Light had just begun to drift off to sleep for a well-deserved nap when something hit his face. He jolted, sitting up immediately. Looking down at his lap, he stared at the strange black notebook.  Furrowing his brows, he looked up at his shelf and then around the room before focusing his attention on the book again. Death Note..? Did Sayu plant this in my room to mess with me? Blinking, he flipped it open, scanning over the rules. Jeez...it reads like some lame chain e-mail. Definitely a prank from Sayu. I’d think she could still do better than this, though. He was ready to stand up, leave his room, and confront his sister when a voice reached his ears.
His cry of horror was muffled by the hand over his mouth. He stared at...himself? At least, the thing before him looked like him, except horrendously twisted with black wings and sharpened claws. This is a nightmare, this has to be some weird nightmare. I fell asleep and I’m dreaming after being stressed today.
When the hand finally lowered, he let out a shuddery breath. “...anymore..? You’re a Shinigami? Shinigami are real?” He couldn’t understand what was going on, but it did make sense for dreams not to make sense. “Why are you here..?” He glanced down at the notebook on his lap. “...is this yours?”

“I wanted to tell you that I’m L.”
Chills ran across Light’s skin as his eyes shot to look at the bizarre man seated beside him. L? Is he serious? Why would L be approaching me..? I know my dad is involved with the Kira case, but there’s no way L would want to bring me in on this. Shifting in his seat, he rest his hands on his knees.
“If you are who you say you are, then I’m impressed. I’ve been a fan for a long time,” he murmured, holding the detective’s gaze evenly. It felt like the odd man was dissecting him with his eyes, prying him apart to examine every detail of his soul. Adding to the unnerving situation was this...feeling that he was being watched by someone. Having eyes on him wasn’t terribly unusual, but something about this felt different.
___
Following his tennis match with L, Light made his way home, left alone with his thoughts. He had a sneaking suspicion that the detective might be scoping him out, whether it was as a potential recruit (a very unlikely option) or a suspect in the case. The very idea of being a Kira suspect made him sick to his stomach, but he could understand the reasoning. His intellect, his father, his location- all of it lined up very conveniently. He also had no way of knowing how long that suspect list was, either. It was entirely possible he was only one of many Kira suspects, and L was just trying to rattle him to get more information.
Once inside his house, he made a beeline for his room, making excuses of being tired and too jittery to eat so his mother wouldn’t bother him. Hurrying up the stairs, he shut himself in his bedroom, dropping his bag at the foot of his bed. There’s nothing I can really do about this situation...I know I’m not Kira, so I have nothing to fear about this.

The fact that, so far, Near seemed to agree with and approve of everything Light was suggesting gave the man a rush he hadn’t felt in a long time. He couldn’t even remember the last time his own father had treated him like this. Unable to help it, a grin spread across his face. It felt so nice to finally have someone he could talk to honestly, without fear of intense judgement and open suspicion. He understood that the other was still obligated to suspect him, but he was actually listening, and that made a world of difference to Light.
“Yes, that’s exactly what I thought. I’ve kept an eye on her with what resources I can spare as of recent. I can give you a copy of the list I’ve made of people she’s interacted with repeatedly over the past few months, narrowed down to potential suspects and notable individuals.” He paused, lifting the cup to his lips and taking another sip. “Yes, I took photocopies of the pages in the notebook with writing, but I’ve already cross-referenced it with Kiyomi’s handwriting. It doesn’t match.”
A faint frown curved his lips, his gaze falling to the cup as his fingers idly stroked the rim. There weren’t many leads, and that didn’t really help his odds. However, he was hopeful, and he found himself trusting his new partner. *My soulmate,* he reminded himself, his hand briefly stiffening in movement.
“I’m honestly really thankful you’re here, Near. I’ve been trying to investigate her on my own, but there’s no chance I’d be able to keep the task force’s trust when even my own father already suspects me.”
@nearriver continued from here
Light had always assumed the numbers would just disappear or stop. He didn’t think he’d survive this case. He hadn’t thought that went L told him he was a suspect. He hadn’t thought that when he’d spent five weeks bound in a cell. He hadn’t thought that when L told the others that, if he died, Light was Kira. He hadn’t thought that when L did die, and the taskforce considered apprehending him right then and there. His own father. His friend, Matsuda. And then, on top of it all, that final bit of salt in the wound, L had left him his title.
He wasn’t an idiot. He knew L didn’t trust him as far as he could throw him. This was some sort of attempt at a trap, but the detective had failed to account for one thing: Light Yagami was not Kira. He had to deny it every single day. Had to tell his father, his coworkers, and even himself.
When L’s successors came into play, Light realized just exactly what L’s trap was. He’d given him the title to lure out his successors, to sic them on him without hesitation. It made Light sick. When Near suggested they meet in person, he jumped at the idea. If anything, it would give him the chance to explain himself in person. L couldn’t see it, but maybe his successor could finally see that he was innocent.
He hadn’t paid attention to his numbers in the past few years. However, he glanced at them that morning as he showered, caught off-guard when he saw how little time was left. Today would be the day, and it lined up with- No. There was no way.
He kept telling himself that, until the numbers hit zero the moment he opened the door and saw Near. Of-fucking-course.
“Humor at my expense. At least, that’s what I’ve gathered from the past few years,” he murmured, hesitating before walking over and extending his hand to the other. “And, based on the performance and actions of the previous L, I’m...a bit wary to immediately trust you, as well.” He couldn’t help but wonder if the other knew what all L had done- what L had done to him.

Light jolted when the door opened, startled out of his thoughts. Again, the servant refused to speak- although he did allow for him to know when dinner would be. That was something, even if the bare minimum, right? However, horror washed over Light when he saw the dress. No. This had to be some kind of mistake. Immediately, he looked back at Cabernet.
“Excuse me, I believe there may have been a misunderstanding. I can’t-“ He stared as the door closed, leaving him alone in the room. “...wear this.” It had to be a joke. There was no way the prince actually expected him to wear some skimpy dress. The servant would come back in with proper clothes any second now. He stood there, waiting, and waiting, and waiting.
After a while, he checked the clock. 6:30pm. This wasn’t a joke. It wasn’t a joke. Briefly, he considered refusing and attending dinner in his current state, but he knew that wouldn’t end well. His hands shaking, he shed the nightgown, taking the dress and carefully stepping into it. He reached back to pull up the zipper, heat filling his face when he realized there wasn’t one. It almost reached his tailbone. Swearing under his breath, he slid the shoes onto his feet. “What’s the point of this shit..? I can’t even walk on my ankle in these...” He grumbled, gently tightening the straps.
With that done, his gaze finally rest on the velvet case. His instinct said it was jewelry, but he couldn’t be certain. 6:50pm. Swallowing hard, he opened the case. Thankfully, it was only a necklace. He could deal with that. He carefully lifted it to his collar, connecting it behind his neck. The brilliant red stone felt almost heavy on his skin, but it truly was beautiful. If he wasn’t so weary, he might have been impressed. Taking a few breaths to calm himself, he sat on the edge of the bed, waiting for the servant to return and carry him to dinner.
@notonlykira
Light was relatively fresh out of college, and he knew that most people wouldn’t be terribly dissatisfied with an entry level position. His family hadn’t really appreciated his desire to switch to investigative journalism over law enforcement, but they still supported him. Even when he left the country to travel the world for “inspiration,” they continued to support him. He truly felt free for the first time, able to learn and experience the world while working for an online magazine. He really had no excuse to be so antsy, but he was.
All his superiors wanted him to do was write foolish clickbait articles. Celebrity gossip, fear-mongering- all of it was so below him it felt filthy. But, as he traveled, luck struck, and a story practically fell into his lap. It had just enough sensationalized details to satisfy his superiors. Wealthy, foreign prince, missing royals, missing citizens, and a massive, ancient castle- all the makings of a “juicy” story. However, Light’s focus was almost exclusively on these missing people. He had to know what was going on in that castle.
So here he was, driving along a dirt road through a Transylvanian forest in what he could swear was the thickest fog he’d ever seen. Inevitably so, as if fate was playing some massive cliched joke on him, he lost control of the vehicle. Left lying in a ditch, in the mud, in the middle of nowhere. Wincing, he slumped back into the dirt, almost certain he could hear something moving in the brush.

Light, on the phone with Watari: Hi, um, do you know if L--I mean, Ryuzaki, has any other clothes? Um, no reason, um, oh ok fine. He spilled milkshake all over himself and isn't doing anything about it and it really fucking bothers me. It's gross. His shirt is pink and sticky? Ok, he has a closet on the fifty-first floor? Thanks so much.
Light, entering L's walk-in closet that is simply 50 pairs each white shirts and loose jeans as well as a table of wigs, makeup kits, and one singular pair of shoes--crocs: rYUZAKI!!!!!!!!! *starts screaming*
