The more I think about it the more I like the idea that Lilian's father tried to pimp his daughter out to the Emperor after Penelope's death. It would make Lily sort of an anti-lp Jennette. Both are beautiful girls with brown hair that are resembling Claude's first love and were raised by an overly ambitious father/uncle who dreamed of a golden crown resting on their grandchild's head. Although popular among the other sex, they are completely uninterested in romance. They like to dress simple in private and prefer the lifestyle of commoners to that of a noblewoman (sewing and baking). Unlike lp Jennette, Lilian escaped her father's control and cut contacts with her family. She gave up her title and lands to live like a commoner servant in the Ruby Palace because she wanted to be true to herself instead of living a lie. Jennette's love for Athy strenghtened her desire to win Claude's favour, wheras Lilian's love for Diana made her turn away from the Emperor and her father's plans.
This could also be a great explanation for why one moment Lilian sings Claude's praises and the other she becomes scared and protective of Athy when he summons her to him. If Lilian's father had intended for his daughter to seek out Claude's love then he would convince her that the dynastic revolution and the massacre of the Ruby Palace were a necessary evil. He would want her to view Claude as the saviour of the nation who can do no wrong. It doesn't matter if he hurts the women around him as long as you are the only exception. If he hurts you and regrets it, then you have to accept his apology in form of dresses and jewelry. No matter how nonsensical it might appear to a regular human, if these are the lessons Lilian received from her father in her youth then it would make sense why Lilian would want Athy to meet Claude after she ran away when he tried to murder her. These moments would be when Lilian's old mindset took over. Had Lily managed to get close to Claude while successfully avoiding being bedded by him, then her relationship might have been comparable to lp Jennette and Claude's relationship in its early stages. Cold platonic dates that seemed like a horrible parody of a heterosexual relationship. Lily could have been a proto-Jennette who grew aware that her family was only using her as a pawn and happily stepped aside for Diana. An act that freed herself but would shackle her friend. Supposing Claude and Lilian had some kind of shared past, then it would offer another reason why he spared Lily's life, a reason that is unrelated to Diana.

At the beginning of the amnesia arc when Claude threatens to gouge out Athy's eyes Lily is standing behind Athy but in the next panel she is standing three steps in front of Athy, meaning Lily was willing to shield Athy with her body, take the blow and die for her

the fandom always talks about how Athy is like Diana or Claude, but why are we never considering how Athy may have took after the people who actually raised Athy instead of her mother who died before her birth and her father who wanted to know nothing of her? Doesn't lp Athy's introversion and reserved personality remind more of Lily? LP Athy doesn't have a partner during her debutante, and while yes, she was an unfavoured princess she was still a princess, the only known heir to the Obelian throne so far. She should have been able to find a partner even if she wasn't exceptionally beautiful or smart, just because her father's bloodline would excuse ever other fault in her. I think lp Athy became deeply introverted and disliked big crowds. She may have found it difficult to interact with men since she was raised by women alone and her nanny seldomly felt comfortable around the other sex. I can imagine lp Athy hiding behind pillars and watching others from afar like Lily once had done when her father had forced her to accompany him to public gatherings and expected her to entertain men. Even in wmmap Athy was sticking to Felix and using him as a shield standing between herself and the guests. She was hesitating to approach the other boys and girls her age and didn't start a conversation with them until Felix shoved her forward and disappeared into the background.

Athy already finds a tea party with a few girls draining enough and has to excuse herself to recover from the exhaustion, which points towards an introverted personality more than the extraverted one that is often mistakenly assigned to her because of her resemblance to Diana. She prefers a small circle of friends (Lucas and Jennette). Another similarity she shares with Lilian is that Athy rejects marriage and decides to devote herself to her family. She values her platonic/familial bonds over romance. LP Athy never had a fiance or husband and the fact that wmmap Athy, who unlike lp Athy is very popular, doesn't have one either points more towards both Athys being solo by choice rather than force. I like the headcanon that Athy is biromantic demisexual/sapphic asexual like Lily. The scene where Athy notes the sculptures of the concubines look attractive and the way she keeps fawning over Jennette's beauty leaves room to interpret that Athy could be attracted to women as well. A popular hc is that Lilian had been in love with Diana. I think it'd be cool if Lily and Athy shared the same orientation and had someone to talk with about without fearing to be judged harshly.

wouldn't it be fucking poetic if Diana died in childbirth at age 18, the same age Athy was executed?

Athy seems to be attracted to death. You can draw parallels between the maneating lotus flower, blackie, Jennette and Claude. Athy desires the closeness to things that can harm her and will literally kill her. It's also interesting to note that it always comes in twos and Athy never seems to really learn from her near-death experiences. She wanted to hold the lotus flower and almost drowns, yet the next boat ride, she still asks Claude to move the boat closer to the flower and falls into the water like before. She adopts Blackie as her pet and almost dies of a mana explosition triggered by her close proximity to her divine beast, yet even after Lucas explains the danger to her and tells her to spend less and less time with it, Athy still continues to play with Blackie and laments the fact that her time with him has been reduced. She almost dies a second time when she uses the opportunity to pet Blackie during her tea party after he had slipped away from the arms of the maid. Athy knows Jennette is a being born from black magic but ignores the warning of not one but two magicians and continues to seek her out. She wishes she had never read the Lovely Princess even though her knowledge that is also preventing her from growing closer to Jennette is what is saving her life. And lastly Claude, who had Athy killed in her past life. Athy still wants him to be her father even though he was her murderer.

It is conceivable that Lilian's father took her to balls hosted in the Imperial Palace and allowed her to become a lady's maid/court lady in the palace, because he was hoping that she would catch the eye of the Emperor, and Claude would make her his concubine. It is implied that after Diana died, noblemen would send women to Claude's chamber's to comfort him (but Claude reacted with violence). What if it was similar after Penelope's death? Claude's beautiful brunette fiancée died tragically young and Lilian's father happened to have a brunette daughter who was of a marriageable age and seemed to be his type. Lilian was forced to attend events hosted in the Imperial palace despite her discomfort around crowds and men, because it was her father's dream for his daughter to marry rich. Lilian had always been an obedient daughter, she was the perfect lady except for one flaw: she was not interested in men at all and would reject dates and marriage offers.
Her father was so happy when she informed him of her decision to move into the Palace, thinking his daughter had taken a fancy to Claude or grown ambitious and aimed for the position as his mistress (and one day empress), when the person Lilian wanted to get closer to was actually the Emperor's concubine Diana and not the Emperor himself. They would have had terrible fights after Diana's death and the massacre of the Ruby Palace, because her father thought this was Lilian's golden opportunity to take Diana's place and secure the position as the Emperor's only woman, now that all the competition was gone. Her father was appalled when he learned that not only did Lily never sleep with the Emperor, tried not even once to seduce him, his daughter was actually a lesbian who had fallen in love with a lowly dancer and was ready to give up her title and her inheritance to raise that woman's bastard child.

Could it be that Lily had been disowned for rejecting marriage offers and choosing to become the nanny of a dancer's daughter? Lilian York was a nobleman's daughter who attended royal banquets and balls before, but after she started working in the Ruby Palace she was never invited to another event again. Not to Athy's debutante ball, not the founding day of Obelia, the Emperor's birthday and not even Athy's coronation. Before Athy won Claude over, the Ruby Palace could not afford more staff and the building deteroriated. They had to ration luxury goods like chocolate. Had Lily still been a noblewoman, she could have bought experienced staff in child raising from home and workers who could do maintenence and repair of the Ruby Palace. She would have used her money to order lp Athy a debutante dress fitting for a princess. Athy was like a daughter to her that's why it's so strange they lived in "proverty" (from the pov of royals).
