Geometry (first render) from Silvia Micevi on Vimeo.
Brief: Produce seven, one second, pieces of animation and a final three second finishing piece. Today we we're introduced to a number of After Effects transitions (Venetian Blinds, CC Slant, Wiggler) layer masks and the process of using expressions to script effects. All art work was first produced in Illustrator. For a more dynamic composition, I aim to reproduce the same illustrator outcomes on individual layers meaning that, once they are imported to After Effects, each shape can be animated separately.

Publishing Workshop 1 - The Zine
The invention of the printing press in 1440 broke the monopoly on printing and further advances in reproduction techniques, following the industrial revolution, has resulted in widely accessible on demand printing. With this came the rise of self-publishing culture offering a huge variety of formats for zine production.
Definitions of Zine
A small self-distributed print run.
Motivated self expression rather than profit.
Outside the mainstream.
Required no special equipment or knowledge.
Low budget DIY culture.
Nearly immediate publishing.
The seminar task was a collaborative group zine on the subject of the seminar. Our group dynamic focused on dissecting, comparing and contrasting opposing arguments concerning self-publishing delivered in the lecture. The two sides of to self -publishing; Barber vs Doctorow.
The group was in agreement with condensing information down to simple illustration, colour and hand-drawn typography. Committing to a minimalist theme, I have produced a front cover icon; the abstracted term "self-publishing" taking the form of a question mark. This not only serves as the title of the workshop but also visually presents a question. Ros Barber argues that to her publishing is poverty, that too much time is wasted on PR leaving no room to work with and learn from more experienced designers. Consequently work on little experience, guidance and low budget can look amateur. She claims that the promise of 70% profit, there is often no revenue at all and artists are left at a financial loss. In my contribution I showcased this figure above mirrored lettering reading "nothing" to imply the lack of security self-publishing can cause.
Meanwhile, Doctorow opposes this view with criticisms that 90% of earnings are taken by book sellers and publishers when printing with large companies. Giving away free or cheap wholesale work through systems such as Humble Bundle can bring exposure and in return revenue. Special edition releases at a higher cost and Kickstarter funds can more than make up for the 90% taken by publishers.
Feedback & Response
Group discussion suggests further individual development based on today's collaboration. Key themes to consider are consistency in style, a flow from page to page, a reflection on printing techniques and visual representation of publishing strategy.
So far I have began to digitally process my own part of the group zine.
