2018 MEMORY 5 of 5: The Year the Christmas Tree Stayed Up Alli and I have lovingly referred to 2018 as “The Year the Christmas Tree Stayed Up” because the small tree that adorns our photography office at home never came down the whole year long. During the Advent season, we light candles of joy, hope, love, and peace to celebrate the season. The tree that was up in the office reminded me of the joy, hope, love, and peace that my life was filled with in 2018. In November of 2017 when I got laid off, I took it easy through the holidays, confident that I would be able to find work once the new year rang in. Unfortunately, the best laid plans are never really that and we went for a full 12 months before I started my new job at Graceland. Despite that, 2018 was filled with the joy of accomplishing goals and visiting new places. It was filled with the hope that everything truly does happen for a reason. It was filled with the love of my family and friends who supported me with texts, calls and good vibes. And it was filled with an amazing peace of mind that we would be taken care of, even though the evidence seemed to suggest otherwise. 2018 brought Alli and I closer than ever before and we will always look back fondly on The Year The Christmas Tree Stayed Up. Tomorrow, we plan to take down the tree. 2019 is a brand new year and I can’t wait to see what it brings. Whenever we can, we go to see @seamlessdancetheatre’s winter show at @unionstationkc’s City Stage. As has been the case the last few years, Seamless teams up with @kcaa.performancecompany for some really beautiful performances. It was fun to take my family tonight to enjoy this annual outing. I got this canvas jacket for our trip to Greece. It might be my favorite item I’ve ever purchased at Old Navy and I’m guessing that today might be my last opportunity to wear it for a while with this blizzard that is allegedly on its way into town. I truly never thought I would be someone who has multiple jackets of differing warmths. First day on the new job on Monday, followed by my first day on the Lamoni campus yesterday. As @alliarnoldart and I walked onto the @gracelanduniversity campus, I was invigorated, not just by the weather, but by this exciting opportunity to give back to the place that has given me so much joy and is the source of so many good memories from my life. I spent the day meeting with people throughout the University who share that commitment to making this institution the best place it can be. This is us with Andy. Andy is back in the States for 12 days and for two of those he was stuck in the Newark airport because of #WinterStormAvery. We met him in line when we were both trying to get new flights to get home when ours were cancelled. With no luck finding a reliable flight, we decided to drive and invited Andy, who was on yet another standby flight, to come with us. About 11 hours after we left Newark, we delivered him to his home in Kentucky where he was able to hold his one-year-old baby girl for the first time. Andy’s been deployed, protecting people and representing America in scary places. We got to know him on our way across the chilly Northeast and Mideast landscape today. He shared his stories with us and we shared ours with him. He showed us pictures from his service in the Army (deployed overseas until the end of next year) and pictures of his child. Our paths crossed for a reason today and I am so glad they did. The opportunity to drive across the country with my wife and this remarkable young soldier is not something I will soon forget. We didn’t make it all the way to KC though. Crashed out in Indiana for the night. Home tomorrow. After 3+ days of travel: delays, runway holds, cancellations, one-way car rentals, and more. We saw this man sitting in the main square of Pyrgos yesterday. He just looked so perfectly content. This last several days in Greece have been wonderful. Exploring the history Acropolis and the neighborhoods of Athens, the lazy, laid-back fishing village of Nafplio, the white and blue architecture of Santorini — it made this trip so memorable and meaningful, as travel often does for me. The memories we will keep with us of the people we met along the way are imprinted for a long time. Thank you, Greece. We hiked about 7.5 miles today from Thíra to Oía on Santorini. We’ve walked longer distances before but the elevation on this one changed a lot and the terrain was rocky at times, slippery at times, and my feet want to kill me. But at the end of the walk, you head down the hill into Oía after passing a beautiful hillside church and you are paid off with a stunning view of this lovely town. Granted, we are here during the off-season and almost everything in Oía is closed, but the walk was worth it. We left Athens today and drove to the Peloponnese peninsula to stay in Nafplio for the weekend. Along the way, we stopped in the city of Corinth, a city that dates back to the 5th Century B.C. This temple to the god Apollo was one of the first major structures in the ancient city. Way in the background up the hill is the castle of Corinth that’s been there for about a thousand years. As we explored the ruins, we encountered information about where the church dedicated to the Apostle Paul sat, marking the area where Paul taught the Corinthians and converted many of them to Christianity on his travels through the region. Corinthians is one of my favorite of Paul’s letters and I have a verse from Ephesians tattooed on my arm. (Coincidentally, from Corinth, Paul headed to Ephesus.) Greece is really gorgeous. We spent the morning wandering the Psyri neighborhood in Athens looking at all the street art. This city is a massive, sprawling metropolis, but within it is contained these amazing, charming neighborhoods. Tomorrow we head out to the Peloponnese area of Greece for the weekend.
