Drain Cleaning Service
Drain cleaning service implies the home owner or place of business has a problem with a branch line. But not always. A branch line is smaller than the main sewer line. Therefore, if water remains standing in a tub and say, the sink and toilet in that bathroom group does drain, you have a blockage in your tub drain. Therefore, there is a need for a drain cleaning service. However, suppose an in ground swimming pool has a clogged drain. The inside diameter of the pipe used for the drain on this pool could be as large as 8 inches in diameter. Due to the size of this “drain”, we must use knowledge and equipment suited for sewer cleaning service. Drain cleaning service is possible by small waste line cleaning machines. These are also known as branch line machines. Drain cleaning service machines are generally a 3/8″ or a 1/4″ cable being spun in a branch line machine. A drain cleaning service machine is smaller and lighter than a main line machine. However, as previously stated, if a drain line is large enough, a mainline machine may be used. When a drain cleaning service is called, the technician suspects he will be using his small drain cleaning service machine instead of a main line machine. Implied ‘drain cleaning’ service is interpreted by the technician due to the information gathered from a good office staff. The dispatcher will answer the phone and follow up the caller’s statements with some questions, leading to an understanding as to what service is needed. If the dispatcher concludes the caller has only a clogged branch line, then the dispatcher dispatches a technician proficient in understanding the different types of drainage material and systems serviced by a drain cleaning service. More times than not, the dispatcher will hear a very definitive, ” My bathroom sink won’t drain “. That pretty much takes the guess work out of what type of work will be done to restore flow. If the dispatcher concludes the caller has a main line issue, the dispatcher would send a sewer cleaning technician. This is a technician who has a complete understanding of main sewer lines, the system design and the material used in the location the technician will be sent. Occasionally, the caller will state there are simultaneous drain cleaning needs. For instance, the tub and bathroom sink are holding water. However, the toilet in that bathroom does not have trouble flushing. Again, since the problem is on the branch lines, the dispatcher will send a technician proficient at performing a drain cleaning service. The dispatcher understands the need for a drain cleaning service since the toilet, normally connected directly to the main sewer line does flush and the branch lines do not flow. Suppose the call is from a commercial property. For example, a restaurant calls and says they are having trouble with floor drains and sinks not draining. Or, the caller says the sinks are draining. However, when the sinks empty their compartments, the floor drains allow water to rise and spill onto the floor. Sinks and floor drains are normally considered branch lines, so a the call would be logged as a drain cleaning service. Therefor, the dispatcher will send a drain cleaning service technician. However, this is a difficult call for a dispatcher since floor drains can be as large as four inches in large restaurants and generally, sink drains in restaurants are no larger than 2″ in diameter. If the sink drains are branching into a part of the sewer system that is also picking up the floor drains, there may be a blockage in the fitting which conveys flow from both the floor drain to the main sewer line. This would be considered a drain cleaning service. Or, the blockage could be in the main sewer line just after the branch line fitting. This would be a main line service. In this case, the dispatcher will want to send a technician who is skilled and equipped to handle both a main line and drain cleaning service for branch lines. At Anchor Sewer and Drain Cleaning Service, our technicians are skilled and knowledgeable in drain cleaning service and main line sewer issues. Drain cleaning service and removing blockages from main sewer lines are not that different. Size and material are mainly what set the two services apart. As you read from the paragraph above, in a commercial venue, there may be a need for drain cleaning service or main line. That is why most sewer and drain cleaning service companies hire technicians skilled and knowledgeable at both main line and drain cleaning service. One last scenario. Recall the pool situation at the top of this page. If the drain line on a pool is six inches in diameter and the drain line runs 200 feet, the technician responding should not be just a drain cleaning service technician. He should be someone skilled at both sewer and drain cleaning service. Reason being, the size and distance of the run, though it does not drain sewage, will call for drain cleaning service equipment.

Septic Remediation
MAINTENANCE FOR FUNCTIONAL SEPTIC SYSTEMS OR REMEDIATION FOR FAILED OR FAILING SEPTIC SYSTEMS.
Replacing a septic system does not have to be the answer to restoration of a failed or failing system. Without the high cost and destructive process of excavating, Anchor Sewer and Drain Cleaning has the means of saving your septic system. This is accomplished by installing one of the various types of Pirana Aerobic Bacterial Generators from Pirana, LLC. Traditionally, septic systems store waste water in a tank (septic tank) where ‘anaerobic’ bacteria slowly digest the solid waste. Because traditional septic systems are powered by anaerobic bacteria, traditional septic systems will fail, given enough time. In some cases, it is 30 – 50 years. In others, less than 15 years before an anaerobic septic system fails. Currently, the national average for the life span of a septic system is 20 years. What causes septic system failure is the same action by which they are intended to work. Anaerobic bacterial action…. Anaerobic bacteria takes a much longer time period to digest waste. The waste is broken down and will find its way to the leach field where it must be consumed by more anaerobic action. This is where the failing system originates. Anaerobic bacteria produces a slime which protects the bacteria. However, this also makes the process of disposing effluent into the earth very difficult, until your leach field becomes very sluggish. One other negative bi-product is “Bio-mat” (biological material). The bio-mat fills the soil, inhibiting the soil from absorbing effluent sent from the septic tank.
By installing a Pirana Bacteria Generation System, restoration of a failed or failing septic system begins with “aerobic bacteria” (bacteria requiring oxygen). Aerobic bacteria will colonize in the aerated environment we create in the septic tank. Now, the aerobic bacteria consumes the waste in the tank and continues in the effluent in the drain field. In the drain field, or leach field, the aerobic bacteria will feed off of the bio-mat, restoring absorption. There are similar systems available for installation. However, a Pirana brand aerobic bacterial generator uses a special blend of facultative anaerobe. Essentially, a micro-organism that has the ability to switch between the oxygenated state and an oxygen depleted environment. When oxygen is available, the anaerobe will strip the oxygen molecule (like taking a breath) and go back to work. In order to produce aerobic bacteria, it must have oxygen and a food source. The food source is easy enough to comprehend in origin. However, oxygen must be supplied. This is really the bulk of the work in converting from ‘anaerobic’ to aerobic. We must pump air in and diffuse the air to provide a supporting, oxygen saturation content for the aerobic bacteria. By installing an air line, diffuser created by Pirana and an air pump, Pirana systems have the ability to sustain and colonize the tank with aerobic bacteria. Aside from facultative bacteria coming from waste, The Pirana unit is packaged with a supply of bacteria to jump start the system. Pirana systems provide several benefits:
§ Alkali concentrations of gas are eliminated. This action saves the concrete components of your system from corrosion.
§ No more slimy bio-mat clogging up porous soil.
§ No more foul odors
§ Faster leaching action in the drain field leaves the yard solid and not spongy.
§ Greatly reduce the presence of harmful bacteria, such as E-Coli in the vegetation of your lawn.
§ Prevents septic systems from becoming frozen in the winter.
The Pirana system leaves nothing to chance. About 5% of clients who have purchased this system have not been able to restore their leach field. We work with you to provide success. If your septic system does not respond, we offer a full money back guarantee on the cost of the Pirana unit. (labor to install is not covered). However, we do require that you work with us, follow our instructions without fail and allow The Pirana System to work without counter action. Once we determine the probability The Pirana System is a good fit for your septic system, we will take a deposit and schedule an installation. Within 6 – 12 hours, the conversion will be completed. You may notice a foul odor in the air as anaerobic bacteria is being offset by aerobic bacteria. After the 6-12 hour period, that odor will go away. Once the odor has gone, the indication is the aerobic environment has been accomplished. Within 30 days, the clarity of the effluent in the tank will be dramatic. Note the photos below.
It may have taken 20 years for the septic system to fail. In most cases, the restoration of the leach field is not over night. However, be assured, if you can see changes in the tank within a 30 day period, you have an indication of what is taking place in the leach field. Restoration! Remember, particulate biological matter will traverse to the leach field in the same manner an anaerobic system sends bio-logical matter to the leach field. But, so will the facultative anaerobes. The digestive system will continue in the leach field. And, you have the benefit of restoring the leaching ability of the soil.
The above drawing illustrates how Pirana distributes warm air into the septic system. For many homes throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island, frozen septic systems occurred due to an unusual, but growing trend to have the leach field and inlet line swallowed up in a developing frost line. The normal depth of a frost line in New England is 3 feet. During 2015, Massachusetts and Rhode Island have had frost as deep as 5 feet. If you are reading this, and have a failed leach field or a failed septic system, be assured, there is no need to spend tens of thousands of dollars to have your failed leach field and failed septic system working entirely as they are expected. All systems will respond immediately. Reversing the failed leach field can take a very short time, as in the case of the system these photos were taken from. Or, the leach field may not recover for up to a year. However, we can guarantee arrested development as the system recovers will begin immediately. The State of Massachusetts acknowledges this on the Mass.gov Department of Environmental Protection approved methods of remediation. Search “SepTech/Pirana System [formerly AquaworxRemediator] The Pirana technology is being used in 48 states and 14 countries.

Sewer Cleaning Service
Sewer cleaning service arrived as a necessity in the evolution of plumbing systems. 1935 is the approximate era of bell and spigot gasket type sewer systems. In the manner this pipe is assembled to carry sewage, a bell and spigot gasket piped sewer eventually lead to an effective means of clearing blockages. “Sewer Cleaning” was not a term used in the English language. In fact, the popular terminology was, “Rooting”. Consider, for a moment, how the word “Rooting” fits into the sewer cleaning industry. We hear the term applied in some tense when we call a sewer cleaning service. Adding a hint, the words, “Rooter Man”, “Mr. Rooter”, “Roto Rooter”, …etc. all being company titles, originate from the act of “rooting” a sewer line. As gasket piping became the preferred method of constructing a sewer system, the moniker, “Rooter Man” became a household term. Reason being, gaskets in the piping eventually rotted or leaked. As the nutrient rich waste water seeped into the earth, vegetation found its way into the sewer system. The result, root intrusion. Roots had to be removed from the sewer line. Sewer cleaning services involving the removal of sewer blockages caused by root intrusion began to spring up. The sewer service would be summonsed. When the sewer cleaning service arrived, a knock on the door would be followed by an announcement. “Rooter Man”!
Rooter man became the popular terminology of the day for this sewer cleaning service. Reason being, roots grew into the sewer, the sewer service called the method of freeing the sewer from root intrusion, “Rooting” or “Rodding”. Rooting and Rodding was done by pushing a long, flat, barbed ended rod into the cleanout of the sewer. The hope was to push the barbed end into the blockage, twist and yank as much of the root intrusion out of the sewer as the sewer cleaning service could. Flow was restored. However, once root intrusion had occurred, the process had to be repeated over intervals of a few months. A sewer cleaning technician by the name of Sam Blanc practiced maintenance of his own sewer. Sam thought, there must be a better way as he worked from his basement. The idea came while observing the oscillating action of his wife’s ringer cloths washing machine. Commandeering the motor from the washing machine, fabricating a woven steel basket and using a coil of sprung steel, Sam Blanc invented the worlds first rotational rooting machine. The technique in rooting with the flat, barbed end bar was to stab and twist. Sam considered this action with the idea of a cutting blade. But, not just stabbing and twisting. Advancing the cable, sweeping the outside wall and cutting. Sam Blanc set out with the family car and a trailer in tow. On the trailer, “The Roto Rooter”. Seemingly, overnight, The Roto Rooter sewer cleaning machine was being seen in the use of eliminating root intrusion across the country. Demand for supply gave birth to machine shops under the name, Roto Rooter. The purchase of the “Roto Rooter” machine and the accessories became the purchase of a Roto Rooter franchise. Today, the offenders of sewer blockage vary. The industry still sees plenty of pipe suffering from root intrusion. However, inappropriate use of the sewer is a larger culprit. “Flushable wipes” are considered “flushable” due to the fact they generally make it out of the toilet when the trip lever is depressed. However, they do tend to accumulate in the sewer line. Grease is also large on the offending agent list. Hardened and soft accumulations of grease are difficult to clear from the sewer line. Therefore, the sewer and drain cleaning industry implements fine, high pressure jets of water to erode and flush the sewer of grease blockages. Anchor Sewer and Drain Cleaning has all of the services available for clearing sewer blockages in homes and the place of business. Sewer size should not be more than 5″ in diameter when contacting Anchor Sewer and Drain Service to restore flow to your sewer line.

SEWER JETTING
Sewer jetting or hydro scrubbing is quickly becoming the most popular means of clearing clogged or blocked sewer and drain lines. This method of sewer cleaning is so effective, you will have to view the video by Super Jet Hydrojetting under this link in order to fully understand why hydro scrubbing is becoming the new standard for cleaning a clogged sewer line. As it has been stated, “A picture is worth a thousand words”. (Linked to Super Jet Hydro Jetting YouTube channel).
Anchor Sewer and Drain Cleaning uses sewer jetting on residential and commercial sewer lines for various reasons.
The number one reason to use sewer jetting technology is when your sewer line has an accumulation of grease or sludge. Grease and sludge accumulate in sewer lines due to off-sets, root intrusion or back pitched pipe. The sewer pipe should always flow down hill, away from the house or building. The most effective method of ridding the line of sludge or grease accumulation is to flush it with the highly effective force, sewer jetting offers.
A Video Illustrating the Jetting Nozzle’s Jets Descaling the Pipe Walls.
Sewer lines made of cast iron build scale of iron oxide. This scale holds debris and actually slows the waste in the sewer line, creating the need for more water to be flushed threw the sewer. However, because you do not know when the waste is flushed out of the line, you are not aware a blockage is being built in the sewer due to iron oxide deposits and imperfect making of the joints in the pipe. Again, these conditions promote sludge and grease accumulation which respond most effectively from the high pressure jets of a water jetting nozzle in the sewer line.
Other sewer construction is made from clay gasket type systems. What occurs with this type of material is shifting and offsetting. The gaskets deteriorate over years of being under siege by water and bacteria. When the gaskets are gone, the clay pipe shifts under the weight of the earth and the erosion created with water leaking from the pipe. The pipe comes unaligned, creating an off-set or a sag in the pipe.
We in the plumbing industry commonly refer to this effect as a “belly”. This is the same condition as having a back pitched pipe. Again, accumulations need to be flushed out under the force of sewer jetting. Depending on the severity of this condition (having a belly in the line) the sewer may be manageable. Anchor sewer and drain can show you how to maintain your sewer with this condition. However, it is necessary to have a sewer jetting service performed before a sewer maintenance program can be considered.
Off-sets in the pipe can cause the sewage to build at the edge of the pipe. Bellies create ponding in the sewer line, where sewage collects and can not be flushed out by the natural flow of the sewer being used.
All of these systems and conditions are reason to have your sewer line flushed and scoured under the pressure and effectiveness of Sewer Jetting.

Garbage Disposal Part - III
DIAGNOSE A GARBAGE DISPOSAL
Garbage disposers are among the worst offenders when having kitchen sink back ups. This is usually the result of an object, inadvertently being washed into the sink drain and impeding the grinding chamber. (NOTE: Garbage disposers are intended as a companion to the dishwasher. Therefore, garbage disposals are to be used for disposal of small food particles and biodegradable organic matter that arrives in the sink while rinsing dishes.) In the event the garbage disposal is jammed due to a foreign object falling into the grinding chamber, without notice, the disposer’s circuitry will overload and cut out power before the garbage disposer will overheat and self destruct. If your disposal does not make a sound when turned on, the internal circuit breaker has tripped. Do not attempt to reset this until you have determined why the circuit has been interrupted. Resolve the cause first. Though the circuit breaker is tripped, be sure the switch supplying power is in the off position. You may even want to disconnect power from the main circuit panel as an extra safety precaution.
Here are the steps to trouble shooting the garbage disposer:
1.            Before looking into the disposer, be sure power is disengaged and there is no way anyone will inadvertently supply power to the garbage disposal while you are working on it.
2.            Use a flashlight and peer into the grinding chamber of the disposer.
3.            If you see an object that would obstruct the ability for the grinding chamber to move, look for a 1/4″ allen wrench. Most garbage disposals come with a 1/4″ allen wrench.
4.            Beneath the garbage disposer, in the center, you will see a hexagonal hole. This is where you will use the 1/4″ allen wrench. Turn the kitchen sink faucet on, if the sink still drains. Insert the allen wrench in the hexagonal hole beneath the disposer. Begin working the wrench clockwise and counter clockwise. This should help work the obstruction loose. When the chamber feels it is moving more freely than when you first started working with the wrench, turn the faucet off. Reach into the disposer (all power off) and remove the obstruction.
5.            Back to the bottom of the disposer, find a button. This is the internal circuit breaker for the garbage disposal. Push it. Resupply current to the garbage disposer switch if you turned it off at the breaker panel. Turn the water on, then the switch. The garbage disposer should work if it has not burned itself out. If there is still debris left in the grinding chamber, you will need to repeat these steps.
Avoid using a plunger. Only plunge the disposer as a last option. Plunging could force the seals in the disposer out of place and create leaks.
Diagnosing and fixing the drainage problem for a sink, shower or tube may be a long and difficult process. Be safe. If fixing the issue is something that is risky or not being understood, contact a drain service company. The range of pricing for a company who cares to do the job correctly is within $145.00 – $225.00. This depends on material used in piping, age of the house which would help the plumber understand the plumbing code that was used in assembling the plumbing system, access to the plumbing and what is assumed to be creating the blockage.
Adding a garbage disposal unit to an old drain line, composed of cast iron or galvanized pipe is not recommended. This can be done. However, the piping material will develop pitting inside the pipe. This will provide a place for food particles to lodge. Then, more particles are added. You may not see a problem for quite a while. However, where the food particles are building, bio-mat is also building in the line. Here, you now have the problem of carbon material and moisture stuck in place. Using the idea of having a protein stain on an article of clothing being laundered; you would use a protein detergent to remove the stain. The same principle applies here, carbon material such as decaying food, lies against the pipe, which is also a carbon material. This aides in weakening the walls of the pipe.

Garbage Disposal Part - II
MAIN LINE SEWER TRAPS
The Old Method of Trapping Sewer Gas.
In areas of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, sewer blockages and clogged drains are often the result of having a main line trap. Main line sewer traps were originally installed with a few purposes in mind. One reason to install a trap on the sewer line was to literally trap debris or objects accidentally finding their way into the sewer line. Intended to be easy, trap cleanouts were installed with the idea of a home owner being able to remove the obstruction by removing clean out plugs and physically removing the items in the trap. The vision was lost somewhere in history and main line sewer traps have shown up in places where they are difficult to service from day one of their installation.
Throughout Rhode Island, a drain cleaning technician will encounter difficulty with main line traps being buried in such cities as Pawtucket, Cranston, Providence and Woonsocket. The locations around South Eastern Massachusetts where a sewer trap may or may not be installed are not consistent. For Example, throughout New Bedford, the drain cleaning technician may find a street where a few houses have traps and others do not have main line sewer traps.
In the drawing above, you can see the trap as a ‘u’ shape in the sewer line. It has two caps pointing to the sky. Here in the drawing, the capped ends are labeled as “clean outs”. This is where the Sewer Cleaning Technician will first attempt to clear a blockage from since sewer backups often occur here at the trap or “house trap”. However, if the trap cleanouts are not accessible, then removing the cleanout plug from the downstream side is not an option. In some cases, the trap is unearthed by excavation and clearing the line of a blockage is much more expensive than if the trap were accessible to the technician. The trap is no longer necessary. If the trap has to be excavated to service it, do not allow it to remain in the line. Replace it with a strait piece of pipe. Or, if your home or place of business is in Rhode Island, the plumbing code in Rhode Island requires the trap be replaced with a back water valve. Back water valves are a great idea, anyway. Ask anyone who has had sewage from the main city sewer, back into their home. Not just sewer water from your house. So, you can’t control it. You will get sewage from upstream of your house with out a back water valve if the city main backs up!
Reasons for drain cleaning difficulty
•             the trap itself inhibits the ability of the sewer and drain cleaning technician from getting the sewer cleaning cable across the trap. So, the outlet side of the trap must be opened.
•             the trap may not have been opened in decades. For the sewer and drain cleaning tech., this often means cutting the cap out or using a chisel to pry it out.
•             the trap is often buried in the ground, making the task of opening the trap impossible for sewer and drain cleaning technicians. This would then mean the technician will have to play a game of skill against the trap to manipulate a cable or a jet hose through the trap to clear the clogged sewer line.
More purpose was given to main line sewer traps. Traps were installed in mainline residential sewers to prevent sewer gas and rodents from entering the house and allow the home owner an opportunity to prevent sewer blockage by trapping foreign objects that are not flushable. However, if the trap is not serviceable, and buried in the earth, one of the advantages to having a trap is gone.
House traps are also irrelevant due to the fact once the piping on the house side of the trap becomes soiled, noxious and dangerous gases still infiltrate the home. So, the practice of installing a trap at every fixture in the house was implemented.
Having a house trap in the mainline and a trap at a fixture is what is known by plumbers and drain cleaners as double trapping. The international plumbing code forbids double trapping. Double trapping in itself can inhibit the flow of sewage and promote sewer and drain back-ups. So, it is worth having the main line trap removed in order to avoid inconvenience and costly sewer clogs.
House traps are very common in Pawtucket, Rhode Island; Cranston, Rhode Island; Providence and Woonsocket. However, they are spotty and often unpredictable as to where the sewer and drain cleaning professionals will find them with in the cities of Massachusetts.
Diagnosing and fixing the drainage problem for a sink, shower or bathtub may be a long and difficult process. Be safe. If fixing the issue is something that is risky or not being understood, contact a drain service company. The range of pricing for a company who cares to do the job correctly is within $145.00 – $225.00. Main sewer line cleaning service can cost $245-$365. This depends on material used in piping, age of the house which would help the plumber understand the plumbing code that was used in assembling the plumbing system, access to the plumbing and what is assumed to be creating the blockage.

GARBAGE DISPOSAL NOT WORKING
Garbage disposers can often be the culprit behind a clogged kitchen sink. This usually occurs when an object has been deliberately or accidentally thrown into the garbage disposer and the garbage disposer will not grind the object. The disposer will become jammed or clogged. Either way, the object is impeding the ability to use the sink drain. We have provided step -by- step instruction on how to determine if your garbage disposer is causing your kitchen sink to become backed up.
Before performing the steps in diagnosing your garbage disposal, please acknowledge all safety precautions. Disconnect power in as many places as you can!
Normally, before a disposer will burn itself out when jammed, the internal circuit breaker, or Ground Fault Circuit interrupter will trip, discontinuing power to the disposer. Before pressing the reset button, you should take steps to determine what caused the interruption in current.
1.            Disconnect other power sources, to be sure there is no way the power will engage and cause electrical shock, or accidental activation of the disposer, should you clear the blockage.
2.            After the power is disconnected, use a flashlight and peer into the mouth of the garbage disposal. If you can not get your hand inside the mouth of the garbage disposal, use an object that will allow you to detect an obstruction in the grinding chamber. If you can, remove the object.
3.            The center shaft has a 1/4″ allan wrench slot beneath the garbage disposal unit. Use a 1/4″ allan wrench and work the shaft to turn the grinding wheel counter clockwise and clockwise to dislodge anything that may be stuck in the disposer.
4.            If you have the ability to run water without it backing up, turn the water on to help loosen the grinding wheel and flush out the debris as you use the 1/4″ allan wrench.
5.            Once you have determined the garbage disposer is no longer jammed, restore power and press the reset button located beneath the disposal.
6.            Activate the garbage disposal and run water. If the disposer makes no unusual sounds, spins freely and does not trip the circuit, congratulations. You have cleared the jammed disposer.
7.            If the disposer is working but the sink does not drain, you will need to cable the kitchen sink drain line.

Clogged Sink Drain In Cold Weather
logged drain lines occur due to freezing. If there is moisture, and the temperature is freezing or below, you can develop a frozen drain or vent.
You are washing dishes and pull the plug to allow the water in the sink to drain. Suddenly, the drain stops. You try drain opening chemicals. You plunge the sink in a manner that looks as if you entered a cow milking contest. You attempt to use a drain auger (cable or snake). Nothing is working.
You will notice one of two conditions. You cable so far, and your cable seems to have hit a brick wall. Or, you cable until you have no cable left and have not encountered any resistance and still no drainage. Seems impossible, right? You won’t know the reality until it has happened to you. Aside from having grease buildup or food blocking the drain line, frozen drain piping may be the reason your sink will not drain. In the illustration above, freezing occurs two ways.
1.            A sink on an outside wall will slowly accumulate ice as water flows and disperses. Water runs in and settles at a point where the temperature inside the wall is freezing or below. Each time the fixture must use the drain, another layer of ice builds on top of what was previously formed.
If you have a garbage disposer (garbage disposal), you will actually accelerate the process of creating a blockage. What you are doing when using your disposal during freezing conditions is not just adding water to the drain as it is building the restricting layers of ice. But, you are adding density. Build up occurs faster. So, in freezing weather, avoid using the garbage disposer.
2.            In addition to the description above, another way for blockage to occur is by restricting air flow. Frost accumulates in the plumbing vent.
Vapor from sewer gas or steam from hot water rises and settles against the interior of the vent pipe. Given enough time, the vent becomes restricted with a buildup of frost, formed by vapors and or steam.
How to thaw your frozen drain. First, be sure the vent is not the problem. If you are cabling your sink drain and encounter no resistance, know your vent is within 6 ft. – 8 ft. from the trap and you have put 10 ft. to 15 ft. of cable in the drain line, you may have restriction in the vent. Go up on the roof and look down the pipe that is smallest and comes through the roof, closest to your sink location. If you see frost, in the pipe, run water from the garden hose down the vent. If the vent overflows, push the hose down the vent pipe as far as it will go. Chances are, you are now getting the warmer water directly onto the spot where the vent pipe is restricted with frost. When the water begins to drain, congratulations, you have now restored the vent and may now have a functional sink drain, providing you do not also have a frozen drain in the wall.
If your drain arm in the wall has frozen, allow heat to the cabinet where the pipe disappears into the wall. Now, you are going to have to go through a long process of running scalding hot water until the sink backs up, vacuum the water completely out of the sink and the drain line. Repeat the process. Eventually, the ice will melt and you will have to minimize the use of that sink until the weather returns to normally expected temperature. I did this recently and it took over two hours to restore flow to the drain.
Sewer cleaning service may be $245-$365. This depends on material used in piping, age of the house which would help the plumber understand the plumbing code that was used in assembling the plumbing system, access to the plumbing and what is assumed to be creating the blockage. Another consideration in pricing is what method is being used to clear a blockage. What machinery?

SEWER VENTILATION
The Roll of the Sewer Vent
Sewer vents are a hit and miss problem among plumbers and drain cleaning services. For one, a pipe occluded with root intrusion or build up is a pipe with no vent line. This pipe may not be completely filled side-t0-side and top – to – bottom. However, the usual volume of water will fill the void and thus cut off the flow of air. So, even if the pipe occlusion is in the drain arm, the ventilation will be a problem. Therefore, the problem does not necessarily get solved through the roof vent. This is, of course due to the “drain arm” or the drain line being clogged (occluded, meaning, there is no vent line above the water).
Diagnosing a plumbing vent often involves additional steps, because, plumbing vents are located on the roof of a home or building, more often than not.
Animals, such as birds and squirrels will make their nest in a sewer vent, penetrating the roof. Sewer vents are appealing as shelter due to heat which will rise through the sewer vent and almost come forcefully as heat rises in a cold environment.
Covering roof vents only makes the roof vent more appealing to the animal, now, due to the fact it is now acting as a shelter with heat. So, what can we do? Do we roll the dice and accept the possibility of an animal finding its’ way to the roof vent, choking off air flow to the sewer with a nest?
Fortunately, plumbing technology has evolved with consideration to the world around us. Mechanical vents, such as “E-Cap” will cover the roof vent and double as a vent cover animals are unable to dwell in.

Sewer Snake Sizing
Sewer cleaning machines are made in different sizes to suit the job. If you were in need of a sewer cleaning cable, or a roto rooting machine, which cable or sewer cleaning machine would you purchase?
One of the two big box stores carries a line of Rigid brand, sewer cleaning products. The largest sewer cleaning machine kept in stock is the Rigid K-400. This machine comes with a 3/8″ hollow core sewer cleaning cable. Would you feel comfortable using the 3/8″ cable in a main line sewer cleaning project? You shouldn’t. There are articles on line, granting testimony to the effectiveness of a 3/8″ sewer cleaning cable from Rigid. O.k.? That person got away with using the 3/8″ cable on his 3″ diameter sewer line to clear root intrusion. Chances of winning a bet that this man is still fighting a battle with root intrusion are very high.
The 3/8″ sewer cleaning cable is primarily a branch line or a drain cleaning snake. It is best used on 2″ diameter drain lines. However, if you have a blockage of known cause, preferably a paper blockage or a soft blockage of a sort, you may fare well using a 3/8″ drain snake on a sewer line no larger in diameter than 3″. Professional sewer and drain cleaning service technicians would more than likely steer clear.
HOW TO SIZE THE SEWER CLEANING CABLE
How to Size the Sewer Cleaning Cable
Obviously a small cable is for a small sewer line. You would not use a 1/4″ drain cleaning cable on a 3″ or 4″ sewer line. That much should be easy to see. However, what size sewer cleaning cable would you use on a 3″ sewer line or greater if there were roots or hardened grease in the sewer line?
Look at the selection of sewer and drain cleaning cables. The smallest is 1/4″. Then the 5/16″ drain snake”. Next in size is 3/8″ drain snake. Then a 1/2″ sewer cleaning cable. 9/16″ and 11/16″ sewer cleaning cables are the largest sewer cleaning cables you may find in a big box store. Not likely, to find the largest sewer cleaning cables in a big box store. But, that is a personal observation.
Let’s group the sewer cleaning cable size into small, medium, large and x-large.
•             The 1/4″ drain snake would be small.
•             The 5/16″ and 3/8″ drain snakes would be medium.
•             The 1/2″ sewer cleaning cable would be large.
•             The 9/16″ and larger sewer cleaning cables would be x-large.
The 1 1/4″ and 1 1/2″ drain lines are small. So, use a small drain cleaning snake (refer to the list just above). Preferably, the smaller the drain, the smaller the cable.
THE 2″ DRAIN LINE WOULD BE CONSIDERED MEDIUM. THEREFORE, USE A MEDIUM DRAIN SNAKE.
THE 3″ SEWER LINE IS LARGE. USE A LARGE SEWER CLEANING CABLE.
THE 4″ AND 5″ SEWER LINES ARE X-LARGE FOR A RESIDENTS OR A SMALL BUSINESS BUILDING. USE AN X-LARGE SEWER CLEANING CABLE.
WHY?
When a cable encounters a blockage, the drain cleaning cable or sewer cleaning cable begins to flex. If the cable does not have a great enough tensile strength, and there is enough space inside the pipe, the drain cleaning or sewer cleaning cable can flex to the point it bends and wraps around itself. That means you have a knotted cable and you may not be able to retrieve the cable with out cutting the pipe. In the worst case scenario, you may be paying for an excavation. Very expensive! The fella who cleared is sewer line (undoubtedly 3″ or better) of roots got lucky. Don’t take chances. Professional sewer cleaning services have the right equipment. If you feel you may use the equipment repeatedly, purchase it. You will save money in the long run. However, if you feel your situation is rare and you will not have repeat occurrences, call a sewer and drain cleaning service.
This depends on material used in piping, age of the house which would help the plumber understand the plumbing code that was used in assembling the plumbing system, access to the plumbing and what is assumed to be creating the blockage.

Drain Cleaning Service Implies

Sewer Jetting Or Hydro Scrubbing

“Outstanding experience! James and his assistant arrived exactly at the time he said they would. They were both very respectful and courteous to myself and my property, and even coordinated with the city’s sewer department in order to get my sewer line cleared. The work performed along with the problem were clearly explained to me, and was completed at a very fair price (which was less than half of what Rooterman quoted). I couldn’t be happier with the service provided and would call them again without hesitation.” – Michael Fitzgerald
“James took my call on a Sunday evening when technically, his business wasn’t even open. I had a frozen outdoor drain that could have potentially caused my basement to flood due to all the snow melting. He showed up on time the next day and proceeded to approach the problem from a few different angles. He explained what he was doing along the way and kept me posted through the process. I should also mentioned that he traveled outside of his service area to help me out.” – Clara Mederiros
