I love how Disney has managed to shoot itself in the fucking foot by exclaiming in 2017 how they were going to introduce The First Openly Gay Disney Character™ and then all we got was:
A meaningless three second shot that you miss if you blinked. And as outraged as people (rightfully) were about this being the first “openly” gay character, while watching Frozen II I suddenly realized the fucking possibilities.
Because if that shot in Beauty in the Beast is supposed to be openly gay… Honeymaren and Elsa are basically married by “Gay Disney Standards”:
They had a sweet conversation about childhood (while Elsa barely opens up to anyone, never mind new people) and sung together
Honeymaren invited Elsa to stay because she belongs here
They hold hands after the events and Elsa decided to stay with the Northuldra - and thus with Honeymaren.
They wave at each other as they’re both riding into the credits
(Not to mention the overall themes of Elsa’s arc of not belonging in the society she grew up in, following a woman’s voice just after half a day of hearing it and deciding to leave said society for a Different Path).
Yes this is pathetic representation and Elsa and Honeymaren interacted for like 2 minutes, but also? Two minutes is 120 seconds, which is 40 times more screen time than fucking LeFou had with his “love interest”.
And no - Disney does not get a single fucking credit for this because it will always be in a mediocre, woke but not too woke, conservative but not too conservative, middle of the road kind of tango with itself because it wants to please everyone.
But that doesn’t stop me from shouting “GAY” at the screen every time a woman gives as much as a simple glance at another woman, because that’s the standard Disney has set for itself. It set its bar so low, so drenched into subtext, that every subtext is now canon.
“Here’s what’s eating me… you heard Roger in that win-loss meeting, talking about my terrorism win? "A total team effort,” probably what he’d say if I won Wimbledon. Now he gives me a routine prosecution …a gun-possession case.“
"There are no routine prosecutions, and I wouldn’t compare terrorism prosecutions to tennis tournaments.”
This video is reason number 462 to watch For the People. I knew Kate was queer since her first meeting with Sandra. Anyways, here’s this beautiful scene between the blonde and the brunette.
