Surgeon Al-Zahrawi (936–1013 CE) from Cordoba in the Muslim kingdom of al-Andalus, was one of the most famous physicians of the middle ages. He invented many medical instruments, and wrote the first surgical textbook which included illustrations like the one above. It was not just a textbook, however. The Kitab al-Tasrif is a 30-chapter treatise on multiple areas of medicine, including surgery, dentistry, and childbirth.

what if it was your country? / ya senin ülken olsaydı?
15-16.07.2016 night... it was not any other night, weird like a dream, horrible like a nightmare. i still feel strange now, after one week... although i lived a very little part of it. there are people lived much more. and there are people died that night. some 250 people or more...
it was a military coup attempt. thanks god, really truly thanks god, it ended ‘just’ an attempt.
bridges, airports, tv channels invaded, parliament was bombed, the president would be captured or killed, and people died. they died because they did not want to give up their elected government. they are killed by our own soldiers. our own army and air forces... in fact one group from the military, not all of them, thanks god... they used our country’s aircrafts and tanks and guns and killed our country’s fellow people.
people are killed, because they were on the streets, protesting the coup attempt. they were on the streets because they wanted to protect their free will.
me and my wife were also at the streets on that night. usually i carry a pocket knife, but i left it at home that night. we were watching news on the tv and struggling to understand what’s going on. then the official tv channel trt which was invaded by the coup soldiers started to air a coup declaration. they said ‘it is forbidden to be in the streets until a second command’. and we didn’t think a second to leave the home, and to be on the streets. we refused their command and walked through the streets. i thought it had to be a civil action, and i left even my tiny knife at home. we walked to the bogazici bridge which had been blocked by those traitors. the bridge was crowded and my and my wife were far away from the zero point. we heard gunfire. we did not have any weapon but our voices. they fired and we yelled at them boo.
thanks to my people, thanks to our patriotic security forces, thanks god, the coup attempt had ended quickly. we are on the streets every night from then, to protest the coup attempt and to support our elected government.
i read some articles on the western newspapers on the net. they say ‘that’s a pity, the military rule would be better for turkish democracy.’ nonsense. how can you dare to say such thing? shame on you.
what if it was your country?
now imagine it...
