Musician, writer, artist, gardener, Jane-of-all-trades. I keep astonishingly busy with a wide variety of things, when I'm not napping for three hours a day due to chronic illness. Still fixated on Mass Effect. Wrote A Star to Steer Her By, writing Sunset and Evening Star.

Lines of thought that seem Normal but are actually rooted in extreme puritanism:
-Seeing the nude human body is inherently traumatic -Sex scenes in art are pointless -Wearing kink-related clothing in public is the similar to performing a sex scene in front of unwilling participants -Depicting female characters expressing sexuality is always degrading -People's sexual fantasies are always an endorsement of the behavior they want to see in real life -Sex work is more traumatic and coercive than other types of work The goal is to treat sex as just another thing people do. That is a much healthier attitude than hiding it! It's not uniquely traumatic, it's not weird to talk about it or include it in society.

Rhi Shepard's entirely overblown-but-technically true scar story was based off the one my boyfriend in highschool told about the bayonette slash scar across his chest!*
But real talk, here: character development around scars can be so much more than just tragic backstory. It can be an opening to learning about their hobbies, or where and how they grew up. It can reveal their insecurities or lack thereof, and how they handle them!
If you only asked me about my scars, you might learn that I'm a road cyclist, hace had a shit ton of major orthopedic surgery (not a tragic backstory, still formative), that i play violin, and that I'm a klutz. And that's if I'm being honest, and you're not instead learning that I'm a lying goofball! The possibilities! And that's just one person's 'boring' scars.
But really, you should occasionally give characters scars because some people have scars. Just like some characters should be gay or trans or black; because people have variety, and there doesn't need to be a reason.
*don't leave plastic army guys on the slip'n'slide
"we should give characters scars that have really boring origins instead of having to do with a tragic backstory" okay but that's how scars work in real life. In fiction when you put something there it's usually because it has some sort of significance. Character design can be a means of storytelling especially when it comes to prominent scars, if the curtains weren't blue for a reason they wouldn't be brought up in the first place
#writing advice#scars#obviously you can also have fun with tragic backstory#but if its every time its your Tragic Backstory Tell#like pink hair in an anime

Jew here with a friendly reminder that:
Criticizing Isreal ≠ antisemetic
Supporting Palestine ≠ antisemitic
Believing in the Free Palestine cause ≠ antisemitic
BUT ALSO
A random ass Jew just living their life oceans away has nothing to do with the Isreal-Palestine conflict
Palestinian Jews exist
Jews that support Palestine exist (I am one of them)
Calling out ACTUAL antisemitism ≠ supporting Isreal
#truth#jews around the world are NOT the state currently conducting a genocide#can't help but think how convenient it is for Certain People#to have two groups they hate at odds with each other#(whether they actually are or not)

so much of the french revolution is just various people going "surely committing THIS act of violence/murder will end all the suffering and bloodshed and usher in peace!" followed by a summary of how everything immediately escalated and got even worse afterward. and somehow this website's takeaway is "clearly acts of violence and murder are the only way to end suffering and usher in peace!"
I don't know guys I think we might actually have to actually put in effort and not conflate working toward a better society with seeking personal catharsis.
