Ficlet prompt...Shiro moving in with Allura post Home-Reno Hero and realising that some of the renovation work is just shoddy.

“What? No, I’m sure it’s fine.”

“It’s not.” He pulled out of her arms and headed out of the bedroom. “Where’s my level?”

She groaned and pursued him. “How should I know?” She’d planned a very special housewarming for Shiro since he was moving in with her, and while he had initially seemed very appreciative of the lacy pink teddy she was wearing, something else had caught his eye.

He jogged down the stairs to the front entry, where he’d dropped his suitcases. “I swear that baseboard isn’t level, and I want to know if they fucked up the woodwork or if there’s a problem with the floor.”

“There’s nothing wrong with the baseboard or the flooring…”

“Not the flooring,” he said, unzipping one of his suitcases and rummaging through it, “the floor. If it’s dropping, that means they didn’t reinforce properly, and the whole floor could give way.”

Okay, that made her pause. “I wouldn’t have thought you’d let them get away with that.”

“Hey, I can only be in so many places at once. It’s also possible the engineer made a mistake… though if they did, I’m never working with them again. Ah HA!” He pulled out his tool belt and started buckling it on as he pushed past her on the stairs, heading back up. 

She ought to be miffed that her boyfriend would rather play with tools than with her, but she was concerned now. She turned and followed him again. “Have you worked with them often? If they made the mistake, will you have to go back and re-evaluate other homes you did with them?”

“Most likely,” he agreed. “Honestly, I don’t have any reason to think it was them. Or that your floor is starting to give way, but better safe than sorry.”

When he got back to the bedroom, she watched him crouch down with his level and tape measure. She might have appreciated the view of his backside more if she wasn’t half-afraid she was going to fall through the floor any second now.

After a few minutes of watching the little bubble and taking some small measurements, he stood back up. “It’s just the baseboard. They just weren’t as careful with installing it as they should have been.”

She breathed out her anxiety and let relief fill its place. “Good. Now then…”

He put his tools back in their spots on his belt. “I’ll have to rip out that whole wall to get it done properly, but it won’t take long, and…”

She walked around to stand between him and the wall. “Shiro…”

“‘Scuse me, honey,” he said, stepping to one side to continue his evaluation. “The paint will be a problem though, unless we get a thicker baseboard in which case I’d have to redo the whole room, but paint’s cheaper than…”

She stepped back in front of him and grabbed his face with both hands, hauling his gaze back up to hers. “You can play with the house tomorrow,” she insisted. “You have other things to see to tonight.”

He blinked. “Is something else wrong? What is it?”

She hauled him in and kissed him hard. It took him a second but then his arms wrapped around her again. 

“Oh,” he said, when she let him.

“Got it now, hero?” she teased.

“I… think so, but just in case, give me a reminder.” 

She laughed. “I’m going to have to work hard to keep you distracted from fixing every tiny little detail of this place, aren’t I?” She let her hands slide down to his tool belt to start unbuckling it again.

“Well… not that hard,” he murmured. He kissed her again as his tool belt hit the floor with a thud.
