For a couple years now I've been getting the artistic equivalent of :
"I want to break my phone and live in the woods"
I just opened Instagram for the first time in a year and got overwhelmed at all the amazing artists I follow to the point my brain just shut off

This is one of the pieces that makes me grateful for how little attention my art gets ^^' I'm very proud of the water.

"why can't they just be friends" not in the homophobic way but in the "their platonic relationship in the source material is far more dynamic and complex than the sanitized personalities they gain as a result of shipping" way

I agree, and the wording up there in the og post is very "twitter snappy" in a way I'm regretting now.
In my experience, I don't want to care and I'd like to make my own fun, but when I see this type of art I dont just see the art in a vacuum
I see so many complex sociopolitical workings and norms that informed the art, what these patterns of depictions imply about views on men and women and their dynamics while casually excluding anyone with a more nuanced experience (usually trans, nonbinary people, but for an even more straightforward example: a straight woman who isnt short or into being treated like a child,)
it's not the art in itself that's harmful, it's the pattern and it's implications.
The ladies are always short, curvy but not fat, pretty and feminine.
The men are always smug, tall and broad, and uncomfortably condescending.
I'll start caring about M / F pairings more if the works and fanworks stop looking like this:
