In-ho study and why I write him with Dissociative Identity Disorder

I just wanted to talk about this because I find it is a very rare thing and even then I find very little putting In-ho in a light that doesn't make him more monstrous for his atrocities. I'm also a firm believer that he is in pain just like Gi-hun and has learned to mask that pain because it is not safe to have pain when you are the Frontman.

I do roleplays and I post them on AO3 as I write, In-ho is my favorite character to write because I have found ways to apply my own pain to him. I understand grief can be hard to get rid of, and I grieve everyone who has left my life, through different ideologies and paths or with general life circumstances.

In-ho also presents with having three particular reaction sets.

First to preface, this man doesn't have his father around, there are different ways this can be looked at, maybe he passed away somehow shortly after Jun-ho's birth, maybe he left for some particular reason. We also know nothing about In-ho's mother and know he has been around his step mother for at least a little longer than Jun-ho has been in the picture. She's an absolute sweetheart but that's a rough pill to swallow to have a step parent in your life. He was also in some ways probably pulled into the position of being a parent, looking at how old he was when Jun-ho was born, he helped raise him at sixteen, which from what I've seen, it can be hard to suddenly no longer be an only child that far into your own life.

When we look at the games, especially when Jun-ho gets onto the island, the first time we see In-ho he's very serious and controlled. His every action is measured and while his body language shows almost a stiff reluctance, his face shows close to no emotion at all as he offers his hand to Jun-ho and the gradual change that we see to him already looking mournful before he even takes the shot.

Later in the bathroom, he's holding himself together but hes breaking, this was a switch, two personalities are seen in my opinion here, the Frontman (Who I have affectionately named Choi Yu-jun) and In-ho himself, he has had to learn to maintain himself, from a rough home life in his childhood to a hard time in the military and even beyond that in the police force as a detective. His life is regimented, he had to be perfect.

In the limo, we see In-ho again, he's guarded but his expression holds more emotion, he almost is amused, teasing I would say.

When they are in the games, or In-ho coming to sabotage the games, we actually see all three personalities in various points. It is mostly In-ho though. Joining the games is Yu-jun, he walks down the aisle notably more relaxed but still stiff, controlled, even being relaxed is a way of showing a sense of control for them. They have played the games, there's a level of trauma being in those dorms, I don't think they have been in that room in almost ten years.

In-ho approaches Gi-hun later when they're eating, he's trying to manipulate him, showing him a more open naive personality. That personality is an act, the name he claims later on is not completely honest either. When they are playing the pentathlon though, that, I think, is when Oh Young-il is actually present, he barely fronts anymore and after the games are decided the first round of gunshots brings him out.

They are nervous being close to a gun, to really even the soldiers when they aren't protected by their suit. Everything was precise, they wouldn't kill him, but there was always a fear and In-ho folded.

Young-il can show joy easier, he can laugh still without it hurting somewhere inside. The first team wins, he's up with their group cheering for them, they won! They could win, they could survive. He was brought back to his days playing for his sick wife and a child they had already almost said good bye to. They just wanted their wife to make it.

Now, they clung to Gi-hun, Young-il does that he clings, he holds, he would come home to their wife and she would know it was him because he would lay against her with a relaxed ease. When it's their turn to play, they have to play their part again, the timer has too much time, this is either In-ho or Yu-jun here. They're amused, feeling the panic in the chains that hold them to Gi-hun and 388. He's supposed to yell at them, they pull an act, hitting themselves and he just stops it. He works tries to calm them. And it works too well. He cannot be allowed to die. The rest of the team would be shot but right now he cannot give any orders to the guards, even a hand motion would be noticed by the team. They had to survive as a team.

I'll cut off here but what im saying is In-ho and Yu-jun are the Frontman, they have primarily fronted together for a decade, working through trauma of still being on this island and gradually deciding this would be their final resting place. I think even if this idea is never given a nod of "yes, you read so deep and you read correctly" we will still see In-ho having decided that the island will be where he dies afterall.

Young-il in this idea is the closest thing to a little their system has, he is also the oldest and the first alter. It's been him and In-ho for their whole life. His emotions are almost unregulated, you could read every thought he has when he fronts, you can tell when In-ho or Yu-jun are talking to him because his forehead creases, his jaw clenches.

In-ho shows expression in his eyes, you see his sadness (the way he looks like he's about to cry watching Gi-hun when he's in the dorm again), and he wallows in it, man has never gotten time to fully come to terms with his wife dying without him.

Yu-jun shows nothing, his face is a mask as much as the frontman mask itself is. His eyes stare ahead, empty, almost unfeeling, pained beyond pain and not showing any of it.

They also see the the other characters differently, Yu-jun needs to protect himself and In-ho, a part of that is separation, the players are referred to by a number. In-ho mentally refers to Gi-hun by his name, occasionally amusing himself with Gi-hun-ssi or even more scandalous, hyung. But he calls him by his number to his face, to show he's the Frontman. Young-il will always use his name and any player's name, he tries to know the names of the guards, once they get down to 16 players, should he be paying attention and be present, he will know their names.
