Chapter 3 - Yelena

“Do you always dream about me?” Yelena asked teasingly, glad when a small smile floated across Bob’s face.

He was picking at a loose thread on her t-shirt, and he looked away from her as he said, “some nights.”

He hardly dealt with his own feelings, let alone someone else’s, so he doesn’t know what leads him to taking a step closer, and pushing the door open with a red-knuckled hand. He asks the only thing he can think to ask. “You hungry?” - Bob shakes his head. “I don’t think I’m supposed to be strong.” “Then it is good thing you have friends who are,” Alexei says warmly. “They’ll protect you. We will. зуб даю." He stares at Bob so intently he fears he might frighten the man, but Bob doesn’t shy away from his gaze. Instead, he looks right on back, like he was hanging on every word. “Besides,” Alexei goes on, “there are important things beside strength. You are kind, and sensitive, and only one in whole place who knows how to clean dishes.” Bob laughs wetly, and that was really all Alexei wanted. - The one where Bob has nightmares, and the rest of the Thunderbolts take turns helping him through it in their own ways.

Yelena nods. “It’s okay. Just breathe.” And she waits. She draws little shapes on his knee with her thumb, absentmindedly, reaches out and drags her fingers through his hair behind his ear, whispers a sorry when he flinches. Yelena hushes him softly, hums, picks a loose thread off his shoulder. And she waits. Until the sobs turn to sniffs, until his frame relaxes, until he takes a long, deep breath and turns his tear tattooed face to hers. And she smiles. - The one where Bob remembers what he did to New York, and Yelena's there to offer comfort.

Somewhere above them, there’s a baby crying.

It drones on and on, a monotonous wail that he’s all too familiar with, and it gets under his skin, sings through his blood, sucks at the bone marrow.

“Whose is this?” The Ghost tries to ask lightly.

They’re all staring at him. He figures the grating cries of the child and how Bucky so kindly informed them all his wife had left him gave them a clue. That was nice of him.

John doesn’t answer the question, just pushes his way to the front of the group and begins to make his way up the stairs.

The crying doesn’t stop. Nobody says anything else, cracks any jokes, asks any questions.

They’d learnt their lesson.
