Chester Zoo Chimpanzees Enjoy Tool Time #ApesAndTools by SloggerVlogger *Chester Zoo chimpanzees use sticks as tools to retrieve treats from logs and walls. * The staff at Chester Zoo threw a bunch of sticks onto the Chimpanzee Island for the chimpanzees to use as tools. There are several places with holes in the walls, both inside and outside, and holes in logs where they use sticks to retrieve treats. Alice and her daughter Annie both grabbed a stick to go inside. Alice's swelling is at an all-time high. When you look at the previous videos, it was quite big then, and people thought it wasn't normal. For her, it seems normal and never seems to bother her, and the males love her for it. That’s Chimpanzee behaviour for you—resilient and adaptive. Eric has his stick as well. Zee Zee is using hers in the logs with her little boy Jeff by her side, demonstrating a valuable interaction between mother and child. Stevie, her daughter, joins in. She sticks the stick in the log and waits. It has been a long-standing tradition at the zoo to name baby chimpanzees after famous rock and pop stars, helping to raise much-needed awareness for this charismatic species. Intense! Gorilla Kajari Throws Monkey by the Tail – Tonda’s Gentle Side by SloggerVlogger *Kajari throws Litchee by her tail, causing chaos, while silverback Awali provides safety. Tonda's gentler nature contrasts Kajari's aggression, showing a softer side of gorilla behaviour.* This week, a look at Awali the silverback, and Kajari and Tonda, before we see more of Lope next week. The two blackbacks are still making the silverbacks' lives difficult, and they love throwing wood chips at him. I heard the crash bangs from the opposite side where I was filming a resting Lope. I saw Mangabey Monkey mother Mandarin on the far end, and then all of a sudden, Awali hit the window with Litchee close on his heels, one of the blackbacks following and getting up to his old tricks—throwing wood shavings at the big silverback. Things kicked off even more when Kajari pulled on Litchee's tail, making her scream. Mandarin, Litchee’s mum, jumped at Kajari from afar to the rescue. Kajari quickly grabbed the hose with one hand, but he still held onto Litchee’s tail, making the poor Litchee fly through the air. He finally let go mid-throw, and luckily, she is so agile that she managed to grab the hose with her feet and tail, softening her landing. This is the reason why Litchee doesn't like Kajari very much. Kajari's half-brother Tonda is much gentler with Litchee. A charging Awali didn't seem happy either, as he's quite fond of Litchee. Litchee was fine, staying close to the big guy. I didn't know there was another monkey species in with Awali's troop, the Moustached Guenon, but apart from once spotting a tail, they didn’t make an appearance on my entire trip. The brothers left Litchee in peace and started squabbling between themselves. In the end, you’ll see how much more gentle Tonda is with Litchee than his half-brother Kajari. Silverback Oumbi’s Reaction to Shufai and Biddy by SloggerVlogger At his age, Shufai would normally be focused on females—if not for his castration. Some might not want me mentioning this, but the detail has been publicly available online for years, and sadly, the fact is what it is—it can’t be changed. In gorillas, early castration lowers testosterone, affecting behaviours like dominance, aggression, and mating. Still, it doesn’t completely erase attraction—some neutered males may still show mild courtship or social interest. Biddy slaps her bum—something I’ve seen before as a possible sign she’s receptive, though considering her age, it’s probably unlikely. Oumbi briefly reaches out, but it’s his mother, Ozala, who clearly isn’t happy. Oumbi stays calm, probably aware of Shufai’s situation. That’s likely why Shufai could remain with the group—unlike Lope, Oumbi’s older son, who was pushed out as he matured. Shufai tries again, but Ozala isn’t having it. Oumbi moves, then settles back at the rear. After lunch, it calms down. Shufai is playing with the wood wool. Then, he tries to get under the log, but his belly is a little too big—or is it? Meet Wilhelma Zoo’s Gorillas - Silverback Tools and Antics Cause Tumble by SloggerVlogger *Meet the Gorilla troop from the Wilhelma Zoological-Botanical Garden in Stuttgart.* Silverback Kibo shows clever tool use, using a stick to pull a tree branch within reach to enjoy its leaves. Mimi looks graceful as she sits on a log. The group enjoys their food, but Undi isn’t impressed with Masani’s antics. Masani takes things too far, causing poor old Mimi to tumble. A closer look introduces you to the other fascinating members of this troop. There is a little more to come over the coming weeks, including a premiere ( a longer length videos where you can join the live chat. ) Silverback Kibo was born at the Kölner Zoo on the 24th October 1990 and got moved to Zoologisch-botanischer Garten Wilhelma on the 17th September 2001. His offsprings are Lengai, Meru, Shira, Mawenzi, Kimbali, Milele, Tonda, Masani, Pelu. Female Gorilla Mimi was born in October 1963 in Cameroon. She was at an unknown location until 14th October 1965. This is also when she was moved to the Zoologisch-botanischer Garten Wilhelma. Her offsprings are Mamitu, Golo ( who is the Silverback at Budapest Zoo who I featured on this channel previously), Momo, Yangu, Makokou, Mutasi, Meru. Mora, Bill, Mojoko, Maayabu sadly passed away. Gorilla female Undi is wild born in Africa 1972. She was at an unknown location and then got moved on the 28th of March 1973 to Wilhelma. The only surviving offspring is called Jitu. Her other babies are called Hobbit, Ulca, Efata, Utunda, Amani. Gorilla female Kolo was born on the October 16th 1986 at Apenheul Primate Park. She was moved to Wilhelma on the 31st of October 1995.
