It took a long time to clear out that hideout. But, a deal's a deal. The lights of the gym nearly blinded Pepper, but squinting through the pain, they could make out the sign on the door. The words "Power plant" were hastily scribbled out, and were written over with large, gaudy text reading "Super Zappy Wacky Fun Gym!!". Sigh. Of course that one would do something like this. He could not bear to be around people like her: overly upbeat, shouting, positive. He'd have to bear it, to get the ball rolling on the gym challenge. Mentally preparing to for the onslaught of emotion, they slipped through the door.

The first thing Pepper noticed was the loud sparks of electricty bounding across all the machines, much like their owners. Second, Pepper was face to face with a wall, closing off their path forward. Of course. Every gym had some kind of gimmick related to their type, and this time would be no different. Walking down the right corridor, a long-dormant emotion began to stir within them. The thrill of a good battle, of fighting with every last bit you've- No. He had to stay focused. He wasn't about to let it happen, again.

Pepper could hardly even blink before the first trainer was down. This was going to be easier than he thought. Behind the defeated trainer, they found.... a Voltorb? It looked odd, shaking rapidly as though it was-. Oh. That's the kind of gimmick they want to play. They dragged the Voltorb out in front of the entrance wall, plugged their ears, and-

BOOM

No. The- the- I have to-!!!

Pepper didn't even register that they were curled up in a ball afterwards, they got up, eyes glazed over, before snapping back. Behind the demolished wall, he could see another, and a third peeking over it. How bad would it be to turn back- No. They can't turn back now.

Many, many walls later..

Pepper slowly slipped through the gym doors again. After so many explosions, they had to take most of the day to just recover from the anguish. Stepping over the broken rubble felt like the corpses of the past, like- He was going to finish this. The stairs up to the gym leader was his salvation, from this gym, at least.

"Hi! You got rid of the team hideout for me, right? You know, I really wasn't expecting you t-"

"It's done. Can we battle now?"

"Wow, rude much? Doesn't matter, I'm not going easy on you just because you have 3 pokemon!"

At this, they threw their first pokemon, a Minun, down so hard it cracked the floor, triggering the Electric Field effect. Well, not for long. Lazily tossing out a Zigzagoon, they smirked. "No type effectiveness? Makes my job easier!" the soon-to-be-defeated gym leader taunted. Pepper ignored this, and called out to use Mud Sport. Mud splattered every inch of the field, destroying the homefield advantage. "Doesn't matter! I can still win!". Headbutt. Charge Beam. Headbutt. Encore. Hmph. Makes it all the easier to win. Headbutt. Minun down. "You may have gotten the best of little Minun, but you still have 5 more to go!" Geodude. Headbutt. Rollout. Headbutt. Rollout. Headbutt. SelfDestruc- Oh no. Both pokemon fainted, and the gym leader smirked. "Not so tough now, huh?" He really wished they would be quiet, already. Tossing out Slick, their goomy, they couldn't help but be reminded of that little kid on the forum.. he hoped Mint was doing well. The leader's Oricoro and Plusie fell quickly to Dragon Breath, but carelessly let Slick die to a Voltorb explosion. One on one. "You said you wanted a type effectiveness? Here." Cr*p, they were rubbing off on him. They sent out their second Zigzagoon, and the enemy Voltorb fell easily to a Mud Bomb. He won.

Standing over the leaders defeated team, Pepper couldn't help but feel energized. Maybe they could actually complete this stupid challenge.

"Here's your badge! I'm gonna take a nap" They bounded off, out the door.

He did it. Pinning the badge to their trainer card, they were ready to go for the next.
