"I see." A simple reply, she knew; Angela wrestled with this newfound knowledge. She was getting better at doing this dance with Jimmy, daring not to push him into telling her more than he wanted her to know. But Richard was different, and she wasn't sure if she should just leave it at that. With a voice both hesitant yet hopeful she continued, "Why don't you sit down? Make yourself comfortable."

Are you sure you're okay?

“ It only grazed me. ”

She wasn’t talking about that, of course. The suit could be patched, the flesh would mend in no time flat. The blood he scrubbed off his hands didn’t belong to him, and try as he might to hide it from her, Angela was much too keen to be misled by a little awkward sleight of hand.

One of the things Richard liked about her.

“ Just, mm, an accident. At the warehouse. ”

He hated lying to her. She deserved better. But Tommy had a way of creeping into earshot, and Jimmy, well… She was Jimmy’s wife, after all.

The seagulls are her favorite part of the new house.

The sun hasn’t risen yet, Tommy still asleep in his bed. It’s all quiet and bleary–save for the cries of the gulls outside.

Jimmy’s his best, here. Quiet and stroking circles across the fragile knobs of her spine. The closest to Before she ever sees him.

Rumpled sheets tucked around his hip, voice groggy and unused.

Sometimes, when she’s tucked under the bulk of his arm, his hands carding through the early-morning-snags of her curls, she feels so bitter she could puke. The happiness twining ‘round her soul like the ivy choking the begonias in the garden. It’ll disintegrate when the day starts. When Jimmy buttons up his suits and his eyes and his mouth. And the looming shadow turns the press of his lips hemlock-sweet

Her throat burns when she speaks.

“We could’ve made each other so happy.”

The flicker of his lighter, the same one he clenched during the shelling, the same one he lit to keep off the trench rats, lights up the planes of his face.

“This– you and me, when we’re like this, is the closest I can get to happiness anymore.”

The squawk of the gulls spreads out between them, a melancholy choir.

She presses a kiss to his chest.
