December 19th - Loki

Centuries ago the Asgardian king Odin led a battle against the Frost Giants and killed Laufey, the lord of Jotunheim. After he slew Laufey, Odin found a small child hidden the Frost Giant’s lair. The infant was Loki, son of Laufey, who had been kept hidden due to the giant’s shame over having sired such a small son. Odin took pity on the baby and decided to bring him back to Asgard and raise him as his own alongside his biological son, Thor. Young Loki possessed vast magical powers, including shapeshifting (which he used to appear as an Asgardian and hide his Jotunheim roots). Despite Odin’s best efforts to raise his sons as equals, Loki felt a great deal of alienation as well as a fierce envy toward his adoptive brother Thor. Thor was destined to be the King of Asgard and Loki concocted endless schemes to undermine his brother and take his place as the future king. Thor’s love for Midgard (Earth) led to the brothers’ feud spilling over into the human world. As such Loki would go on to have encounters with countless heroes and villains of the Marvel Universe. Loki has played a pivotal role in a number of the Marvel movies, where he has been portrayed by actor Tom Hiddleston. Loki first appeared in Journey Into Mystery Vol. 1 #85.
