Just the beat. I was inspired. Cleaning my room to a Pete rock instrumental became my norm. Life in the 5th grade as far as I could remember was fun. It’s funny I don’t remember much about the 5th grade but the 6th! Maybe it’s because we moved to parkwood court. Driving to our new home I seen two of my best school friends playing football, la Brian and Aj! oh this is going to be dope. AJ didn’t stay on that street but that’s when I found out the two were related.
The new kid on the Block.
So a lot happened to me on park wood court. The moment music hit me, finding a close friend, getting into fights, almost getting jumped, having bullies and having a girl crush on me (Tina from across the street) Double dribble Derick was the name given to me because I would obviously double dribble playing basketball at la Brian’s house, that’s where I learned how to hoop, and not double dribble. So many memories but if I can share a couple that stood out the most. On day Chris invited me over to his house. Chris was a big dude didn’t do anything but kick it on his porch and he reminded me of biggie smalls. His house just always looked dark to me (sorry Chris) but it did I was a lil poo butt nigga at the time not the coolest either I kicked a kid in the nuts because him and his homies were about to jump my cousin. Fuck that I ran home and ha! Oh shit I’m fast. Back to being invited into chris house it was so different then mine. The classic leather couches with jaguar table top and leaf lights, and the smell of weed. He was always home alone, in fact I never seen his parents there EVER! He too like my sister had his enlightenment in music and playing on the TV bone thugs n harmony crossroads. All I remember is that dark song singing about death, then at the altar watching family members walk into the afterlife, the video and Chris saying we’re all going to die one day freaked me out! I went home and told my mom we’re all going to die! No more going to Chris’s house my dad said. Another day my dad was on the phone with his good friend chuck his rap partner from back in the day and he told chuck my boy can rap! I looked at my dad confused. Little did I know around the house in the car all day everyday I was rapping songs like they were mine. Get on the phone and rap that song you always rapping to chuck. My first performance! Thanks skee-lo “I wish I was a little bit taller/ I wish I was a baller / I wish I had a girl that looked good and I would call her “ I did my thang they laughed and said good job but they had no idea what they created.

Dear hip-hop,
Happy 50th. My earliest memories of music have to be special just for the simple fact I still remember them. E-40, EMPD, Scarface and LL cool J are some of the artists I remember my dad playing as a young kid riding shotgun in his Cadillac mobbing threw town, and altho I was just a kid and didn’t quite understand the content the energy was alive and flowing. I do remember the day it all changed. Scarface-it ain’t shit to me verse two, “man hold up/ I got too much beat in my truck! “ Boom!!!!! A hard 808 after that bar smacked the energy right into my entire body. It clicked. I herd music differently after that day and I wanted to hear more. My sister a few years older then me had already had her enlightenment because all she would watch were music videos. Until that day I never understood why she did but after that day I sat right with her taking in everything I herd and saw. She didn’t like that, in-fact I remember her saying why don’t you go play with your toys, but I didn’t care for toys anymore I wanted to hear face mob. I asked my father if he had any music I could listen to. This all happened around the 4th or 5th grade and he wasn’t about to share his spice 1 tape with me ( I had to steal those) but he did hand me a few cd’s EMPD’s greatest hits, LL cool J, cool Moe dee, Nas, a mix from his DJ friend fresh cuts (my favorite) and a Pete rock and Mc Lyte promo cd which was one song and the instrumental to that song. Just the beat. ……..to be continued.
