if there was such a thing as a reward for best simp, or mvs ( most valued simp ) it would undoubtedly, wholeheartedly go out to newly promoted SOLDIER first class, zack fair.

no because who were you to pass him in the hallway, clad from head to toe in the typical, but ever flattering turk getup- complete with fingerless gloves and heels, only giving a smirk and wink for a greeting?

as if he hadn’t saved you a few days ago when the genesis copies were rampaging loveless avenue in the dead of night.

“oh shit, fuck- look out!” zack remembered bellowing out, launching forward with his standard issued blade to fend off what could have been a particularly fatal blow. for a SOLDIER like himself, it might have been nothing, but for normal people.. that was a hospital trip.

staggering back two steps before his face could meet with a pole that, by the way, looked so suspiciously out of place. seriously, who was the architect behind these designs?

in any case, the newly named first almost bought it, all because of lingering thoughts about somebody he almost definitely had no chance with.

and of all the people to have caught his slip up, it had to be shinra’s infamous source of gossip.

kunsel blew a whistle, shaking his head. “boy oh boy.. you’re in deeper than deep, buddy.”

jolting out of his brief trance, the spiky haired male whirled around to look at his friend, pink spreading across his cheeks. “w-what’re you talking about?! i’m nowhere deep, i’m in the shallows, of course! i don’t have time to be anywhere over the knees!” a relationship, let alone crush, amidst the chaos that had broken out only a few months ago? absolutely not, no way! not with his mentor gone rogue, a friend of his mentor that was looking for vengeance, and a grieving sephiroth.

it was the worst time for an office crush, but he’d be liar to confess to anything less.

and the second class knew that.

“right, right. but shallow waters are in between the sand and deep, man. only a matter of time before you come to terms with your crush.. but hey — that’s if you can even land a badass like y/n.” he mused out, folding his arms over his violet top as he leaned against the same pole he’d nearly kissed.

zack let out a groan of annoyance, slouching in defeat. “okay- you got me. but c’mon, you and i both know i can’t be distracted here! seph’s counting on me — i can’t be loverboy over here, i gotta y’know..” he gestured awkwardly to the debriefing room behind them, pursing his lips together. “be ready for when they need me..”

it was a pathetic excuse, to say the least, and kunsel knew that well enough.

but he also knew something else.

“yeah? well — you might wanna check your mail and head there soon, think they just may be calling you in.” he winked, despite the presence of his helmet, moving his arms behind him to push off the post. “see you around, loverboy!” with that, his fellow colleague and friend waved him off, leaving only confusion in his wake.

because a mail, really? he hadn’t even felt-

..okay, nevermind that thought.

not even bothering to look at his phs because kunsel was almost always right, zack made an elective to head for the room in question.

perhaps it was a new lead of sorts or a real explanation on why the hell angeal had up and left with genesis.

instead, he found lazard, tseng.. and you.

“um- you wanted to see me?”

lazard offered a cordial smile, leaning forward on his interlocked knuckles. “yes, zack. we just found some new information on where genesis and hollander might be held up. tseng here has several of his turks either following leads or defusing some skirmishes caused by copies, and one of them will be accompanying you on your next mission.” he elaborated, gesturing to the turk in question that was evidently younger than tseng, but no less striking. “meet y/n.”

so this was what kunsel meant.

before he could hope to answer, your lips parted first, a slight curl to the corners. “i’d say we have met once before, director. zack fair turned up some time ago in sector eight and aided myself along with my colleagues.” you spoke up, leaning against the wall. “a rather exceptional first, i’d reckon. you made a fine choice promoting him.” and definitely not because there were hardly any firsts left.

heat crept to zack’s cheeks, mako tinted hues vanishing and reappearing frantically behind a series of blinks as he looked between all three faces.

were his ears deceiving him? praise from you?

the blond let out a soft chuckle, pushing his glasses up. “did he? how noble. well then, you two can get going. tseng, if you would fill them in on the details of their mission?”

offering a nod, the leader of the turks held out two sheets of paper for the pair to take, stalling a little less than the director had. “we have a lead that points us to modeoheim, but more evidence is needed to be sure. go back to that site where you and sephiroth found hollander and genesis during the invasion. see if there’s anything to confirm their whereabouts.” he answered calmly, bringing a hand to his hip.

zack took the mission in his gloved palms with knitted brows, glazing over the content. of all the places, why modeoheim? not only was it backwater, but the place was all frost and snow- practically a cold wasteland.

perfect to get away and set up a base, he supposed.

a glance towards your direction revealed little information, as you read over the sheet with minimum effort nor surprise. perhaps it was a turk thing, zack wasn’t all too sure.

“understood,” you answered curtly, folding and pocketing the mission in your blazer before turning to your new partner for the day. “let’s go, there aren’t many choppers left. unless you’d prefer public transport.” you winked, not bothering to wait up on the awestruck first.

gosh, he really needed to stop spacing out..

but how could he when you only continued to surprise and leave him utterly dumbfounded?

with a haphazard goodbye to both directors, the spiky haired male stumbled out to pursue your trail, catching up with little difficulty. his enhancements made it quite easy to do, but you weren’t exactly speeding off either.

“so- uh.. do all turks know how to pilot?” he asked once you’d entered the elevator, smiling awkwardly. “is it some kinda requirement? orrr just a preference?”

pressing the button for the helipad, you let out a hum, leaning against the bar. “maybe a bit of both. it’s a good skill to have if you’re ever in a bind, or nice if you wanna avoid delays and traffic.” which explained the punctuality of turks.

zack never quite thought of it that way — he knew at best how to drive a car and ride a motorcycle, but it wasn’t often that he used either. most of the times someone else either drove or flew them.

although riding the bike would be cool to do more often, but there seemed like there was little time these days for any leisure activities.

“that sounds pretty cool.” he finally said with a chuckle, rubbing his nape. “guess SOLDIER thought only cars — but mostly motorcycles were important to know how to ride.” he joked, sending a small grin your way, to which you had surprisingly actually laughed to. huh.

had you actually thought him to be funny??

“SOLDIER’s all about image and style, you guys are heroes and display that. us turks are a little more behind the scenes, it’s our jobs to be versed in, well, everything.” you elaborated, smiling as you stepped out of the elevator to approach the helicopter. “maybe i can teach you sometime, if we make it out of this mess genesis made for us all.”

zack found himself completely floored for the third or fourth time now; you wanted to teach him? to actually go out of your schedule to do something like that? for him?

“you’d do that??”

another laugh left your lips at the question, eyes softening up for a second as you hopped into the driver’s seat. “like i said, if and when this mess is cleaned up. which right now, we should be getting to, pretty boy.”

as if the air was knocked from his lungs, the first nearly found himself choking on pretty much nothing. just what the hell were you doing to him?? “you- you think i’m pretty??”

“that’s what i said, isn’t it?” you chuckled back, placing on your headset as you flicked the necessary switches needed to power the vehicle. “now c’mon, strap yourself in, can’t have you flying out of here before take off.” now that would definitely be embarrassing.

and that was the last thing zack wanted for your first mission together as he quickly did as told, making sure to close the door before sitting in the passenger’s seat.

man, never in a million years did he think he would be a passenger.. prince?

it was a strange thought, but not unwelcome.

a silence that wasn’t all too awkward befell you for a handful of minutes, mostly because zack was distracted by their view of midgar from above. man, he hadn’t seen it since his arrival from gongaga back when he became a cadet. it was bigger than he remembered.

meanwhile you were more than comfortable to keep silent, not having much to say anyway.. but there was.. something on your mind.

moreover, something you had not gotten the chance to say.

“that time- in sector eight,” you spoke up, drawing his attention without much wait as he turned to look over at you — kind of.. like a puppy. it was endearing, you almost had to stop yourself from laughing. “i never did get the chance to thank you before we parted ways — so, thanks for the save.” you smiled, looking over at him briefly before looking ahead of you once more.

if zack wasn’t shocked before, good grief.. the hits just kept on coming and he truly was not sure what he could do.

that being said he elected to voice the first thought that came to mind.

“would you wanna go out- after this?”

..which didn’t exactly imply that it would be the most intelligent or ideal response to give, but here he was.

you were more than less surprised yourself at the question, having expected it to come soon, as it always had with people you worked with.. but not quite so randomly.

it was.. cute.

“there might be a cool movie we can catch- or uh, just something to eat! y’know, missions work up an appetite after all and-”

“yes,” you cut in before he could ramble on for days on end, finally letting out the laugh you were holding in. “we can go out after this — but, that does depend on your performance and success.” you joked — well, for the most part. a flop would lead to an earful from your colleagues, and you weren’t all too eager to hear reno’s nonsensical jabs.

zack was mostly prepared for rejection, but upon hearing you agree instead, a bright smile overtook the initial awkward grin as he raised his fist in victory. “oh yeah! i’ll do so good, i’ll have you wanting to go on a second date next week — just you wait!”
