Introduction
Carmen Carangi
Every night I sit in my bed and try to drown out the noise. The yelling,the screaming,the constant chaos.
My foster parents are constantly fighting and it’s taking a bit of a toll on me.
It was obviously Janine who hit the floor crying. The thud shook the house, Randy’s probably kicking her again.
Times like this were fueled by the animosity towards me. They argue constantly but whenever someone questions their parenting all hope for peace goes out the window.
Sometimes a person is thrown out with it.
My teacher was concerned about my life at home because of my “extremely introverted behavior”. Whatever that means.
She had the bright idea to send a note here for them to sign. That’s probably what started tonights fight and I know he’ll be in here soon.
Just as I predicted the door flew open. Randall stood tall with his thick leather belt in his hand.
The animalistic look in his eyes frightened me way more than the belt. As much as I wanted to plead my case and tell him that it wasn’t my fault, I knew better.
It’s always my fault.
"What the fuck is this!" He roared. The note was tossed at my feet. With my voice just above a whisper I simply said a note.
"From who?" He asked. "My teacher."
It looks like he’s processing that as if he didn’t already know. But I know the reality of the situation. The reality was, Randall was mentally preparing himself to hurt me.
It’s the thought that counts…. Not really.
"Read it." He spoke calmly. Too calm.
I picked up the paper and slowly began to read.
"Dear Mr. and Mrs.Stevens ,
Over the passed few months Carmen’s behavior has been less than normal. It’s not a problem but it’s something that you should look at. The children around her age are a bit more open and are willing to work with each other. Carmen sits in the corner and disappears when it’s time to participate in group activities. She stares at the wall for most of the day and doesn’t make eye contact. On the rare occasion that she does I see fear. That gives me reasons to assume that the many bruises and scars covering her aren’t from falling. Many of us have tried talking to her but she hasn’t spoken a word since she’s been here. We really don’t want to think that she’s being abused at home so we’re asking for you to come and meet with the Principal and I to discuss some things that could help Carmen.

My eyes hadn’t left the paper before his hand went across my face.
The paper was snatched away and my hair was tangled in his fist. Moments later there was a dent in the wall and a migraine brewing in my head. The side of my head began to leak down to my blood splattered gown.
A part of me felt like crying but I was in too much pain. When he let go of my hair I took a size-able portion of it with him. The back of my head hit the window on the other side of the room. I didn’t think it did but the shatter from the glass confirmed that suspicion.
A few kicks and punches after I felt my body giving out.
I can only assume the neighbors called the police because they barged through the door seconds later.
The blood loss is why I’m losing consciousness. I’m dizzy but I’m alert enough to hear the emts when the pulled me away from the house.
After that it became too hard. The nurse is trying but I can’t help but slip away.
"6 year old female in need of major medical attention NOW!"
The nurse spoke but I knew that I had already slipped away.
My grip on life was weak,it was finally time for me to let go.

"Ahhhhhh!" I screamed to my empty apartment. I was scared death but the time on the clock scared me even more.
7:38am
I had to be at work soon. Just as I started to get up my phone rang.
‘S.London.’
"Yes….?"
"Are you just now waking up?"
"No……………I went for a jog…"
"Well, Maxine isn’t coming in today and I want you to style her client. You need to be here by 10:30 sharp." She ordered and hung up. "Hmph." I huffed.
I hate rude people.
I got up and went to my bathroom to start my day.
