Could you make a pink panther villager? I think it would look super cool. The pink panther himself would appreciate it, haha.

I really like that idea! I haven’t been actively playing ACNL or creating custom villagers for the last several months, but if and when I come out of retirement I’ll definitely keep a pink panther villager on my short list of things to try.

Hey, the rom texture guide you linked from jingle fruit doesn't exist anymore. Is there a way you can make a new guide for making custom villagers?

I’ve been getting this question a lot lately! I don’t know that I’ll have time/motivation to sit down and write an exhaustive guide anytime in the near future, but I can offer a few different resources that might be of some help. As for the actual setup process (installing CFW on your 3ds) this is the guide I always reference, though I recall hearing about alternative methods (which I know absolutely nothing about). As for the actual design element of creating custom villagers, @mayorfuu has a guide on how to edit textures using your paint program of choice. @jinglefruit still has a guide on the rom folder layout if you are trying to locate a particular file that you can find here.

I’ve been really out of the loop with the latest developments in ROM hacking, so I probably am not the best person to write a guide at this point (it was many years ago when I first started rom hacking and the method that I used is now completely outdated and obsolete). Hopefully some of the links I provided will at least be of some help to people who are still interested in texture hacking.

Do you still have your Halloween Dream-Town? I would love to see your adorably spooky creations in-game!

Hi! I actually never got around to making a spooky town (although it’s true that I have made my share of Halloween themed custom villagers). I started to make one a few years’ back but I eventually ended up scrapping the project. Perhaps if I can find the time and the motivation to resume my regular ACNL activities I will give it another go! (Unfortunately any spooky custom villagers I’ve made would not be visible to visiting players however).

I've been trying to get an edited script (villager names) and texture edits to work, but I can't find any answers online :( could you please tell me how you put your edited files in the luma3ds folder? I have CFW and luma3ds v9.1 with patching enabled. could the welcome amiibo update have ruined this? thank you,,

The WA update wouldn’t effect this; it might just be a matter of the folders not being set up properly. You just have to make sure that the pathway is *exactly* the same on your SD card as it in the romfs folder. 

For example, for the script file, It should be luma > titles > [GAME ID (different depending on which region your game is)] > romfs > Script > Str

Edited villagers would be set up as follows: For example, for the script file, It should be luma > titles > [GAME ID (different depending on which region your game is)] > romfs > Npc > Normal > Model

Just make sure that your SD card is set up properly and your textures *should* appear. If you are still having issues, you can message me and I can see if I can help you diagnose the problem.

Custom Plushie Villager Collection

As requested, here is a compilation of all the plushie-style custom villagers that I’ve made over the years (some a bit more loosely than others). From top to bottom: Scraps, Button, Motley, Tweed, Twill, Little Stars Mint unicorn (Sanrio), Paisley, Velvet (OC by @mimiteyy ), Miss Bear (Sanrio), Barney, Patch, Tigg, Sheila, and Bah Koo (based on an actual plush from my childhood).

Hello, I'm new on tumblr. How do you get pink perfect apples? What hacks do you use?

Hello and welcome! The pink apples that I posted are texture hacks that I made myself and aren’t a legitimate part of the game. I did this by hacking New Leaf’s ROM data (i.e., extracting all the game’s rom files), editing the files using a paint program, and importing them over the existing files using Ohana. I then put my custom files on my SD card and use custom firmware (luma3ds) to read my modified files.

Greetings! ( prepare for a long paragraph 😂) I understand That you’re a fairly large animal crossing blog and I was wondering if you have any tips and tricks with getting back into the game. I’ve played since I was around 5-6 years old and I’ve recently stopped playing as much, I was just wondering if you have also anything that could help me with my ‘hacking’ I have everything I need I’m just a bit confused. Finally, how do you get custom colours and things like that? Thanks! Anon x

Hello, anon! For me, the thing that really prolonged the life of the game to a *big* degree was texture hacking. Prior to that I usually amused myself by creating different themed towns. But as far as hacking goes, it really depends what exactly you want to hack in the game. Texture hacks like the ones that I post here on my blog require that you have custom firmware (CFW) installed on your 3ds - that’s how I’m able to recolour the game’s components and create new villagers.

Do you not share your villager textures?

Not typically, especially when it comes to my OCs. I shared a couple of the ‘forgotten’ AC villagers long ago and meant to upload the entire lot, but since most of them returned for the WA update there wasn’t much reason to. But generally I only share textures with friends/family/people I know and don’t distribute them publicly. 

I am, however, still open to taking commission requests for anyone who has an OC or design idea for a custom villager of their own (and who has CFW installed on their 3ds of course.)

Seems like it’s been a hot minute since I’ve had any new texture hacks to show, so here is a new villager for your viewing pleasure. This is Halley the peppy cosmic bunny. She’s actually one of a small number of galactic/starry themed villagers that I’ve made (some others being Orion, Nova, Merlin, and Sapphire), but she is arguably the most ‘kawaii’ of the lot. 🌟

I’ve made quite a few sky blue/cloudy villagers in recent days, so here’s a villager that deviates from that color palette but is still in keeping with the theme. This is Eve, the sunset eagle, who happens to be blending in quite nicely with her customized room and modified wallpaper. I think that sunset colors are beautiful as a general rule, and I must say that she wears them well.

I made a fluffy little cloud pupperoo, tentatively named Cotton. Once again, I found myself conflicted between two different eye designs, so I tested them both out in-game...and I’m still no closer to deciding which one I prefer  🤔
