyliorhidae family (other wise known as catsharks). The way they kill/stun animals are similar to the death roll of crocodiles!!! These peeps have a unique way of defending themselves, rolling up into a donut shape which makes it harder for predators to consume (also protecting their sensitive eyes and snout) they are also nocturnal!

Finding this website immediately after finishing Our Wives Under the Sea was… an experience.
I am experiencing those inexplicable cosmic feelings. Those “holy shit the world is so cool and terrifying and I don’t know whether I want to explore it or hide from it” feelings. Those “the ocean is so fucking huge I can’t even wrap my mind around it” feelings.
Yk?

(feel free to correct me if any of the below information is false! I'm just one guy! I won't be able to edit these posts, but a correction is always appreciated anyways)
Cookie cutter sharks have a very distinctive bite! They leave perfectly round bites out of various large fish or whatever else they can get their teeth onto! That's how they got their name!
Barreleyes have a transparent face with their eyes on the inside! They have complex eyes and can see So So Much! They can see small zooplankton in the waters above them!
