A Massage for a Special Gorilla by SloggerVlogger Gorilla Lope is having the time of his life in the new gorilla massage parlour! Lope’s getting the full treatment today – knuckle massage included. One cheeky bite and Lope quickly rethinks the front massage idea. Aybo carries on, but starts yawning. Masseur needs a break. Lope turns – a bit ticklish there. He rolls on his back and Aybo starts a deep tissue massage on his chest and belly. Lope turns back around, and Aybo scratches his back some more. Then the wrestling breaks out. After a minute, he’s had enough and walks off. But it doesn't take long for the two to start again. Lope keeps walking behind the rock, but shortly after, they're back at it. Then Lope takes the hose in his mouth and starts opening and closing it. Still got his silly streak. Aybo watches closely – very closely – then rips the hose out of Lope’s mouth and does the same. Lope takes the hose back again. He ends up on his back until Dishi comes over. Lope moves, charges across to the other side, then swings up to the platform. Watch as Aybo runs toward Lope, unexpected sounds emerge, and a surprise dash* It's great to finally see Lope spending more time outside. Aybo runs towards Lope, and in return, Lope charges past him with energy. After a quick glance at me, Lope sits down, while Aybo stops. The original sound includes a light aircraft ( there is an airport for light aircrafts very close-by) and sometimes even a dog bark is heard – no, the dog isn't in the zoo😊! The back fence, this is an area not accessible to visitors, and the dog sounds come from there. Suddenly, Dishi rushes out, and as soon as he's outside, Lope heads back inside. Aybo and Dishi were out longer, and once Dishi went back in, Lope came back outside. You'll notice the size difference between Aybo and Lope when Aybo sits behind Lope. Gorilla Strength Test Tonda vs Kajari in a Window Battle by SloggerVlogger The window clash. Blackbacks Tonda and Kajari from Awali's troop are always up for a battle, testing each other's strength. Later in the day, Awali has had enough and charges after the blackbacks throw dusty ground cover at him multiple times. Watching this footage, compared to a year ago, it's clear they've grown a lot. Asante’s Birthday – Enrichment or Routine? You Decide by SloggerVlogger Filmed on Asante’s 40th birthday! They got some browse, red cabbage, cabbage leaves, and a few carrots. They do love the carrots — definitely a great addition to some of their feeding days now. Oumbi growls at Shufai, his son. Asante spends most of her mornings up in the top bunk having her breakfast browse. Shufai is having fun with the bucket. The silverback has another go at his son, then bites the hose in frustration with a one-arm half-hearted chest beat. Now we know where Lope gets it from😄. Ozala is getting some carrot pieces from the keeper outside. The others have to be quick to get some too. Ozala chases her son off. Anything for additional carrot pieces. Oumbi got a piece too. On the other side they are some snack balls with carrots in them, Ozala got them all. Asante did go out later to get her Chinese cabbage quickly and went straight back inside. I was on the other side and missed that bit. Sadly, nowadays you only see her quickly popping out to get food, then going back inside straight away. Not sure if it’s because of the new climbing frame. If she would give the new frame a try, I bet she would love it. She could go all the way up to the top — an easy way of staying far away from Oumbi, which she likes. In the afternoon, Asante sits by the window when Biddy approaches. Asante moves as Biddy comes closer. Biddy says a quick hello. As Asante turned 40 in this video — a significant milestone — it got me thinking about birthdays at Twycross years ago, when the gorillas were given all sorts: ice treats, veggie cakes, hessian sacks, blankets… So the question is: A thoughtful day for Asante? You decide. I’ve been told many times, “They don’t know it’s their birthday.” And yes, they don’t mark the date like we do. But here’s what I believe: Gorillas thrive on novelty. When they’re given a variety of foods, new textures, unfamiliar smells, or toys, they show clear interest and excitement. That’s stimulation. That’s enrichment. It’s one of the few ways we can give them a sense of change — and it’s something they absolutely deserve. Someone said to me on the day, rather sarcastically, “What, you want us to bake a chocolate cake for her?” No, of course not. But I do believe a bit more thought would’ve made a difference. A birthday can simply be a good excuse to offer enrichment — something they don’t get every day. Whether we call it a birthday or not isn’t the point — and this has nothing to do with anthropomorphism. I’m not suggesting they know it’s their birthday or expect a card. What I’m saying is this: it’s a chance to give them a day that feels different. A day that’s special in their world, not ours. And anyone who’s observed gorillas closely knows they do recognise when things are different. You can see it in their curiosity and energy. It breaks the routine. So I’d really like to ask — what do you think? Am I being too sentimental? Or do you feel the same — that even if they don’t understand the concept of a birthday, they still deserve a day to be excited, enriched, and spoiled with the things they love? When Jim and Joe Gang Up on Jazz & Sprout by SloggerVlogger *Jim and Joe annoy Jazz until his patience runs out. * Jim begins by hanging upside down, swinging into Jazz and biting her shoulder. When he stops, Joe takes over, harassing Jazz until she walks off. Jim watches Sprout squeeze a spot, then Joe tracks Jazz again and resumes his antics. Jazz escapes. Jim’s back at it shortly after—still the most persistent little troublemaker. Later, Sprout is lying on the hammock while Joe climbs from below, twisting and pulling her hair. She stays surprisingly calm—until Jim joins in. Snack Attack! Jambo’s Jump Down for Biscuits by SloggerVlogger Did you know it was his birthday yesterday 09th June 2025? He is 43 years old now. I had to blend the original audio with some ambient sound — there were quite a few loud voices nearby. Jambo makes his way across the new wooden frame. He pauses, looks up, flashes his teeth… and then jumps down from the recently installed platform. At the bottom, he joins Flynn and Josie.
