First of all, thank you so much for 300+ followers?! I never expected this blog to blow up so much! I’m glad the sealism community is still here :-3

Some updates:

I volunteered with a marine mammal rehabilitation last year during harbor seal pupping season and got to work with seal pups! I mostly cleaned their cubes, the facility, laundry, dishes, feeding prep, and feeds/ restraining during feeds. This means that, yes, I got to hold seal pups!! The absolute dream….

They were so soft and velvety and felt like tiny little puppies. They were sooooo f***ing cute ahhhh. I won’t be sharing the name of the organization or any of the pictures I have from volunteering for their privacy, as I want to continue to work with this incredible place sometime in the future.

I also got a tattoo!! Of… you guessed it…. Seals!

It’s my first tattoo ever and the experience was perfect. I loved my artist and process! The price was great and the product… to die for🦭

I’ve been busy attending my freshman year at college and I’m heading into my sophomore year in August. It’s super hard to keep up with posting seal content daily or regularly during the school year so I haven’t been able to log on at all.

However, know that I am a true sealist and still actively consume seal content in my free time. I even have a pretty impressive seal collection already!

Hi! In your post about monk seals, the picture is the pup on the beach intrigued me.

The pup is green around the nostrils. So you have any idea why?

Seals constantly have mucus coming from their nostrils just like us humans do. The color of the crusted snot in this photo is likely from bacteria/environment. Nothing to be scared of! Seals can be kinda gross sometimes 🦭 all the more relatable…

i am very sad to be writing this update (CW: animal death) :(

recently more than 2,500 caspian seal corpses washed ashore in russia on the caspian coasts. the cause of death is unknown but they’re saying it’s of natural causes?? i’ll leave some articles. there are 70,000 seals left but russia argues theres more.

these small seals are found in the brackish caspian sea. these seals are currently endangered :( a caspian seal adult eats about a metric ton of fish per year!!! woah!!! they dive shallow and for small periods of time, usually only abt 160ft for 1 minute. they have pollution, natural predators, and viruses to blame for their decreasing population. they decrease by 3-4% every year :(( do u like the caspian seal?

seal of the day: leopard seal. now full disclosure i’m scared shitless of these seals. they’re known to be very territorial and are carnivorous- they even eat other seals :<…. they straight up look like dinosaurs?! a newborn leopard seal pup averages around 66 lbs! let me know what u think of these seals

seal of the day: ross seal :3

they are related to the crabeater seals, weddell seals, and leopard seals. they only live in the subarctic and weirdly on the southern coast of australia. their eyes are 7cm in diameter. they have the shortest fur out of any other seal. the ross seal is the least well known, as well as the smallest and least abundant of pinnipeds.

here are some sea lions that i recently visited in san francisco!!!

could u explain the difference between seals and sea lions ? :o

the noticeable difference are seals have inverted ears (holes behind the eyes) and sea lions have ears (sticking out on their head). seals have blubber and are more rotund in their figure. sea lions are slimmer and more defined in their neck, head, and body. sea lions have bigger front flippers and they actually have moveable hips, which allows them to mobilize well on land. seals hips are fused to their spine so their flippers can’t move other than to swim. it’s hard to explain but i’ll find some pics! u can see their bone structure pretty well and hopefully some differences. my fav are seals ofc ^___^ also sea lions are sometimes called eared seals and seals are called earless seals or true seals. hope this helped :0 lmk if u have any more questions :3

researching eared seals/sea lions makes me sad :( theyre a lot more endangered than the earless seals,,, i might take a break for a bit n post some classic true seals. 4 my sanity 🦭

seal of the day: japanese sea lion

content warning: graphic descriptions of animals bodies post death

sadly these eared seals went extinct in the 1970s :( they inhabited the japanese sea and surrounding areas. a text from the 18th century said that their meat “was not tasty” and instead was used as oil for oil lamps. their organs were used for expensive medicine, whiskers as pipe cleaners, and skin for leather (yes really.) over hunting caused their population to go from 300 japanese sea lions in 1915 to only a few dozen in the 1930s. over hunting and damage to their habitat from world war 2 is to blame for their extinction. i’m sorry we failed you, japanese sea lions :( what are ur thoughts on this otariidae?

sorry for late post today >\\\< these bad bois r huuuge only walruses and elephant seals are bigger pinnipeds. male sea lions r bigger w thicker necks than their female counterparts. they live in coastal subarctic areas. they gather in groups of up to 12 to catch prey. sometimes they eat northern fur seal pups, harbor seal pups, and sea otter pups :( there’s record of these seals going “psychotic” and killing and eating their own pups?! the stellar sea lions are the largest of the eared seals. what are ur thoughts on the stellar sea lion *o* they seem * a little * unhinged to me… lol….

seal of the day: northern fur seal !

these seals r. SO SILLY!!!!! the silliest. they are eared seals. their population is vulnerable- one classification away from being endangered :( im worried abt the eared seals!! we must protect them. they r found in the north pacific. young seals can be prey to arctic foxes! male northern fur seals breed in harems of women (yes really, as do most seals). the top right picture is a male and his harem. what do u think about the northern fur seals? :3

seal of the day: galapagos fur seal!

yes we r moving on to the eared seals! these cute seals have a lifespan of 22 years in the wild. unfortunately they are currently endangered :< . galapagos fur seals are the smallest of the eared seals! mothers recognize their pups by smell and sound- isn’t that cute :3 unlike earless seals that are weaned off milk 4-6 weeks after birth, fur seals can be weaned 18 months after birth! weaning can be delayed even 2 to 3 years if conditions are poor. because of this there is often sibling rivalry and fighting for milk! young pups with older siblings have an 80% chance of dying due to this :< one event that really hurts the galapagos seal population is El Niño. these seals hunt for fish, shellfish, and other crustaceans at night as it is easier to catch. the interesting thing about these seals is that they have almost no predators! other fur seal species are prey to sharks and orcas, but these predators are rare in the galapagos seal habitat. the migration paths of these predators do not cross these fur seals path! there are an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 of these seals currently. what do u think about the galapagos fur seal? 🦭

look at these cuties! they r named after their spotted coat. they can b mistaken as a harbor seal but they r different ! spotted seals have 34 teeth :3 they live in arctic & sub arctic waters. they were once threatened with extinction but are now labeled as least concern! what do u think abt the spotted seal?

seal of the day: crabeater seal

these seals r found on icey arctic coasts. there are an estimated 7 to 75 MILLION crabeater seals. insane. they’re the most abundant seal species. this is because of the krill they eat in the south ocean. (they are also called krilleater seals). they have slimmer bodies opposed to other seals & pointed snouts. these seals “colonized” antarctica 15-25 million years ago. they herd in groups of 100s, even 1,000. they have wandered the furthest inland than any other seal for some reason? maybe they’re trying to evolve? lock ur doors in case a crabeater breaks in… or? unlock them? up to you LOL. what do u think of these silly crabeater seals?
