So, I just noticed something VERY messed up when I was watching The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993).

!!SPOILERS AND CHILD ABUSE TW!!

So about an hour or so into the movie, Jack sends Lock Shock and Barrel (keep in mind that they're no older than 7 years old) to kidnap Santa; specifically, he sends them into a heavily wooded area unsupervised to reach the holiday world doors before entering Christmas Town, which Jack has been to only once.

This is remarkably dangerous for anyone to do, let alone children; like I said before, Jack himself has only been to Christmas Town one SINGULAR TIME. Christmas Town is an entirely different town with a different culture, ecosystem, etc., that LSB might not be accustomed to. They could've gotten lost, hurt, or even abducted if someone was in the woods with them; as much as I hate to say this, weirdos are everywhere. And what's worse is that they actually did get lost and go through the wrong door, but at least they came back. There could've been a scenario where the three didn't come back at all. This is a major lack of judgement on Jack’s part;  it’s stupid at best and purposely neglectful at worst (don’t worry, we'll get to the neglect soon enough). Now I understand that they may understand the concept of stranger danger, but given their young age and occupations as trick-or-treaters, I doubt that.

When they accidentally bring the Easter bunny to Jack, Jack gets unreasonably angry at these literal children because they made a mistake. Also, I couldn’t help but notice that when Jack leaned towards the trio while he was basically throwing a fit over what could’ve been an honest mistake, they flinch away from him after saying "we followed your instructions" and "we went through the door." After Jack corrects them, Shock starts choking Lock, to which Barrel, who is five years old, tries to hit them. Jack doesn’t react with concern or even try to break up the fight, rather he stands there acting like they drew on the walls with crayons, like this is behaviour that they exhibit regularly; he then breaks up the fight by screaming/howling at them (you don’t need me to say why that's wrong so I’ll leave it at that.) I understand that some kids show violent behaviours and grow out of it, but young children should not be strangling their peers.

According to Stanford, signs of abuse and/or neglect in children include fearing a parental figure, increased verbal abuse or physically aggressive behavior with others, and social withdrawal—all of which are seen in Lock Shock and Barrel. Until the end of the movie, when LSB are free from Oogie’s control, they are never seen actively participating in town activities like when the town summons Jack or when Jack is telling the town about Christmas. They might've been doing other things outside of that, but they never participate in anything unless it can directly benefit Oogie.

Shock exhibits aggressive verbal and physical behaviours frequently, calling her fellow trick-or-treaters 'dumb,' telling Lock to shut up and yelling "Listen now!" in the Kidnap The Sandy Claws song number, during which she hits Barrel in the side of his face with a box; also, during the opening of 'Kidnap The Sandy Claws,' she hits Barrel in the face with her mask after he recommends 'drawing straws.' There's also the line which she (and later Lock) sing "You’re so stupid, think now! If we blow him up to smithereens, we may lose some pieces and then Jack will beat us black and green!"

Not only does this show verbally aggressive behaviour, but it also implies that Jack is physically abusive. Jack is not shown to be abusive in any way outside of being neglectful, but it might imply that Jack has threatened physical abuse before to these children.

Oogie Boogie, on the other hand, may very well be —no, is definitely—abusive in some way. In the aforementioned Kidnap The Sandy Claws number, Lock and Shock sing the line "Mr Oogie Boogie is the meanest guy around; if I were on his Boogie list, I'd get out of town!" and all three sing "We're his little henchman and we take our job with pride; we do our best to please him, and stay on his good side." The second line sounds like they're trying to convince themselves that Oogie is not abusive and that they enjoy being his 'henchman.' (although they could've just been hyping themselves up for the mission, but who knows) I noticed that Shock, specifically, sounds scared—or at the very least on edge—while singing these lines.

Lock Shock and Barrel live in a dilapidated treehouse in horrible living conditions: live cockroaches crawling on the floor, torn walls and furniture, only one toy that I could notice, access to multiple dangerous things including fireworks, actively boiling cauldrons, bear traps, and an unsafe bridge and elevator system over a dangerously tall height.

What’s even worse is that it's not like Jack Skellington was unaware of Oogie Boogie's existence and Lock Shock and Barrel's subsequent abuse; he knew who Oogie Boogie was—a sadistic gambling womaniser, knew that LSB were under his "guidance" and his control, and knew that they would bring Santa back to Oogie because that is what they think he wants them to do, but chose to do nothing. Jack was not only wilfully ignorant of the possible abuse, but was complicit in said abuse. Jack failed them.

TL;DR: Jack Skellington was complicit in child abuse and there is evidence to back it up.
