Toxic masculinity and harassment in disguise
The appeal of figures like Andrew Tate to young men can be attributed to their ability to address real issues such as romantic rejection, economic failure, and loneliness. These influencers exploit the anxieties of young men, offering simplistic explanations and solutions that resonate with their experiences.
"Hustlers University" and its deranged ideology
Andrew Tate, along with figures like Jordan Peterson and Elliott Hulse, has been influential in promoting toxic masculinity and misogynistic ideologies (Rich & Bujalka, 2023). Tate's "Hustler's University" exemplifies this by creating exclusive chat rooms that promise men solutions to their fears, centering on Tate's teachings. Toxic masculinity, as propagated by these figures, emphasizes toughness and strength, equating weakness with femininity (Crouthamel, 2025). It encourages emotional suppression, particularly of sadness, vulnerability, and fear, leading to mental health issues. This ideology rejects feminine traits such as emotional expressiveness and empathy, while promoting dominance and control through aggression or intimidation (Crouthamel, 2025). It also fosters hyper-independence, discouraging men from seeking help and leading to isolation. Furthermore, it includes sexual aggression and discrimination against those who do not conform to traditional gender roles, contributing to a culture of sexual violence and prejudice.
Satirizing Harassment
Satire has long been recognized as a powerful tool for social critique, capable of exposing and undermining societal norms and behaviors that are otherwise difficult to challenge directly (Vitis & Gilmour, 2016). In the context of online sexual harassment, satire can serve as an effective means of resistance and empowerment for victims. Anna Gensler’s Instagram project, exemplifies this approach by using humor and art to confront and ridicule the perpetrators of online harassment (Vitis & Gilmour, 2016). Through her satirical drawings, Gensler not only highlights the absurdity and offensiveness of the harassers' comments but also reclaims agency and control over the narrative.
In summary, people's influence such as Andrew Tate's on boys has underscored the need to address important social issues such as loneliness and economic failure. Although misogynistic ideas and toxic masculinity provide inadequate and harmful answers, creative resistance, in the form of satire, is a temporary, helpful, and powerful response that empowers victims and calls out toxic acts.

What is Livestreaming?
Livestreaming, defined as the real-time broadcasting of video content over the internet, has revolutionized digital media by enabling immediate and interactive connections between creators and audiences (Taylor, 2018). This technology encompasses various types, including gaming, Just Chatting, music, educational content, and ASMR, each catering to different interests and communities. Platforms like Twitch, YouTube Live, and Facebook Live have popularized these diverse streams, transforming how we consume and engage with content.
The Rising Trend of Livestreaming
The popularity of livestreaming has surged, especially post-pandemic, as people sought new ways to connect and entertain themselves during lockdowns (Flynn, 2023). This rise is reflected in the significant growth in audience engagement and creator monetization through subscriptions, donations, and sponsorships (Spears, 2025).
Cons of Being a Livestreamer
While livestreaming offers exciting opportunities for content creators, it also presents significant challenges and inequalities. On YouTube, for instance, researchers estimate that the top 3% of channels receive 90% of the viewership, highlighting the difficulty for new or smaller creators to gain visibility and success (Duffy & Meisner, 2022). Similarly, on Twitch, leaked information revealed that to achieve the current median household income in the US, a streamer would need to rank in the top 0.015% of all streamers (Duffy & Meisner, 2022). This indicates that the vast majority of streamers struggle to make a sustainable income from their efforts.
Gender and racial disparities further exacerbate these challenges. According to a Twitch report, only 3 of the top 100 earners were women, underscoring the gender imbalance in top-tier earnings (Duffy & Meisner, 2022). Additionally, crowdsourced pay information from influencers reveals a significant race-based pay gap, with Black Instagram influencers receiving considerably lower rates than their white counterparts (Duffy & Meisner, 2022).
The dark side of competitive gaming
While numbers don't lie, their interpretation can vary. Initially seen as a lucrative industry, esports faced a dramatic shift post-COVID-19. Investors have realized that esports doesn't generate significant profits, as most followers are teenagers and young adults with limited purchasing power. Post-pandemic, cost-cutting measures were implemented, reducing prize pools, participant numbers, and event scales. For instance, Sentinels, despite their strong online presence and effective marketing, only broke even last year, highlighting the financial challenges within the industry (Sentinels Corporation, 2024).
"The Company has a net operating loss of $8,401,328, an operating cash flow loss of $8,640,940, and liquid assets in cash of $44,600, which is less than a year’s worth of cash reserves as of December 31, 2023. These factors normally raise substantial doubt about the Company’s ability to continue as a going concern." Sentinels Corporation (2024).
Ironmouse – The Queen of VTubing
Ironmouse is a prominent Puerto Rican VTuber, singer, and Twitch streamer. She began her career in 2017 and is a founding member of the VTuber group VShojo, launched in 2020 (Horetski, 2024). Originally aspiring to be an opera singer, Ironmouse's plans were derailed by her diagnosis with Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID), a condition that left her largely bedridden and isolated (Horetski, 2024).
Ironmouse faces significant challenges due to her battle with CVID. This immune disorder requires her to remain isolated and on oxygen support 24/7. Despite these obstacles, she has used her platform to raise awareness about her condition and the importance of plasma donations, which are crucial for her treatment(Plasma Hero, n.d.). Thanks to this job, she was able to generate income at home. Ironmouse's story is a powerful example of how creativity, resilience, and community can transform personal adversity into widespread inspiration and success.

Digitized dysmorphia
Snapchat, launched in 2011 by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown, revolutionized social media with its disappearing photos, encouraging spontaneous and authentic interactions (Aviv, 2024). This innovation set Snapchat apart, making it a major player in the social media landscape. One of Snapchat's groundbreaking features is its use of augmented reality (AR) technology. AR powers Snapchat's filters and interactive lenses, overlaying digital effects onto real-world images (UMATechnology, 2025). This technology uses facial detection tools to map out features and align virtual elements seamlessly.
Initially, Snapchat's AR filters were simple and playful, but they have evolved into powerful tools for influencers and brands. Today, AR filters shape digital aesthetics and influence social media trends, becoming integral to digital marketing (Barker, 2020).
The Filter Problem: When AR Defines Beauty Filters on social media subtly impose beauty standards by altering facial features to fit idealized aesthetics. Barker (2020) highlights how Snapchat’s filters, initially playful, now reinforce exclusionary beauty ideals by slimming jawlines, enlarging eyes, and smoothing skin. These changes often lighten skin tones and align with a narrow beauty definition, reinforcing societal biases (Barker, 2020). Over time, users internalize these standards, affecting self-perception and self-esteem.
The Psychological Effects of Beauty Algorithms Filters create unrealistic beauty expectations, imposing Eurocentric standards (Our Mental Health, 2024). "Snapchat dysmorphia" describes individuals seeking cosmetic procedures to resemble their filtered selfies, driven by a desire to match these idealized images (Our Mental Health, 2024). Medical professionals report an increase in patients requesting surgeries inspired by their digital appearance, further highlighting the deep psychological impact of AR filters (Warren, 2025).
Advertising and the Pushback Against One-Size-Fits-All Beauty
Brands use AR for personalized beauty experiences, allowing users to try makeup virtually and receive tailored recommendations, increasing engagement and trust (Sinai, 2023). Companies like L’Oréal and Sephora leverage AR to enhance consumer confidence in online purchases (Howley, 2021).
Conversely, Dove’s "Real Beauty" campaign challenges narrow beauty norms by featuring diverse women, promoting self-esteem and body positivity (Team TBH, 2024). Unlike social media’s algorithm-driven standards, campaigns like Dove’s celebrate authenticity, encouraging self-acceptance (Unilever, 2024). The contrast between digital perfection and real-world diversity highlights the need for a more inclusive approach to beauty.
As we explore AR filters, it's crucial to think critically about their impact on self-image. While these tools can be fun, they often promote narrow beauty standards that affect how we see ourselves. Embracing natural beauty and diversity is essential to counteract these algorithm-driven ideals.

Understanding the algorithm, pornification and platform algorithmic bias
Understanding the complexities of platform features and algorithms is crucial for content creators. Algorithms are sets of rules or instructions used by platforms to determine which content is shown to users (Chen et al., 2025). They analyze user behavior and preferences to deliver personalized content. However, creating content solely to please algorithms can be problematic (Chen et al., 2025). The key is to balance algorithmic strategies with authentic content that conveys the creator's message effectively.
Platforms like TikTok use broad community guidelines, which can be inconsistently applied by AI algorithms. This can result in videos being flagged for arbitrary reasons, as the AI determines content suitability (Dr Rachita Ota et al., 2024). Influencer marketing has become a multi-billion-dollar industry, dominated by women who set cultural trends on platforms like Instagram. This leads to vast amounts of digital content promoting products and services, often without fair compensation for the creators (Dr Rachita Ota et al., 2024). The challenge lies in navigating these algorithms while maintaining the integrity and originality of the content.
The rise of social media has significantly impacted body image perceptions, particularly through the influence of fitness influencers. Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a mental health condition characterized by obsessive concerns over perceived physical flaws, which can lead to severe emotional distress and impaired daily functioning (Earl, 2022).
Mai Quang Huy, a Vietnamese fitness influencer, recently asserted that men must weigh over 70kg to avoid being categorized as having "victim weight," implying that those weighing less are susceptible to bullying and their relatives may also be targeted (Dang Tran Quoc, 2025). This statement is overly simplistic and problematic as it disregards critical factors such as height, body fat ratio, and overall health (Dang Tran Quoc, 2025).
By focusing solely on weight, Huy's assertion promotes a narrow and potentially harmful perspective on fitness. Given his influence over a segment of young people, such one-sided statements can perpetuate distorted views on body image and fitness, leading to negative consequences for his audience's physical and mental well-being.

Fast fashion, Slow fashion movement and does online boycott make a difference in real life?
In recent years, the global market has observed a significant expansion of Chinese products across various sectors, including the fashion industry. However, this discussion will focus solely on the fashion sector. Personally, I do not possess extensive knowledge or a strong interest in fashion. My primary concern is to purchase and wear items that are suitable for me, with a particular emphasis on durability.
Before discussing the slow fashion movement, it is essential to understand the reasons for its emergence and the issues it aims to address. The primary catalyst for the slow fashion movement is the fast fashion trend, characterized by rapid cycles of shopping, consumption, and disposal (Ethical Consumer, 2024). Fast fashion might persist if it did not pose significant environmental threats or exhibit serious detrimental effects.
But in fact, fast fashion is more harmful than beneficial, first of all in terms of the amount of clothes discarded, because of its "fast" nature, the disposal rate is very high, causing a large amount of clothes to become waste.
SHEIN, Chinese's fashion giant
Shein's problems go beyond fast fashion to include serious human rights issues, especially the unfair treatment of their workers. Shein sells only online and doesn't have physical stores. They have been accused of using child labor and not paying their workers properly, often outsourcing labor (DW Planet A, 2021). This issue isn't just with Shein, it's a broader societal problem (Know The Chain, 2024).
Many influencers have protested against these practices online. However, I think this is part of the reason the problem isn't solved. Issues discussed online often stay there and don't lead to real-world solutions. Social media trends lack sustained effort, once the protests die down, people go back to buying from Shein.
A good example is H&M, where people's attitudes changed temporarily during protests but then returned to normal (Vietnam Finance, 2023). The fashion industry also generates over 92 million tons of textile waste each year, much of which ends up in landfills (DW Planet A, 2021). This shows the environmental impact of fast fashion and the need for more sustainable practices.
Materialism in Korea and its effect on the environment
Korea's rapid economic growth has cultivated a culture of consumerism, where material possessions, including fashionable clothing, are often used to signify success and social status (Korea Exposé, 2018). There is considerable social pressure in Korea to keep up with the latest trends, leading to increased consumption of fast fashion as individuals strive to fit in and be perceived positively by their peers (Korea Exposé, 2018).
Shein's fast fashion model is particularly effective in this context, as it allows the company to quickly respond to the latest trends, which is crucial in a market like Korea where fashion trends change rapidly. This agility appeals to consumers who wish to remain fashionable and up-to-date
Materialism plays a significant role in driving Shein's customer base, as the high value placed on material goods in society promotes increased clothing consumption (Oh, 2024). Additionally, Shein's competitively priced products align well with the needs of young consumers, further boosting its appeal. This combination of rapid trend responsiveness and affordable pricing makes Shein a popular choice among Korean consumers.
The consequences of Korea's rapid economic growth and the resulting culture of consumerism, combined with Shein's fast fashion model, are multifaceted. Environmentally, the high consumption of fast fashion leads to significant pollution, resource depletion, and increased textile waste. Socially, the pressure to keep up with trends can cause stress, financial strain, and a focus on superficial values, impacting mental health and well-being.

Digital citizenship, different approaches to digital citizenship and intersectionality
Digital citizenship, at its core, is a citizenship for the virtual world, engaging in all aspects of society from politics to ecommerce to connection via social media (AGParts Education, 2021).
Digital citizenship involves responsibly interacting with technology, the internet, and other users. Each digital citizen should strive to adhere to the 9 principles of digital citizenship, which provide a framework for appropriate online behavior (AGParts Education, 2021).
Different approaches to digital citizenship
Unidimensional approach to digital citizenship
The unidimensional approach can be understood as taking one single element of digital citizenship as a criterion for a certain subject matter on the internet (Choi & Cristol, 2021). However, this perspective often overlooks other critical elements like civic engagement, critical thinking, digital rights, and the systemic factors that shape online environments. Whereas a more comprehensive, multidimensional view would encompass a wider range of skills and responsibilities needed for meaningful participation in the digital world.
Multidimensional approach to digital citizenship
Unlike the unidimensional approach, this method will take multiple aspects into account, such as media literacy skills and critical thinking, making it a more reliable approach (Choi & Cristol, 2021).
Image source: Choi et al. (2017)
Choi et al. (2017) has developed a reliable and valid digital citizenship scale model based on 5 levels of digital citizenship complexity: technical skills, local/global awareness, networking agency, critical perspective, and Internet political activism. Ranking the complexity of digital citizenship from technical level to critical perspective of the user themselves.
Intersectionality framework
Intersectionality is a framework for understanding how various elements of a person's identity intersect, leading to distinct experiences of both discrimination and privilege (Taylor, 2019). For example, a white lesbian woman might be discriminated against for being a woman (that is sexism) and for being a lesbian. Moreover, a Black woman would be discriminated against for their skin color on top of shared traits of a white woman. That is my simplified analogy of intersectionality.

Reality show, managing online image and scandals
Reality TV is a genre that is designed to evoke discussion and shared opinions, not only in terms of judging the participants’ behaviors. but also by examining the authenticity of what they are watching. The discourse is not confined to homes and workplaces but also on online forums, web comments, and social media (Deller, 2020).

'Anh Trai Say Hi,' a phenomenon among Vietnamese media, is a reality music show where 30 participants will go through the process of refining themselves through each round to have the opportunity to appear in the winning band lineup.
The show features a dynamic lineup of 30 participants, blending established icons in today’s music industry with promising rising stars and micro-celebrities. This star-studded mix has captured a vast audience, drawing viewers from traditional TV screens to other social platforms.
Managing participants' online image
In this day and age, when everything is interconnected, these participants also utilize social platforms (i.e., Facebook and Instagram) to build their brand image and personality and strengthen the connection with the audience. There is a perception that internet stars, such as reality stars or idols, should remain in touch with their amateur, humble roots in order to appear authentic (Deller, 2020, p. 166).
Image source: Anh Trai Say Hi Vie Channel
This process also offers celebrities potential access to audience opinion without having it pre-filtered for them, also shifting the audience opinion toward a participant (Deller, 2020). Through these behind-the-scenes videos, the audience can observe the 'backstage' version of celebrity presentation.
Scandal surrounding Negav
During the live show of 'Anh Trai Say Hi,' Negav, one of the show's participants, has stated loudly to the audience and specifically to his mom that he has made the right decision to drop out and pursue music (Tuyet, 2024). After the live show has ended, the news has hit every social platform and received a plethora of negative reactions from the netizens, with a consensus opinion that 'a public figure should never encourage their audience to drop out.'. In my opinion, as a celebrity with a core audience of teenagers, you should be mindful of how much influence you have on your fans, and you should be held accountable for your actions.

Since the scandal happened, he has stopped all of his projects for 3 to 4 months to alleviate the negativity surrounding his name, though he did make an appearance in the 'Say Hi Never Say Goodbye' concert in Hanoi. The decision to reappear on a live concert when he has not cleared his scandal has once again reignited the negativity toward him and the production company.
In conclusion, Negav's continued presence on television ultimately depends on the audience's approval. As long as a significant number of viewers support him, he will remain on the screen; only a complete withdrawal of that support would lead to his disappearance.

Welcome to Tumblr and Blogging
What is Tumblr? A brief introduction of Tumblr.
Tumblr is a social media microblogging site founded in 2007 by an American developer, David Karp. The site is notable for its customizability, allowing for a variety of content, including images, text, music, and short-form blog posts (Matthias, 2024). Once users follow an individual, their posts are displayed on their dashboard. On the site, fandoms (the community that surrounds a TV show, game, or book) have become main contributors (Hillman et al., 2014, p. 286).
Selfie & Selfie culture
According to Oxford English Dictionary (2023), selfie is defined as photograph that one has taken of oneself, with smartphone or webcam and shared via social media. The individuals who take selfies are most likely adolescent, and female (Reif et al., 2022). Selfie has become a genre of visual self-presentation with its own method of storytelling, representational techniques and poses (Reif et al., 2022).

Selfie culture has emerged as a natural result of the development of smartphones and social media. As technology advances, people are connected to the online space more than ever and sharing pictures of themselves online. The trend started off simply as an action of taking a photo of themselves and posting it online, but over time, it has become a method to show off and a race to have the best selfie among your friends.
Over time, selfies are no longer about the 'self,' but they are now about the engagement and the interaction you receive when posting them online. As a result, social media users will alter their body image, posting selfies more frequently to compensate for the fear of receiving less (positive) user feedback (Reif et al., 2022, p. 4).
Desire and Digital gaze
Authenticity bind is a term describing the pressure on women to share private information on social media in order to present authentic (Reif et al., 2022, p. 4). Social media often rewards certain aesthetic or provocative images with positive reactions. Over time, the desire for validation can encourage users to push boundaries and share increasingly explicit content. Tumblr, as a social platform, is tolerating NSFW (not safe for work) content and allowing it to exist in a sense of a community (Ashley, 2019, p.359). Although I have to give credit to Tumblr for its transparency and inclusion for marginalized groups. It still raises the question of 'Where to draw the lines between art, self-expression, and self-objectification?'.

An introduction to my blog
Hi everyone, I'm Minh, an advertising student at Swinburne Vietnam. This is my take on the Tumblr blog weekly assignment, and also a semi-personal space for me to rant about topics related to this unit.🗣️🗣️🗣️
▸I have an unhealthy obsession with mechanical keyboards, as during my free time, I will spend it by browsing keyboards on Facebook Marketplace and watching reviews on YouTube. Personally, I think anyone that uses the computer daily should invest in one too. 🤑 It will 100% elevate your typing experience and also make your workspace more aesthetically pleasing!!!

▸My current favorite artist is Tyler, The Creator. I love his music, his whimsy personality and the energy that he bring during live performance.

▸I also regularly do street photography, I have a naturally observant nature and enjoy paying attention to the trivial things in life that others might overlook 🤓.
