"Some people interpret the questing beast as a description of the medieval mythological view on giraffes [...] Evidence of this is shown in the Arthuriana paper, showing that the beast comes from a mistranslation of the Arabic word Zaraffa." (Wikipedia)
I've seen this theory so many times and it will never not be the funniest possible origin for a mythical beast to me.
Either a giraffe somehow got loose in the British Isles at a point in history, and nobody knew what it was, or someone back then thought giraffes were the spawn of the devil.
In case you couldn't tell, my entire goal with this design is to make people as scared of cartoon giraffes as possible :)
You can find some more stuff here!

Bro, we are cooked. The knight that dogs the prince's shadow like a dark and silent wraith just knelt to press his forehead to the prince's hand. Yeah, now he's uttering a prayer whose recipient is ostensibly God but in reality is the deified version of the prince that exists only in his mind. Aaand the prince just caressed his cheek to preemptively grant him absolution. I gotta... I gotta get out of here.

That's really cool!! I love Arthuriana, I even have some loose elements of it in my worldbuilding project (as you might be able to tell from my name ^w^)
Do you have any tips for growing an audience? I'm just getting started out on Tumblr and I'm kinda just throwing my stuff out there for fun. At the very least, it's something of a backlog!

"Adventures are things that happen to other people. When they happen to me, it's only trouble."
The Great War was terrible for all sides.
But few were as horrifying as the Sonnenreich's ill-fated venture into Rholisia. The land of eternal winter was rich in resources, particularly old-world relics which could be mind, salvaged and reused. Thousands were sent into the frigid cold, seeking to establish a foothold.
Whilst initially successful, the offensive quickly ground to a halt as supply lines strained and logistics began breaking down. Then, one fateful night, all communications were cut off. Entire regiments were stranded without supplies or reinforcements. The war has ground to a screeching halt.
The Jaeger Corps were sent in to find out what happened to their troops. Dinadan was among them, a bearded vulturefolk serving as a sniper and recon specialist. What seemed like a simple assignment had taken a turn for the worst.
A new horror had been birthed in No Man's Land. A foetid presence from the lightless spaces between worlds - corrupting, encroaching upon the ashen snow. They would soon find themselves similarly cut off from their leadership, forced to navigate this treacherous frozen hell themselves.
Resources were scarce. With no logistics to speak of, they resorted to the time-honoured tradition of scavenging. For this, Dinadan was uniquely suited; vultures were scavengers by nature, and his biology allowed him to scrounge not only materials, but food. He was able to consume raw, rotting and diseased carrion - though the latter two were less common in the frozen wastes - and most importantly, bones. In a land where the desperate and ravenous picked the meat clean from every carcass, Dinadan was able to sustain themselves off the bones they left behind.
Perhaps it was this, combined with his training and resourcefulness, that led to him surviving the war. Yet no one could have prepared him for what came after.
Life after the war was chaotic. A furious public demanded answers, and an insular military apparatus attempted to obfuscate the truth. They bribed and threatened veterans to stay quiet, disseminated propaganda and misinformation, closed ranks. Dinadan would find himself restless, unable to fully reintegrate into civilian life. His dreams of pursuing a musical career stalled as he became aimless and depressed.
Deciding that inaction was worse than the consequences, he refused to stay quiet any longer. Like many veterans had before him, he entered an anonymous interview with journalists and reporters. He detailed his experiences, told them exactly what he was sent to do and what went wrong. No detail was spared; and for that, his life would now be in danger.
Fearing reprisal from the armed forces, he fled the country. He booked a ticket out East, trying to get as far away from Livadia as possible. Now he must contend with his new life in exile... and learn how to navigate the social dynamics, politics and culture of a foreign land.
✨ Personality ✨
Dinadan is of a sanguine-phlegmatic temperament. It surprises many that this hardened veteran is a laid-back, outgoing wisecracker; indeed, he seems more interested in being a minstrel than a soldier.
His two sides rear their respective heads whenever it is necessary. He has compartmentalised his 'work' and 'relaxed' lives; though he is loathe to be anything besides the latter. In truth, he hates his 'work', and does everything in his power to present as little more than a wandering bard.
And yet, he cannot truly escape the years of training and indoctrination. The soldier's life is second nature to him, and to his chagrin he still retains a sense of pride in his career.
Before the draft, he had wanted to become a musician. His mastery of his father's Rebec was his most prized skill, though his true talent lay in his voice. He sang beautifully, a melodious songbird destined to be admired; yet the callousness of war had a history of shattering destinies. He became just another cog in the marching machine, only breaking free after it had chewed him up and spat him back out into a world quite unlike the drills and discipline of army life.
At his core, Dinadan is a caring, gentle soul. Though the horrors persist in the theater of the mind, he keeps the love of humanity in his heart. Though a loose cog will never be rid of the purpose it was designed for, it is free from the machine, and can choose its own fate.

🔪 Weapons 🔫
"Ossifrage" Marksman Rifle
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Producer: Sonnenschmiede Waffenfabrik, Abteilung Alman (SW-AA)
Chamber: 8mm Spitzer
Action: Bolt-action
Type: Modified Service Rifle
Feed: 20-round detachable box magazine
Produced: 1932
An older "Locust" rifle custom-made for the Jaeger Corps. It has been modified to use detachable 20-round box magazines, and a special mounting has been made for the attachable scope. Its straight bolt handle has been bent at an angle to be closer to the trigger.
Such wartime alterations were widespread in the Jaegers, who tinkered with their weapons to suit their operational needs. This particular example was used by Dinadan as his personal sniper rifle. Its large magazine was particularly useful, as he would often eschew traditional webgear to save on weight; having your entire reserve crammed into a single magazine was a great boon.
"Raubwanze" Special Purpose Revolver
Tumblr media
Producer: Norig Cavernsmiths
Chamber: 8mm Copper
Action: Double-action
Type: Revolver
Feed: 7-round swing-out cylinder
Produced: 1893 - Present
Designed by the Kobold gunsmiths of Norig, the "Assassin Bug" features a unique gas-seal system in which the cylinder is pushed forward into the barrel. This - combined with the recessed 8mm cartridge - forms a seal, preventing fire from leaking through the cylinder gap.
This ability to be sealed paired incredibly well with the new "Silencers" - muzzle devices that reduced noise and eliminated excess elemental energy. These qualities proved handy in the cavern homes of the Norig kobolds, leading to their widespread use by Tunnel-Runners.
Eventually, other Specialist units began to privately purchase the pistol - after all, it was convenient against sentries. The swing-out cylinder design proved superior to the older gate-loading mechanisms; in spite of this, its full adoption was more of a suggestion among the older cavalrymen.
Entrenching Tool
Tumblr media
Producer: Sonnenschmiede Waffenfabrik, Abteilung Boiimia (SW-AB)
Type: Shovel
Material: Steel
Produced: 1915 - Present
The humble spade. Used for digging trenches and foxholes, it saw a new purpose during the Great War. Bayonets were too long, too clumsy in cramped conditions - swords and knives could blunt and dull, and took up more space.
Soldiers began to sharpen their shovels to better dig into the tough, compacted dirt. And it just so happened that they were equally as effective on the living.
Mass-produced from simple steel, these makeshift weapons were inferior to mithril or keravas. But they didn't need to be better; they just needed to work. And work they did, parting soil and soul alike.
Stielhandgranate M24
Tumblr media
Producer: Livadia Blastworks
Filling: Trinitrotoluene
Detonation Mechanism: Friction igniter, 4½ second delay
Type: Hand Grenade
Produced: 1924 - Present
An improvement over the earlier M15 stick grenade. The plains of Livadia are vast, flat and open. A typical hand grenade may not travel far enough to reach the enemy, and shrapnel fragments increased the risk of friendly fire incidents.
Designed with Livadi axe-throwing sports in mind, the Model 24 features a longer wooden handle and a lighter construction, allowing it to be thrown for much greater distances. Its thin-walled casing relies upon the stunning, concussive blast of the grenade, producing virtually no shrapnel and minimising the risk of friendly fire.
During defensive engagements, a fragmentation sleeve can be fitted over the warhead, allowing it to be used as a shrapnel bomb.
🛡️ Armour 🛡️
"Sappenpanzer" Trench Armour
Tumblr media
Producer: Ungrian Armoursmiths
Material: Alchemically-treated steel plates, canvas and felt lining
Type: Medium Armour
Produced: 1923 - Present
Standard-issue bullet resistant armour. The alchemically-treated steel is rated against rifle-caliber munitions, though it only covers the vital organs. Aerial units must undergo training to wear this armour in flight.
Jaeger Helmet & Brow Plate
Tumblr media
Producer: Ungrian Armoursmiths
Material: Alchemicaly-treated steel
Type: Helmet
Produced: 1923 - Present
The traditional spiked helmet of the Jaeger Corps. Its flared design is inspired by the older Sallet, optimised for protection against shrapnel. The added brow plate provides further protection against munitions.
M15 MBC Gas Mask
Tumblr media
Producer: Boiimian Hazard Institute
Filter: Activated Carbon
Type: Infantry Gas Mask
Produced: 1915 - Present
Mutagenic, Biological and Chemical hazards are a constant threat in the world of Elandria. The use of gas masks is simply another fact of life; without them, work simply cannot be done.
The M15 design is old and hardly as advanced as it used to be. Nevertheless, it still sees production due to its simplicity and ease of manufacture.

When a Character is Falling in Love but Doesn’t Trust It
Love is terrifying. Especially for characters who’ve been hurt, shut down, or raised to believe vulnerability is weakness. So when they start falling? It doesn’t look like a Disney montage. It looks like panic in slow motion.
✧ They start noticing everything and it unsettles them. The way their voice cracks when they laugh. The way their fingers tap when they’re thinking. These little details burrow in and refuse to leave. And that awareness makes the character feel exposed.
✧ They become hyperaware of their own body. Where their hands are. How close they’re standing. If they’re blushing. It’s like being inside a body that’s betraying them constantly.
✧ They act a little mean. Not because they are mean. But because being cold is safer than being real. Sarcasm, distance, teasing, they use it like armor.
✧ They hate how much they want to share things. They’ll see a funny meme and instinctively want to send it. Then stop. No. Don’t get attached. They want to tell them about a childhood memory, then bite it back. Too personal.
✧ They become inconsistent. Warm one moment, distant the next. Showing up, then pulling away. They’re testing how much of themselves they can reveal before it feels like too much.
✧ They assume the worst. They know it won’t last. That this person will leave. That they’re misreading everything. Love doesn’t feel safe, it feels like a countdown to pain.
✧ They self-sabotage. Pick fights. Flake on plans. Pull away emotionally just to “protect themselves” before it goes wrong. It’s tragic and messy and real.
✧ They notice silence more. What wasn’t said. A delayed reply. A joke that didn’t land. Everything becomes a sign that maybe this love thing was a mistake.
✧ They want to run, but never do. The desire to bolt is constant. But they don’t. Because something about this person is pulling them back, despite every warning bell going off in their head.
✧ They don’t trust the feeling, but they keep falling anyway. And that’s what makes it beautiful. And heartbreaking. Because they don’t want to fall. But they do. And maybe, just maybe, that’s the bravest thing they’ve ever done.

Rage, Grief & Other Quiet Explosions
(Emotional meltdowns that don’t look like meltdowns, but absolutely are)
The “Smiling Too Much” Grief Your character’s entire world is on fire, and they’re asking if anyone wants more wine. That’s not denial, it’s an effort to hold the damn pieces together. Smile like a glue gun. Watch them crack.
The “Not Crying At the Funeral” Breakdown They don't shed a tear. They organize everything. Perfect speech. Perfect outfit. But a week later, they scream into the laundry basket over a missing sock. That’s the moment. That’s the eulogy.
The “Silent Dinner Table” Fight No yelling. No slamming doors. Just chewing. Clinking silverware. The kind of silence that tastes like metal. Let the reader feel the air shrink.
The “Polite but Dead Inside” Apology They say “Sorry” because it’s expected, not because they’re ready. Their voice doesn’t crack. Their eyes don’t meet yours. This isn’t healing. This is a peace treaty with no peace.
The “I Don’t Want to Talk About It” Detour The one where they ask about your day mid-sob. Redirect. Deflect. “Let’s not talk about me.” That’s rage choked by shame. Write it like it’s shoving itself into a smaller box.
The “Obsessively Productive” Meltdown New projects. New hobbies. Suddenly they’re running marathons, baking sourdough, fixing the garage door. Because if they sit still for one second, they’ll break. Keep the camera on them when they finally sit.
The “Unsent Letters” Grief They write it all down. Every damn emotion. Then burn it. Or delete it. Or hide it in a shoebox under their bed. It’s not for closure. It’s to let the ghosts know they were seen.
The “I’m Fine” That Echoes Delivered too fast. Too sharp. You could bounce a quarter off it. “I’m fine” isn’t fine. It’s the dam cracking. Listen to the echo. Let another character hear the hollowness.
The “Hyper-Logical Rant” Rage They argue with spreadsheets. With perfect bullet points. Cold rage—like ice, not fire. “I’m not mad, I’m just saying…” But that’s a lie. They’re volcanic under that clipboard.
The “Laughing in the Middle of the Breakdown” Moment That bitter, hysterical laugh. The kind that sounds more like sobbing with teeth. Let it come at the worst time. Let it shock even them. That’s emotion refusing to stay boxed in.

This will be useful...
Emotional Walls Your Character Has Built (And What Might Finally Break Them)
(How your character defends their soft core and what could shatter it) Because protection becomes prison real fast.
✶ Sarcasm as armor. (Break it with someone who laughs gently, not mockingly.) ✶ Hyper-independence. (Break it with someone who shows up even when they’re told not to.) ✶ Stoicism. (Break it with a safe space to fall apart.) ✶ Flirting to avoid intimacy. (Break it with real vulnerability they didn’t see coming.) ✶ Ghosting everyone. (Break it with someone who won’t take silence as an answer.) ✶ Lying for convenience. (Break it with someone who sees through them but stays anyway.) ✶ Avoiding touch. (Break it with accidental, gentle contact that feels like home.) ✶ Oversharing meaningless things to hide real depth. (Break it with someone who asks the second question.) ✶ Overworking. (Break it with forced stillness and the terrifying sound of their own thoughts.) ✶ Pretending not to care. (Break it with a loss they can’t fake their way through.) ✶ Avoiding mirrors. (Break it with a quiet compliment that hits too hard.) ✶ Turning every conversation into a joke. (Break it with someone who doesn’t laugh.) ✶ Being everyone’s helper. (Break it when someone asks what they need, and waits for an answer.) ✶ Constantly saying “I’m fine.” (Break it when they finally scream that they’re not.) ✶ Running. Always running. (Break it with someone who doesn’t chase, but doesn’t leave, either.) ✶ Intellectualizing every feeling. (Break it with raw, messy emotion they can’t logic away.) ✶ Trying to be the strong one. (Break it when someone sees the weight they’re carrying, and offers to help.) ✶ Hiding behind success. (Break it when they succeed and still feel empty.) ✶ Avoiding conflict at all costs. (Break it when silence causes more pain than the truth.) ✶ Focusing on everyone else’s healing but their own. (Break it when they hit emotional burnout.)
