I agree, I think the time lapse helped with the motion you were trying to depict. I think the music represented the video well.

Project #4: One-Minute Performance Piece
Artist Statement: For this project I wanted to show the movement which is a part of painting. One thing that struck me about performance art is that there is somewhat of a permanence in its instantaneous nature. There isn’t really room to go back and alter what has already occurred as you can in other art forms, so I could definitely feel the pressure in that respect. My Original plan was to paint in time with the music, but the video didn’t really work out that way. Yet i still think that it displays a message of fluidity, expression, and impermanence, which have been discussed throughout this course.Overall I am satisfied with the result.

I love the feeling of traveling by watching this song - and the song itself - as well as how you matched up the beat and rhythm of the song to the movements of the video.

i think this has a great message, I just wish that it was zoomed in closer. Great way to emulate Marina!
Project #4
My art performance has a powerful meaning to me. I decided to stay still while I’m getting my dress cut. The meaning is that society tells us what is in “style” what looks good on you depending on your skin color, body type, and cultures. We should always do and dress how we want! who said dresses were for girls? Whether you are extra small, small, medium, large, extra large or extra extra extra extra large you are beautiful. Love your body!

I think was a great representation of depression, I do wish that you had played with the colors more, perhaps in shades - make it monochromatic to make the message that much clearer.

Project 4: Performance Art
I was having a really hard time coming up with an idea for performance art, in no small part thanks to the depressive funk I’ve been in lately. So after racking my brain and coming up short, I decided to just show what depression looks like. Moving seems like a gargantuan task, colors and sounds seem muted, and all you want to do is just lay in bed.

Project #4
This was my idea of performance art; I wanted to show the idea that everyone says that they’re okay when they’re slowly being corrupted with sadness or anger from the inside-out and how it spreads from the heart to the brain. I thought of this for my performance piece because of the reading we did, saying that performance art is not just one category and encompasses all forms.
Also, say hello to my cat, Macy.

Marina Abromovic
I have actually watched this movie before, I chose her as an artist to study in my 2D class a couple of semesters ago. She’s an amazing example of a performance artist because of her dedication to her work; she’s willing to do more than what she needs to in order to make the largest impact possible with her performance. I like that the audience is just as important as she is to the performance.

Module 4 Reading
I loved the idea that performance art is both ephemeral and limitless in the art world. For my project, I have several ideas already, but the one I am thinking of going with mixes multiple aspects of art, so the idea that there is no category for performance art really hit me. Also, with it being ephemeral, performance art represents a lot of aspects of life, because it isn’t meant to last but it can impact people regardless.

Project #3
This is my idea of vanishing and becoming. To me, the reading represented the circle of life and how everyone’s experience is unique. I decided to use a video of a rose blooming and then decaying with the song The River Cam to represent the beauty, sadness, and wonder of life. My focus was on the music representing the video. This rose becomes a beautiful flower, wilts away as everyone does, and will return to the earth to become again.

I really liked how open and honest you were, but I think it would have been more successful with someone to help video, which isn’t exactly in your control. Good job!

Project 4: Performance Art Artist’s Statement is in the video, but here’s an abridged version: I wanted to bring light to something in our culture that’s not talked about, yet so incredibly common: online dating. Tinder IRL. There’s nothing to be ashamed of, so why do we hide it? So, I decided to hit the streets with my dating profile visible! In the video, I explain that I didn’t have someone to help me, so I made it vlog style to show as much of the process as I could.

Super Long and Tedious Reading for Module 3
Art theory goes completely over my head and this reading was fairly difficult to comprehend at the best of times; however, when I did understand what I was reading, it produced a lot of wonder and curiosity. There were several things this reading sparked, and I’ll focus on those! I like the idea that was introduced when questioning the purpose of the art, the idea that artists are trying to immortalize something that originally would abandon them. I think many artists are trying to impact the world for just a moment, but that it is also something that will remain remembered for a long time. Its artists’ way of influencing the world for a moment in time or for the course of humanity; most everyone desires to do something meaningful with their life. I also enjoy the idea of “resembling reality,” because art can be that way; making art as realistic as possible or something that represents another thing found in life. I think that’s an interesting concept because of the implications behind it. Artists can attempt to recreate their own form of reality and allow people to see what they do, which is a rare opportunity. Few people get to create and share. It was also interesting to see how the author described light; I never thought much of the reflections or shadows of objects and how much they shape our reality. Light shines in through my windows and I can watch the day go by through the light that is cast on my walls, watch it rise and then fall into darkness. I see this on a daily basis and it escapes my notice for the most part. But it is beautiful and ever changing and can be captured in its own ways. The amount of light can set a scene; darkness can cast the mood of an ominous setting or danger lurking, bright and sunny noon can show the height of living, an evening glimmer on the water can set a romantic lighting… There are possibilities within something that seems so ordinary and repetitive.

Reading Response to Chapter 6 for Module 3
Before reading this chapter, I didn’t consider motion and time as much as I should have. I view myself as mainly a two-dimensional artist - even though time and motion can be applied to 2D art - so I never valued the ideas of motion and time in my projects. I see how these two can be extremely valuable in this class. With the gifs, we had to consider how the duration of the clip and the repetitive would affect the viewer. I was only conscientiously thinking of those aspects because that was required for the assignment. I will now be able to really focus on the many different aspects of time and motion on my final two projects for this class :)

Exercise #3
I decided to combine the song Happy and the movie 50 First Dates. First time ever doing anything remotely like this, fairly happy with the results :)

I think you did a great job showing the entire process. For some reason, one of the gifs didn’t work for me.

For my gif project, I wanted to do something that I thought would make a cool series. For that, I turned to one of my favorite mediums: linocuts. I tried to show the whole process in a visually interesting way, from start to finish, and I’m pretty happy with the results.
