A rare #Bergmanfilm not written by him, but by #HerbertGrevenius based on some short stories by #BirgitTengroth, the lesbian content was arguably why this film wasn’t released in the U.K. until 2004. Caused a spot of bother for the Swedish censors at the time too.

While the gender-bending is tame by today’s standards (and those of the 1982 #BlakeEdwards/#JulieAndrews version) it’s still a fun old German musical with cross dressing galore.

#SylviaScarlett (1935) Young Sylvia (#KatharineHepburn) disguises herself as Sylvester in order to look after her fleeing father.

There is much Hepburn cross-dressing in this (and if that doesn’t recommend it, I don’t know what does!) & the scene with her in a dress with long hair was added to make her character more relatable after early audiences hated the film.

This all-female cast movie got into a whole lot of trouble in its early years: Originally banned in the US, it only got released because Eleanor Roosevelt recognised its importance; when the Nazi’s rose to power they tried to burn every copy, then the playwright (who wrote the original script the films based on) was assassinated by the Nazi’s during the war.

Famous for Dietrich’s singer wearing a tuxedo & kissing a woman. The scene was added on her suggestion & wouldn’t have survived the censor without her decision to take a flower from the woman’s hair & give it to Cooper, which meant if they cut the kiss the rest made no sense.
