Took the rwby survey and thought my response to one of the questions was actually a pretty good analysis, here

The visual aesthetics of RWBY have changed drastically throughout the different acts (ie, volumes 1-3 being mildly sci-fi, volumes 4-6 being very fantasy, and volumes 7-8 being much more on the higher tech side.) This also reflects in the designs, and even styles of the show. The music for RWBY has always been incredible and I would not change a thing, Casey and her band OK Goodnight being the lead directors of the soundtrack similar to volume 9 would be ideal, but the story has changed in quality, and affects all of the other aspects of the show. What keeps RWBY's story fresh, is the action. In recent volumes (5-8) fights have because rarer, and far more stale. It seems as though the team has completely forgotten the characters' abilities. For example, in volume 8, the main 4 +penny must face a variety of grim that would have been a small, but easy challenge to their volume 1 selves. In volume 8 however, they struggle and odd amount for grim that they have absolutely faced before, and it puts the story in a very odd place. Do NOT confuse this with Ruby's inability to fight in volume 9, as that was incredible writing and a good showcase of the PTSD she had been repressing. However, when a character is giving it their all in a non-wrecked mental state and its far more disappointing than when said character was 16, it's jarring in a very bad way. The fight scenes must be consistent and EXCITING, the main pull of the show on release were the trailers and the fights belonging to them. Its important to see what the characters can do, and how they can push themselves. Have Ruby utilize her speed again in a meaningful and creative way (just look at the food fight from volume 2) or have Weiss go back to her ballerina dancing roots and stop using her sword as just a magic wand. Let Blake do like... anything with her semblance and let Yang use her environment more now that shes obviously smarter and wiser after her character arc in volume 4. The fights (and DONT FORGET THE WEAPONS!!!) are the most vital part of RWBY, and they control every other aspect of what makes the show great.
