How To Be A Rad Wytch: Looking Busy on My Lap Top
How To Be A Rad Wytch: Looking Busy on My Lap Top
Sunday is the day of rest for a lot of people, but ideally, I do grown up busy things on Sunday. I wake up naturally around 9 and lay around worrying about the things I need to do. My room and kitchen are messy, but I want to go to a coffee shop and look busy with my laptop. I recently got my laptop fixed and it makes me feel fancy. (huh?) It takes me a while to actually get out of bed. I watch…

Do we have to words to express how much we're loving Elle Roberts? She wrote a piece for us that we have literally read three times over in as many hours. SO. GOOD.

Black Girls are Magic
"Black Girls are Magic" by Ariana Beedie
When I wake up in the morning, I look at my face in the mirror. I look deeply into my brown eyes, my high cheeks, my white teeth and my thick, coarse hair. I tell myself, “you are magic.” “And everything about you is magic.” Little reminders of my queen-ship are crucial. As I’ve gotten older, there’s been more pro-blackness projected in pop culture. Within that realm, there’s also much room for…

Papiver Somniferum
Katelin Rice poetry, "Papiver Somniferum"
My warmth is poppies. You derive opium and I’m left in trance eating Tarot cards for breakfast. You awake surprised by the red of my blood, scarlet petals. I sip sap to wash down what I wish I didn’t know. The high priestess stuck in my throat with shells of seed. You pick strawberries with heavy and haggard hands. You hand me one and say I look hungry, but I’m full with my fortune.

The Numbers Game
I learned how to count when I was four. I was in preschool then. We learned our letters and our numbers and our colors, among other things. My mother read to my brother and I every day, and we were active kids. I’m sure that I knew how to count to five before preschool.   I was six when I noticed the counting. On the school bus, I counted the seats, the windows, the kids. When we got to school, I…

The Age of Consent: The birth and development of a secular sexual ethic
The Age of Consent: The birth and development of a secular sexual ethic
For a private affair, sexuality is quite a public issue. That’s because there are rules to it, and rightfully so. You can’t just have everyone demanding sex with anyone and anything they’d like. However, attitudes toward what the basis for a sexual ethic should be are changing. In America, viewed since its inception as a Christian nation despite the “separation of church and state” credo, the…

Everyone and No One: Jean
Everyone and No One: Jean
I’m going to tell you about Jean. Jean has a lot of tattoos, symbols of the phases of the moon on his knuckles, angels and devils etched out, no color, only thin and thick black lines on both arms. His arms are like a sketchbook. He carries a black bound sketch journal that he writes in. The first day I met Jean, we pulled down the Listening Booth at 9:30 am, and Jean sat down without a word. Out…
