My mother bought me my first "real" camera, replacing the family Instamatic I abducted. It was an impulse gift as we strolled down Boylston in Boston on my twentieth birthday. My mother loved when I took pictures of her garden, then full and lush, glorious in bloom. There are boxes and envelopes full of prints, some of them good, some of them sh*t, but she kept every one. Though we were at odds at times, my mother's gifts were bountiful. Her garden may be long gone but still I find myself photographing flowers. Still I find myself thinking of her.
