it's crazy how much abbot we get in his first 3 minutes on screen. first thing we learn about him is he's suicidal. the first thing. the first shot of him on screen is him taking a drag of a metaphorical cigarette and being like "the horrors sent forth at the beckoning of god eclipse all ration and reason" and literally 15 seconds later the man is leaning over the edge and giggling "cant believe you guys are making me jump hahaha!!" then in the elevator down he looks like an einstein stunt double all of a sudden and is giving robby the run down on all the cases they have and he fucking ends it with "god help you all. good luck with that." that is a direct quote. he said those words. abbot and robby step off the elevator and a naked patient runs past him and he has the audacity to look surprised. he looks like who the fuck is that guy as if he didn't just admit and treat that man. abbot just blinks and is like "my circus and monkeys no longer, I forfeit my crown". eyes on the prize, he has to finish up his little tasks and lets his spine fuse into a parabolic arc as he's hunched over a computer and then he IMMEDIATELY tries to take mel's whimsy out back to put two between the eyes. TWO. not one, because one isn't enough. he needs two just in case whimsy escapes. and by god it does.

trans!robby who figures it out during his second year of med school but has a really hard time finding a name that suits him and doesn't want to be constantly telling classmates and professors new names.
robby who ends up crying curled up in jack's chest late one night after a draining afternoon working on a group project where everyone kept calling him by the wrong name. and he knows they don't know, and he knows it's his fault, and he knows he doesn't really have a name right now, but it's hard and it hurts and he wants it to stop.
jack whose heart breaks while he holds robby together. so he thinks and he thinks and he thinks. and he comes up with robby, because it's easy, it holds no connection to his deadname, it requires little justification and he can keep using it long after he settles on his new name.
jack who comes with him to get a new haircut the next morning.
jack who has a hand on his shoulder while he tells their friends.
jack who goes with robby to talk to all his professors and help explain.
jack who calls him robby every chance he gets and encourages everyone else to do the same.
jack who helps him try out new names and is always coming up with new ideas.
jack who starts using mike and robby interchangeably when robby finally settles on his name because robby says both are him.

Theres a scale of how much of an "er cowboy" each attending is and this is it.
Tumblr media
John Shen Textbook. He has the guidelines memorised to the point of knowing the sentences backwards. He did NOT need Robby to explain the ACVPU scale. He sticks to what is proven to work, and does it with no effort needed - quickly and efficiently.
Michael Robinavitch Seems to be pulling off some risky moves like pushing meds before labs but actually knows what works from his own experience. He sees guidelines as that, a guide, but not something that is set in stone. He improvises where need be.
Jack Abbot(t) The definition of those words. Is there a "proven" and "standard" method for doing something? Probably. But that doesn't mean its the only way to do things. He is the one who believes a video laryngoscope is a waste of time when old school works just as well. High end equipment exists, and can be used, but is not necessary. He gave the Butterfly Ultrasound to Mel because its useful, but he doesn't necessarily NEED it to make the same diagnosis.

The realism of Robby being a little bit of an unintentional misogynist is so, so important to me. Like he is a good boss and a great teacher, he is friends with women and works with women and teaches women and respects women greatly. And yet—it’s Langdon, and then Whitaker, who Robby adopts as his mentees. It’s David, not the girls on the kill list, who Robby prioritizes care for. It’s the dad accused of grooming his daughter who Robby refuses to report, while informing the authorities about the mother drugging him without a second thought. He reams Langdon out for berating Santos, but doesn’t check in on Santos until Langdon refuses to let it go and Robby becomes suspicious of there being an actual problem.
And obviously we are seeing Robby on the worst day of life, and maybe even calling him a “little bit of a misogynist” is a bit too much because he’s not, really. But he does have ingrained biases and he does seem to only be able to fully see himself in and completely empathize with other men. And that is just. So true of even the nicest, kindest, most wonderful and feminist men I know.

hello I would like to present the idea that John Shen is Like That because he dealt with peak COVID times in the ED. there's not other east Asian doctors (at least that we see in the show) so he doesn't have someone to commiserate with about the racism and bullshit (the stories I could tell you and I was just. a university student) so now nothing can possibly faze him
Oh, absolutely. May I add:
Shen doesn’t talk about those months. Not because he doesn’t remember them - he remembers everything, although he'd rather not. The hallway vents that wheezed like dying lungs. The phone calls he had to make when families weren’t allowed in the room. The way N95s dug raw lines into his skin that didn’t fade for weeks.
But what he hadn't anticipated was how visible he suddenly became, for all the wrong reasons. Patients flinching when he walked into rooms. A nurse (not from their hospital, just rotating) asking if he was "really from here." Someone saying, "We wouldn’t be in this mess if people like you had stayed home."
There were no other East Asian doctors working the ED. No one to turn to and say, "Did that just happen?" So Shen didn’t. He just got quieter. More efficient. More withdrawn. He considered talking to Abbot about it, maybe with Robby, but what would they really do? Would they even get it? Would they have time to listen with everything else going on, with Adamson dying, with Abbot taking on another shift after working his third double this week?
He started speaking only when necessary. He became known for never losing his cool, for being unshakable, someone who couldn’t be rattled, who somehow got a vented patient admitted to the ICU after an attending had shouted that there wasn’t a single bed left. People called it professionalism. Composure. Miracle work. But it wasn’t any of those things. Shen had just learned to pick his battles.
