I meant to RB this with my own comment yesterday but forgot 😭 anyways. SU is of course really progressive, but it does feel as if there was a refusal to engage with pre-existing biases in the writer's room. And it's not as if the show is entirely disrespectful to its black cast if it's characters of colours in general, but when it comes to major characters there's just so many questionable decisions ...

And the thing that's so frustrating about Bismuth is not only her being black coded, but her being a more masculine black woman. There's a lot to be said about the show's treatment of women who are less than feminine, but Bismuth is really where it becomes most obvious to me.

It's really unfortunate because as a character Bismuth is really great, she's interesting and fun and well-written at the end of the day. But her introduction paired with the fact that we don't actually see her again for a whole season is kind of insane 😭

I feel like my biggest frustration in the world is that people could not accept criticisms about the racism in steven universe without pushing it to the extreme of su being literal nazi propaganda that you got called out for looking in the general direction of. and like because it got so ridiculous people are like wow people were so stupid and it's like yes they were really stupid generally but like we can still talk about the stuff that isn't so great. but that will not happen because critical thought on social media operates in extremes
