one thing I really appreciate in the game is how it deals with Gustave's shutdown at the beginning. the fact Gustave doesn't say a word from the moment he gets separated from Maelle during the beach attack until the moment he meets Lune, how he doesn't bother with the lumina converter at all, and then the gun of course

But like, in another game he would have probably woken up and immediatly said something like "what happened? I need to find the others" (quest pop up) or had a dramatic breakdown immediatly on waking up, but no. he's silent, he's out of it, he's still in shock, going through the motions well enough to survive but he's not really processing. there are no unnatural little comments about the tutorials, no "oh a grapple point" or anything like that, and I really appriciate that. that the game allows us to marinate in the moment rather than pulling us away to do tutorializing

And he gets there, no flowers, no trees or nothing. Just a few rocks and a bunch of combed sand. And he's looking at it, he's like, "Maybe these rocks are like planets or countries." And he's like, "Oh, no. What if they're families? Or people?" And this garden is showing how spaced out everyone is from everybody else. How separated they are. How alone, right? And the only thing that's connecting them or touching them is this sand. And, wow. He's like, really moved. Like, really fucking moved by this. But I'm, like, standing here, so relieved, you know. Fucking really grateful. Because I think I've been looking at this all wrong. You're not one of the rocks? I think I'm the sand, man.
